A 2016 laboratory study showed that a mineral-based hydrogel could be shaped while wet, dried into rigid, transparent objects, and returned to a hydrogel state by swelling it in water. The authors proposed “mineral plastics” as a possible new class of material, but this demonstration did not establish a recyclable product or a replacement for conventional plastic.
How the mineral hydrogel changes from a gel to a rigid object
The material combined very small amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) nanoparticles with poly(acrylic acid). The polymer physically cross-linked the nanoparticles, forming a hydrogel: a water-containing network that can hold its shape while remaining soft and deformable.
In the wet state, the researchers reported that the hydrogel could be shaped and stretched, and that it could self-heal. Drying transformed it into a free-standing, rigid, transparent object. When that object was placed in water, it swelled and recovered the initial hydrogel state, according to the authors.
The study’s abstract describes the hydrogel as “shapeable, stretchable, and self-healable” and says it can “completely recover the initial hydrogel state” by swelling in water. These are reported properties of the material described in the paper, not evidence of repeated industrial recycling or performance in a finished product.

What the study means by “mineral plastics”
The authors used “mineral plastics” for the concept of a material that combines mineral particles and a polymer, with a wet-to-dry transformation that produces plastic-like objects. They suggested it might potentially replace conventional plastics. That wording is a proposal about possible future uses, not a finding that the hydrogel has replaced plastic in packaging, electronics, or another market.
The paper reports a materials demonstration rather than a product comparison. The sources available do not establish a named application in which this material outperforms conventional plastic, or provide a head-to-head comparison of strength, durability, production, or cost.

Does swelling the material in water prove it is recyclable?
It demonstrates a reversible state change under the reported conditions: drying produced rigid objects, and water swelling restored the hydrogel form. That is not, by itself, proof of a practical recycling system. A recycling claim for a real product would need to account for how the material is collected, processed, recovered, and made into another usable item, as well as whether its useful properties persist through those steps.

The study and coverage cited here do not establish commercial production, scale-up, a product-scale recycling process, or a comparative life-cycle assessment. They also do not show that the material is biodegradable or environmentally superior. The paper appeared in 2016, so its proposed applications should not be read as evidence of current availability.

What would need to be tested before it could replace plastic
A meaningful comparison would start with a specific use, because the requirements for a rigid container differ from those for a flexible film or a durable component. Evidence would need to address, at minimum:
- Functional performance and durability in the intended application.
- Whether it can be manufactured consistently at useful scale.
- How the material is recovered and processed after use, and whether that route yields material suitable for another use.
- Environmental impacts across production, use, and end of life, compared with the material it is intended to replace.
Those application-specific results are not established in the cited sources. The significance of the work is narrower but still useful: it showed that an ACC–poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel could be shaped wet, dried into a rigid transparent form, and returned to a gel by water swelling.
