A short, silent inhale may help male tokay geckos fit more sound into an advertisement call. A report published on 3 October 2026 describes calls produced on exhalation, with a brief inhalation between the two notes of a bi-note; extra pulses at the end of the second note can lengthen it further.
How the short breath fits into a longer call
The reported sequence is a two-part call, or bi-note. The gecko exhales to produce the first note, takes a very brief, silent “mini-breath” between notes, then exhales to produce the second. That interruption lets the animal begin another note without waiting for one uninterrupted exhalation to carry the entire bi-note.
The report describes the mini-breath as lasting approximately one tenth of a second. That is an approximate figure, not a population-level measurement. The authors’ summary says calls were produced exclusively during expiration at a constant rate, consistent with respiratory limits constraining call duration.
How the second note can last longer
The mini-breath is not the only reported way to extend a call. The account also describes male geckos adding terminal pulses to the second note. Those extra pulses lengthen the note; the article does not establish a universal number of pulses or a typical increase in duration.

The researchers interpret the acoustic signature of the terminal pulses as consistent with a vocal-fry-like register. This is an interpretation of sound, not direct evidence that vocal-fold motion was observed. The report identifies acoustic analysis and pose estimation as part of the approach, but its accessible account does not establish the detailed methods or operational definitions behind each call feature.
What the study observed—and what it does not establish
The report describes analysis of 16 video clips featuring seven captive male tokay geckos (Gekko gecko) calling spontaneously. The 16 clips are not 16 animals. These observations describe the recorded calls, but do not show how often the same mechanisms occur among wild tokays, across populations or seasons, or in other gecko species.
The account also reports that the geckos’ ear openings narrowed during calls. The authors propose that this might help protect hearing from loud self-generated sounds, but the observation alone does not demonstrate a protective function. That explanation remains a hypothesis.

Earlier work summarized in a Springer handbook chapter describes tokay advertisement calls as rattles followed by repeated bi-notes and reports that males can lengthen bi-note syllables in background noise, apparently making calls easier to detect. The chapter says duration, rather than level, changed in the cited noise study. This is useful context, but it is distinct from the 2026 report, which examined breathing during spontaneous calls rather than testing responses to background noise.

The account of the newer study also refers to longer, louder call types in noisy conditions. Because the handbook’s description differs on whether loudness changes, that comparison should not be treated as settled without consulting the cited primary noise study. The respiratory findings do not resolve that separate question.

Advertisement calls are signals, and their duration may carry information about the caller’s physical capacity. The study’s authors suggest tokay calls could function as “honest signals” of respiratory capacity. That is an interpretation of the reported breathing-call relationship, not proof that receivers assess respiratory ability or that call length reliably predicts fitness in wild animals.
The report’s central contribution is a proposed sequence for extending a call despite respiratory limits: exhale for the first note, take a very short breath between notes, then extend the second note with terminal pulses. The small captive sample makes this a finding about the calls recorded, not a general rule for all tokay geckos.
