Serena Cherry had never played Fortnite—until she walked through its world at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights. In a first-person account published October 5, 2026, the GamesRadar+ writer says the Fortnitemares scare zone made her curious enough to download the game. Four weeks later, she said she had played dozens of hours. It is one visitor’s story, not evidence that Halloween Horror Nights routinely turns skeptics into players.
A first visit to Fortnite, outside the game
Cherry’s account begins with a simple admission: “Up until very recently, I had never played Fortnite.” Rather than encountering the game through a console or a friend’s recommendation, she encountered a physical interpretation of it at Halloween Horror Nights (HHN). The costumed characters and Fortnite props caught her attention; the experience left her curious enough to try the game at home.

Her description of the change is enthusiastic but personal: “I dropped into the world of Fortnite as a total newbie, but after experiencing it in real life at Halloween Horror Nights, I am now utterly captivated with the game.” That is Cherry’s account of her own reaction, not an independently verified play history or a claim about how other visitors respond. What the 2026 Fortnitemares scare zone was like
The U.S. parks’ 2026 Fortnitemares attraction was an in-person HHN scare zone, not a separate Fortnite game mode visitors played at the parks. GamesRadar+ names Universal Orlando Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood as locations, with the event scheduled through November 1, 2026. Universal Orlando’s version was staged in Central Park at Universal Studios Florida.

- The Fortnite – Darkfire & Ice Bundle includes 10+ cosmetics and 1,000 V-Bucks!
Universal Orlando’s behind-the-scenes account describes a walk through Freaky Fields and a Battle Royale scene, with performers firing at one another above the path. Guests encounter Shadows and Husks, then a storm sequence that builds the scare before the zone reaches an HHN/Fortnitemares party point of interest. There, the FORTNITEMARES Battle Bus and Skeletara bring the Fortnite imagery into the park setting.
Show director Ramon Paradoa highlighted the storm as both a scare and a technical feature: “If you’re caught in the pathway when the storm rolls in, the scares intensify and there’s a really cool show moment.” He also described the zone’s lighting, audio, effects and show control as among HHN’s most advanced. These details are from Universal Orlando’s account of its Orlando production; they should not be assumed to describe every element at the Hollywood park. From the scare zone to the game
For Cherry, the bridge between the park and Fortnite was curiosity: she had seen characters and props in a real-world setting, then wanted to understand the game they came from. In her article, she says that after downloading it, she played dozens of hours over the following four weeks. She also said she was saving V-Bucks for the Jack the Clown and Hamikuma collaboration skins. Those are details from her first-person account; they do not establish current shop availability or price.

Don’t confuse the U.S. scare zone with Japan’s Fortnite island
Universal Studios Japan also had an HHN-and-Fortnite experience, but it was a different project in a different year. Its 2025 UNIVERSAL STUDIOS JAPAN HALLOWEEN HORROR NIGHTS HUNT was a Fortnite Creative prop-hunt-style island set in a nighttime version of the park. The island was available August 22 through November 3, 2025, under code 0386-7746-7935.
Universal Studios Japan explicitly said that island was independently created and was not sponsored, supported or managed by Epic Games. It was a digital park-inspired experience, unlike the 2026 U.S. parks’ physical Fortnitemares scare zone.

Can Halloween Horror Nights get you into Fortnite?
Cherry’s story shows one route in: an immersive encounter made an unfamiliar game feel vivid enough to try. It does not establish that the scare zone will have the same effect on other guests, and the physical attraction and the game remain different experiences. For her, though, the characters, props and spectacle provided the nudge that a screen alone had not.
