A lamprey-inspired research prototype combines vacuum suction with a heat-switchable polymer to grip surfaces in air and underwater. In laboratory tests, it supported a load exceeding 850 times its own weight—but that ratio is not a universal rating, and the device is not identified as a product for sale.
What is the lamprey-inspired suction disc?
Described in a 2026 peer-reviewed paper, the amphibious disc takes inspiration from the oral sucker of Lethenteron reissneri. It combines a soft silicone lip with a thermally switchable shape-memory-polymer (SMP) panel. The lip creates vacuum suction; the panel helps the device adapt to uneven surfaces and hold on where an ordinary suction cup may leak.
The researchers demonstrated the disc on a mechanical arm, gripping and manipulating objects across air and water. The work points to possible uses in amphibious robots and underwater inspection or maintenance, but the demonstrations concern a research prototype, not a certified lifting product. - Make contact: The soft silicone lip presses against the target surface and establishes a vacuum seal.
- Heat the SMP panel: Heating softens the panel so it can conform to surface irregularities.
- Cool the panel: Cooling stiffens the SMP again, helping it mechanically interlock with surface asperities while vacuum is maintained.
That combination matters because vacuum alone depends on maintaining a seal. On rough surfaces, small gaps can let air or water pass under a conventional cup. The SMP layer adds a way to conform to and engage surface texture rather than relying only on a perfect seal.

What does “more than 850 times its weight” mean?
The 850-times figure is the ratio of supported load to the prototype disc’s own weight in reported laboratory tests. It is not a guarantee for every surface, pulling direction, object or consumer suction cup. A university-linked release describes a 70 g device lifting loads exceeding 850 times its own weight; that is a prototype demonstration, not a commercial rating. University-linked release

Is the 850× claim useful for comparing suction devices?
It is a striking measure of the prototype’s load relative to its own mass, but it does not by itself tell you whether it can lift a particular object safely. For a practical comparison, look at the full test conditions and the device’s intended use:

The reported results establish performance in specific experiments; they do not establish a certified working-load limit for routine lifting.
Can you buy this lamprey-inspired suction cup?
The sources describing this exact disc do not identify it as a retail product. If you need a conventional tool for lifting or gripping, search for a vacuum suction cup gripper or suction cup lifter. Those are adjacent product categories, not the lamprey-inspired research prototype, and their suitability depends on the tool’s own instructions and rated limits.
