A GIFT City account can give an Indian investor a regulated route to certain global investments, but it is not a single account type or a shortcut around investment rules. Depending on the product, a resident individual may use the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) to fund an IFSC foreign-currency account, subscribe to an IFSC fund, or access overseas securities through an authorised provider. The route, costs, risks and tax treatment depend on the specific fund, bank or broker.
What a GIFT City account does—and what it does not do
GIFT-IFSC is India’s international financial-services centre. The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) supervises relevant financial products and services there. A GIFT City account is best understood as an access and administration arrangement: it can help connect you to eligible IFSC products, but it does not by itself determine what you may invest in or how an investment will be taxed.
There is no single standard “GIFT City account” with identical features at every provider. You might open a foreign-currency account with an eligible International Banking Unit (IBU), subscribe to a fund established in the IFSC, or use an IFSC broker for eligible overseas securities. Check the provider’s authorisation, the product’s permitted investments and its offer documents before transferring money.
Which route might fit your investing goal?
| Route | What it provides | May suit you if… | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| IFSC global-equity fund | A pooled investment fund with a stated global-equity mandate. DSP publishes one example. | You prefer investing through a fund rather than selecting individual overseas securities. | Mandate, minimum subscription, dealing and redemption terms, fees, currency exposure and the product’s tax disclosures. |
| IFSC foreign-currency account plus permitted investments | An account in a foreign currency with an eligible IBU, for investments permitted under applicable rules. | You want a foreign-currency account as part of accessing eligible IFSC investments. | Account eligibility, permitted uses, funding process, charges and the rules that apply to the intended investment. |
| IFSC global-access broker | A potential route to direct overseas securities through a broker. | You want to choose and hold eligible securities directly rather than use a pooled fund. | Current registration, available markets and instruments, custody arrangements, dealing costs, liquidity and tax documents. These details vary by provider. |
DSP is a named example of an IFSC global-equity fund, not a recommendation or a comparison of all available providers. The available evidence does not establish a universal list of IFSC banks or brokers, or a standard fee schedule across them.
#1 Best Overall
How a resident Indian can fund an IFSC investment
For a resident individual, the funding route generally falls under the RBI’s LRS framework. DSP and ICAI describe the LRS ceiling as USD 250,000 per resident individual per financial year. Treat that as an annual limit under the scheme, not a separate allowance for each GIFT City account, and confirm the applicable RBI rules and your remaining limit with your authorised dealer bank before remitting.
RBI directions permit resident individuals to open a foreign-currency account with an IFSC IBU for specified permissible investments. That does not make every investment or transfer permissible: the intended use still needs to comply with applicable FEMA, LRS and IFSC requirements.

- Choose the investment route. Decide whether you are subscribing to an IFSC fund, using a foreign-currency account for an eligible investment, or seeking access to securities through a broker. Confirm that the particular product and use are permitted for you.
- Complete onboarding. Open an FCA with an eligible IBU if the investment requires one, or complete the fund or broker’s subscription onboarding. Minimums and required documents are provider- and product-specific.
- Arrange the remittance through an authorised dealer bank. Follow the bank’s LRS process and provide the required declarations and documents. DSP describes a process using Form A2 and a USD remittance to its IFSC account; do not assume another provider uses the same steps or account details.
- Keep records after investing. Retain remittance confirmations, account and custody statements, fund documents and tax statements. Your Indian tax return and foreign-asset reporting obligations depend on your circumstances, so check what applies to you.
Tax and TCS depend on the product and the transaction
Do not assume that investing through GIFT City is automatically more tax-efficient than investing directly abroad. Tax treatment is product-specific, and the treatment described for one fund cannot be applied to every IFSC account or investment.

DSP’s disclosed global-equity fund example
DSP Fund Managers IFSC Private Limited’s 2026 product disclosures describe tax being paid at fund level for its fund and state that the investor does not pay capital-gains tax or TDS at redemption for that product. Its product page lists rates of 14.95% for long-term capital gains on holdings over 24 months, 42.744% for short-term capital gains on holdings of 24 months or less, and 35.88% for dividend or income. These are product-level disclosures, not general rates for GIFT City investments; check the current offer documents and your own tax position.
TCS on remittances
The same DSP product page states that 20% TCS applies to the amount exceeding INR 10 lakh remitted abroad in a financial year. This is a disclosure associated with DSP’s product and the remittance it describes; do not treat it as a statement of every investor’s final tax cost or as a universal account charge. Verify the current rule and how it applies to your remittance with your authorised dealer bank or tax adviser.
Compare the full cost and service, not just the account label
Before choosing a fund, account or broker, compare the details that can materially affect access and returns:
Rank #4
- Investment scope: Which countries, markets, funds and securities are actually available under the provider’s current offering?
- Funding and currency: What currency must you send, how is conversion handled, and what bank, remittance or foreign-exchange charges apply?
- Minimums and liquidity: What is the minimum investment, when can you subscribe or redeem, and what dealing cut-offs or settlement terms apply?
- Custody and provider status: Who holds the assets, what investor protections apply, and is the provider currently authorised for the service it offers?
- Ongoing costs: Check fund expenses, brokerage, custody, account maintenance and any other applicable charges in the current documents.
- Tax and records: Understand what statements you receive, what is taxed at product or investor level, and what information you may need for Indian tax and foreign-asset reporting.
- Beneficiaries and estate handling: Ask how nominees or beneficiaries are recorded and what process applies if an account holder dies.
Fees, spreads, custody charges, minimums and dealing frequency vary by provider; they are not established as standard across GIFT City. Read the latest offer documents and provider terms rather than relying on a general description of the route.

A pooled IFSC fund may be more straightforward if you want exposure through a managed vehicle and are comfortable with its stated mandate, fees and dealing terms. An FCA may be useful if you need a foreign-currency account for eligible IFSC investments. A broker route may be more relevant if you want to choose individual overseas securities and have verified the broker’s markets, custody and charges.
Best Value
In every case, the account structure does not remove market risk, currency movements, liquidity constraints or provider-specific costs. Decide based on the investment itself and your circumstances, not on the assumption that the words “GIFT City” guarantee broader access, lower tax or better returns.
