A gecko-inspired dry adhesive can release an object when ultraviolet (UV) light makes its surface bend and peel away. Turn the light off, and the material returns to its sticky shape. The effect is reversible shape change—not glue dissolving—and so far it has been shown in laboratory research, not a consumer product.
How can light make an adhesive let go?
The 2017 prototype uses a soft, layered structure: a liquid-crystal elastomer between two layers of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). One PDMS face has tiny mushroom-shaped structures inspired by the fibers on gecko toes. Those microstructures make contact with a surface to create dry adhesion, without relying on a liquid glue.
The elastomer contains azobenzene, a molecule that changes configuration under UV illumination. That response flexes the layered material, bending the microstructured face so it peels away from the object. When the UV light is removed, the material returns to a flatter, sticky state. The adhesive is not consumed or chemically degraded in the process. Chemistry World reported the mechanism on 19 January 2017.

The researchers used the adhesive to pick up and transport objects larger than the adhesive area, then released them by applying UV light. Chemistry World reported tests involving glass spheres, microscope slides and plastic Eppendorf tubes. The demonstration required an initial preload force of 6 mN to establish adhesion; the report described switching as occurring “within seconds,” without giving a more precise time.
Those results describe a laboratory demonstration, not a measure of performance across materials, object sizes or real-world handling conditions. The report does not establish durability or suitability for commercial use.
What could limit practical use?
Speed and the force needed to grip
Stanford researcher Elliot Hawkes questioned how quickly the adhesive could grasp an object and whether it could stick with less preload. A substantial initial force can be a problem when handling delicate items. These were questions about the prototype’s potential, not reported measurements of a maximum speed or a minimum usable preload.

Light must reach the adhesive interface
UV-triggered release depends on light reaching the responsive material. A 2021 review notes that this can make light-triggered debonding unsuitable for bonding opaque substrates. That is a general constraint of approaches using light to trigger release; it is not a measured failure reported for this particular 2017 device. The 2021 review discusses the limitation.
How does later research compare?
A separate study first published on 26 March 2025 reports a chemically crosslinked polymer film with a nanoscale layered structure. It expands and contracts reversibly under UV light, releasing picked-up objects when illuminated and regaining adhesion after the light is stopped. The authors describe it as a possible platform for light-controlled object transport and remote robotics.

This is a different material from the 2017 liquid-crystal-elastomer and PDMS prototype. The available reports do not provide a standardized, head-to-head performance comparison.

Is this adhesive used in robots or available to buy?
Light-controlled object transport is a proposed direction, not a demonstrated deployed application. In the 2017 report, researcher Emre Kizilkan described the work as “the starting point” for creating quick, reversible detachment. He said the team hoped to use the material in a light-driven locomoting robot and planned to optimize layer thickness and control of light-induced deformation.

The reported work supports no claim that either material is a consumer product. A UV flashlight or ordinary gecko-inspired tape should not be treated as an equivalent implementation: the release behavior depends on the specifically engineered responsive material and structure.
