In a 2023 self-test, VICE journalist Joseph Cox used a synthetic copy of his voice to pass Lloyds Bank’s automated Voice ID check and reach his own account. The demonstration showed that at least one bank authentication flow accepted a recorded, AI-generated voice. It did not show that every bank is vulnerable, or that a voice match alone was enough: the call also required Cox’s date of birth.
How Cox got through Lloyds Voice ID
On February 23, 2023, Cox reported that he tested Lloyds Bank’s automated phone service against his own account. He supplied about five minutes of his speech to ElevenLabs, generated audio clips, and played them into the call.
The system asked why he was calling, requested his date of birth, and prompted him to say, “my voice is my password.” The synthetic voice passed. Cox reported that he could then access his balances and recent transactions, and make transfers. He later wrote, “I couldn’t believe it—it had worked.”
Why the first attempts failed
Cox said his initial attempts did not work. He improved the result by having the model read a longer passage, which made the cadence sound more natural. He also reported that other voice-generation services he tried could not reproduce his British accent well enough, while ElevenLabs could. Those details describe his test; they do not establish how another person, voice model, or bank system would perform.

What the demonstration reveals about voice authentication
Voice ID compares a voice sample with a stored voiceprint. Lloyds had described its system as analyzing more than 100 voice characteristics and had compared a customer’s voice to a fingerprint. But matching the characteristics of a voice is not the same as proving that the authorized customer is speaking live. A convincing synthetic recording can reproduce the signal the system is set up to recognize.
The test also exposed a weakness in the surrounding identity check: Cox needed his date of birth as well as the cloned voice. A biometric check does not make other account details secret, and a date of birth may be exposed through data breaches, data brokers, or information a person shares publicly. The risk was therefore about a combination of factors, not voice alone.

What the test does—and does not—prove
What it does show
- In a controlled self-test, a consumer voice-cloning service and about five minutes of speech were enough for Cox’s synthetic voice to pass one production bank phone-authentication flow.
- Passing Voice ID gave him access to sensitive account functions, according to his report, not merely confirmation that the system recognized his voice.
- Voice authentication can be vulnerable if a system accepts synthetic or replayed audio as evidence of the speaker’s identity.
What it does not show
- It was a test of Lloyds’ system at that time, not a test of every bank, voice model, or anti-spoofing measure.
- It does not establish that voice cloning has become a common way to commit bank fraud. The sources cited in these reports provide no independent prevalence figure for successful synthetic-voice bank fraud.
- It does not show that Cox accessed someone else’s account. He tested his own account.
In the 2023 VICE report, Lloyds said Voice ID was optional, that it was deploying countermeasures, and that it had not seen a customer-fraud case using a synthetic voice at that time. That statement describes the bank’s position when the report appeared; it is not evidence about the current status of its controls or fraud reports.

The issue is not limited to whether a voiceprint can be copied. Banks also need to decide what a voice match authorizes, how the system detects recordings or generated speech, and what happens when customers lose access to other authentication methods.

On May 4, 2023, the U.S. Senate Banking Committee said AI-generated clips could fool bank authentication systems and sent letters to six large banks: JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, Charles Schwab, and TD Bank. The committee asked about the actions customers could take after voice authentication, how often systems were reviewed, safeguards against AI-generated audio, use of third parties, and voice-data storage, retention, and breach response. Committee chairman Sherrod Brown wrote, “Consumers deserve to understand how their voice data is being collected, stored, used, and retained.”
In 2025, the Associated Press reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman warned that AI had “fully defeated” financial institutions that still accept voiceprints as authentication. That warning reinforces the need to question voice-only authentication; it is not evidence that every bank’s voice system has failed or that all banks use the same controls.

What to use instead of voice ID
Ask your bank which non-voice authentication methods it supports and whether you can turn off voice verification. Prefer a method that adds a factor beyond your voice and personal details, and do not treat a voice match as your only safeguard. The best practical choice depends on what your bank and country support, how you would recover access if a device were lost, and how the bank handles biometric data.

- Check the bank’s app and security settings. Look for available sign-in verification or transaction-approval methods, and enable the strongest option the bank supports for your account.
- Ask about phishing-resistant options. If the bank offers passkeys or security keys, ask how they work for account access and recovery. Availability varies; do not assume your bank supports them.
- Keep recovery secure. Find out what the bank requires if you lose or replace a phone or security device. A stronger sign-in method is less useful if account recovery falls back to easily exposed personal details.
- Limit what a voice check can unlock. If voice ID is optional, consider disabling it. If you keep it, ask whether the bank requires another verification step for transfers or other sensitive actions.
- Ask how voice data is handled. Find out whether the bank stores a voiceprint or recordings, how long it retains them, whether third parties process them, and what happens after a data breach.
These questions matter because authentication choices involve different trade-offs: replay and synthetic-speech resistance, dependence on a separate device, recovery after loss, phishing resistance, biometric-data privacy, and availability. No single method is established here as the best choice for every customer or bank.

What to do if a voice-authenticated call seems suspicious
- Hang up rather than continuing a call that asks you to approve an unexpected transfer or disclose account details.
- Contact the bank using the phone number in its official app, on your card, or on a statement—not a number supplied by the caller.
- Ask the bank to review recent activity, revoke or change available authentication settings, and explain how to secure the account.
- If you see an unauthorized transaction, report it to the bank promptly and follow its instructions for disputing it.
