A 2018 study showed that a three-bladed, propeller-shaped molecule shifts the balance between its right- and left-handed forms when placed in chiral organic solvents. The result suggests a possible molecular sensing principle; it is not a commercially available sensor.
What the molecule detects
The molecule has three conjugated blades arranged around a central benzene plane, giving it a propeller-like, three-dimensional structure. It can adopt either a right-handed (P) or left-handed (M) helical shape. Those forms interconvert, so the molecule is dynamically chiral rather than locked into one handed form.
In a chiral solvent, the P and M forms are not equally favored. The researchers attribute the shift to differential solvation: one conformer is better stabilized by the surrounding solvent molecules, changing the relative populations of the two forms. The solvent biases a conformational equilibrium; ordinary dissolution does not permanently make the molecule chiral.

As researcher Takanori Fukushima cautioned, “Solvation, which is a dynamic process, cannot induce chirality of organic molecules upon dissolution even though the solvent molecules are chiral.”

- FOR BASIC TEACHING TO ADVANCED SCIENCE: 444 pieces molecular model kit, including 136 atoms, 158 bonds and 150 parts for Carbon-60(Fullerene), provides to students from Grade 7 to Graduate level.
- TWO CHEMICAL STRUCTURE MODELS: The ball-and-stick models use spheres to represent atoms and sticks to represent chemical bonds. In the space-filling model, the spheres are drawn to scale and are next to one another as atoms are in real molecules.
- CHEMISTRY EDUCATIONAL MOLECULE MODEL IN 3D: It can display chemical structure, molecular bond, and bond angle in all directions. Demonstrate fundamental molecular geometry, chemical molecular structure, stereochemistry with 3D modeling studies.
- EASY TO LEARN: The universal standard adopted for each atom's color makes it easier for you to use and learn. Atoms and chemical bonds combine tightly and firmly and can be easily disassembled by disconnecting tools.

How the three-bladed structure was made
The team synthesized the sterically crowded structure through a three-fold benzannulation of 1,3,5-tris(phenylethynyl)benzene, mediated by 9-borafluorene. The reaction forms the propeller’s three arms in one step. The researchers presented the synthetic route as a way to access a deliberately three-dimensional, pi-conjugated structure.
Masayuki Takeuchi, an expert in molecular recognition and molecular sensors at Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science, described the protocol as “very powerful” because it gives supramolecular chemists access to such a structure.

What the result could—and could not—mean for sensing
The proposed idea is to use the molecule’s response to solvent chirality as the basis for an environmentally responsive chiral sensor. The 2018 report establishes a laboratory research finding and a potential sensing principle, not a finished device, validated field test, or commercial product. The available reports do not establish a quantitative performance figure that would allow readers to compare sensitivity or practical detection limits.
Fukushima also suggested that a suitably designed propeller blade might serve as a ligand for metal ions, potentially supporting environmentally responsive catalytic systems. That is a proposed direction, not an established application.

How the 2025 propeller research differs
A later study reported by Ehime University in 2025 explored a distinct propeller molecule built from six perylene diimide (PDI) chromophores. That system showed solvent-dependent chirality inversion and circularly polarized luminescence, including a signal inversion between chloroform and dichloromethane.
| Study | Molecular system | Reported solvent response |
|---|---|---|
| 2018 study | Three helically arranged pi-conjugated blades around a central benzene plane | Chiral solvents bias the relative populations of the P and M conformers |
| 2025 study | Six perylene diimide chromophores in a separate propeller molecule | Solvent-dependent chirality inversion and circularly polarized luminescence, including inversion between chloroform and dichloromethane |
The 2025 result shows that solvent-responsive propeller chirality remains an active research direction, but it is not a follow-up measurement on the same three-bladed molecule.
