A 2018 experimental coating combined a self-healing soft layer with a harder, scratch-resistant surface. Chemistry World described it as “as tough as teeth,” but its accessible report gives no measured toughness value or numerical comparison with teeth. The result is best understood as a promising layered-material design, not a demonstrated tooth-equivalent coating or a product ready to buy.
What the skin-inspired material is made of
The coating has two layers designed to work together:
- Soft inner layer: tannic acid and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) form a dynamic network held together by hydrogen bonds.
- Hard outer layer: PVA reinforced with graphene oxide nanosheets provides a more scratch-resistant surface.
The design takes inspiration from skin: a softer, repair-capable material beneath a tougher protective exterior. The researchers reported that neither layer fully recovered from scratching when tested on its own. The hybrid healed when the two layers were correctly integrated.

In the reported explanation, polymers from the dynamic inner layer diffuse into the damaged upper layer. The harder surface acts as a barrier that traps those polymers, helping the combined coating recover. The report describes water as the stimulus that initiates healing; it does not give a numerical measure of recovery or a quantified comparison with tooth toughness.

Why water limits some potential uses
Water-triggered healing could be acceptable indoors, but it may be inconvenient outdoors or on electronic devices. Ming Yang of Harbin Institute of Technology described water as unwanted for those applications. The 2018 report said the group was working on versions that would respond to light or heat. Those triggers were work in progress at the time, not established capabilities of the reported coating.
What “as tough as teeth” does—and does not—establish
The headline is a qualitative comparison, not a reported test result. The accessible account supplies neither a toughness statistic for the coating nor a numerical tooth benchmark. It therefore does not establish that the material matches teeth in toughness, nor does it allow a quantitative comparison of scratch resistance. The cited paper is X. Qi et al., published in ACS Nano in 2018 (DOI: 10.1021/acsnano.7b05478); the Chemistry World report does not provide detailed primary-paper measurements.

What could limit practical use
Manufacturing precise layers
Polymer chemist Wayne Hayes of the University of Reading highlighted the careful layer-by-layer assembly as an important part of the approach. Producing precise structures reliably remained a challenge, so promising laboratory design should not be confused with straightforward large-scale manufacture.

The report suggests future anti-scratch coatings and coatings for medical devices, and notes the researchers’ view that the components are biocompatible. It does not establish clinical validation, commercial availability, or a consumer-ready coating. Relatively low-cost ingredients such as PVA also do not, by themselves, demonstrate that the finished material would be inexpensive.

What the report supports
- A layered coating can self-heal when its soft dynamic layer and hard graphene-oxide-reinforced layer are integrated correctly.
- Water initiates healing in the reported system, which may not suit every proposed setting.
- The “as tough as teeth” wording is not backed by a numerical comparison in the accessible account.
- Manufacturing precision and real-world application remain important unanswered practical questions.
