A star-shaped polymer could carry a treatment through a plant’s vascular system and release it in the phloem, where slightly basic conditions are intended to trigger the carrier. The idea was reported in 2015 as laboratory-stage research—not as a marketed crop treatment or a proven replacement for conventional application.
How the plant-delivery concept works
The University of Florida team described a biodegradable, star-shaped copolymer made from poly(succinimide) (PSI) and poly(aspartic acid). Its proposed delivery mechanism depends on pH: PSI is hydrophobic at low pH, then becomes hydrophilic as it hydrolyses under higher-pH conditions. The design aims to use the slightly basic environment associated with plant phloem to prompt release of a carried payload.
Phloem is the plant’s vascular tissue for transporting substances. The researchers’ goal was to get a payload into this transport system and release it there. Brent Sumerlin, identified in the report as a University of Florida researcher, described the aim as developing polymer nanoparticles that respond to the slightly basic conditions in the phloem. Why make the carrier star-shaped?
The star architecture was presented as a way to move through plant vasculature with lower viscosity than comparable linear polymers. The shape is a design rationale, not evidence that the carrier has been shown to outperform linear polymers in field conditions. Architecture, molecular-weight tunability, pH response, payload, and stage of testing are research dimensions—not features of competing commercial products established by the available reporting.

What was reported in testing
The 2015 report says the team successfully delivered a synthetic plant hormone and that toxicity screening indicated the polymers were safe to use in citrus plants. These results are limited to the reported experiments: they do not establish safety across crops, effectiveness against citrus greening, field performance, regulatory approval, or routine agricultural use.
The work was motivated in part by citrus greening. The same report cited a Florida citrus industry value of more than $9 billion annually; that is a historical estimate published in 2015, not a current valuation.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The research paper is Mingsheng Chen, Shaun P. Jensen, Megan R. Hill, Gloria Moore, Zhenli He, and Brent S. Sumerlin, “Synthesis of amphiphilic polysuccinimide star copolymers for responsive delivery in plants,” published in Chemical Communications in 2015. The Royal Society of Chemistry’s May 2015 publication listing confirms the paper citation.

A patent record also describes stimuli-responsive polymeric nanoparticles and star architectures for plant delivery. A patent documents an invention disclosure; by itself, it does not establish independent replication, regulatory approval, or a product available to growers. The US11627738B2 patent record should be read in that context.
