A 2021 experimental study showed that a simple wood fire can turn natural, goethite-bearing ochre into red hematite pigment. In the tested samples, heating solid lumps directly in the fire was simpler and often produced cleaner pigment than heating powdered ochre in a container. The result makes campfire pigment-making plausible without proving exactly how ancient people did it.

Can a campfire turn yellow ochre red?

Yes, if the ochre contains goethite. Goethite is a hydrated iron mineral that gives some ochres a brown or yellow-brown color. Heating drives off water and transforms it into hematite, the red iron oxide used as pigment.

Natural ochre is a mixture of minerals and other components, not a uniform laboratory chemical. That distinction matters: the researchers found that natural goethite behaved differently from synthetic goethite used in earlier experiments. Walter Bowyer, a study coauthor, said: “We expected to confirm earlier results [with synthetic goethite] and found that natural goethite behaves very differently than synthetic.”

In experiments reported by Chemistry World on December 8, 2021, natural samples changed color readily across an approximate range of 300–900°C. That range describes the reported experiments, not a universal threshold for every ochre or fire.

  • DURABLE & LONG-LASTING: Matte yellow iron oxide powder, high-purity, quality consistency, soluble in water. Particle size 29 µm / 500 mesh. Easily dispersed into the dry mix.
  • ANY COLOR YOU WANT: Available in red, yellow, orange, brown, green, blue, grey and black. Pigment powder matte, opaque finish, producing warm earthy tones. All colorant are suitable for interior and exterior use and are intermixable to give a wide range of shades.
  • EASY TO USE & CLEAN: Yellow dry pigment powder, 5 oz/bag. For concrete mix use, typical ratio:1 part colorant to 20 parts concrete by weight. The more added, the deeper the color. Always do a small sample color test before working on a big project to get the perfect shade you desire.

Which heating method worked best?

The study compared ways of heating ochre powder and solid lumps. Its main practical finding was that direct-fire heating of solid lumps was straightforward and often yielded cleaner pigment. The researchers assessed color using visible reflectance spectroscopy, Munsell color notation and photographs; they reported that the brightness of red samples made in fires matched that of furnace-heated samples.

Sample and setup What the study found
Powder in crude containers Tested as a possible heating method; the study’s overall conclusion favored direct-fire solid lumps as simpler and often cleaner.
Powder placed between stones Tested as another possible method; the study’s overall conclusion favored direct-fire solid lumps as simpler and often cleaner.
Solid lumps placed directly in coals The most effective approach in the reported experiments and often the cleanest pigment, without needing precise temperature control for the tested natural samples.

These were experimental archaeology comparisons, not a quantified ranking of products or a guarantee that every sample will behave the same way. The findings show that the transformation can happen in a simple fire; they do not establish which method ancient pigment-makers actually used.

Did people need a special oven to make red ochre?

Not necessarily. The experiment challenges the idea that converting goethite to hematite required a carefully controlled furnace: the tested natural material could be transformed in a simple wood fire. Archaeologist Andrew Zipkin called this a “valuable insight,” noting that solid goethite lumps could be heated directly in a fire “without the need for precise temperature control.”

That does not mean ancient people never used more controlled heating arrangements. It means the experiment demonstrates that a special oven was not essential for the tested transformation. Reflectance spectroscopy also gave the researchers a way to compare the relative proportions of goethite and hematite in ochre, offering a tool for examining heat alteration in archaeological material.

What does the experiment tell us about ancient pigment-making?

The 2021 study by Zhenyu Lin and colleagues establishes feasibility: natural goethite-bearing ochre can be turned red with simple fire heating. It cannot, by itself, identify the exact technique, location or frequency of ancient use. Natural red hematite also occurs, so red pigment in an archaeological setting is not automatically evidence that people heated yellow or brown goethite to make it.

For historical context, Chemistry World reports archaeological evidence for human ochre use more than 300,000 years ago and evidence of intentional goethite heating to make hematite around 100,000 years ago. Those dates are contextual estimates reported in that 2021 article, not dates established by the modern replication experiment.

Did easy production help the technique spread?

Ease of production could have made the discovery more likely, but the experiment cannot determine how knowledge spread. Bowyer suggested that the simplicity of the process makes accidental discovery plausible and may have helped knowledge travel. Zipkin offered another interpretation: “It could just as easily have facilitated the repeated independent discovery of ochre heat treatment.” These are competing historical possibilities, not conclusions demonstrated by the fire experiments.
