A player’s absence does not automatically free a roster spot or change the rules for making an in-game substitution. Those are separate matters: roster bylaws govern who may be listed and take part in team activities, while playing rules govern who may enter the field. The details depend on the team’s division, the season and when and why the player is unavailable.
Does an injured player free up a roster spot?
Not automatically. Under NCAA Division I Bylaw 17.2, a student-athlete generally must be included on the submitted roster to participate in athletically related activities after the roster-submission deadline. A student left off the submitted roster generally cannot take part in countable, required or voluntary athletically related activity after that deadline. The sport must remain within its roster limit through the end of the academic year or playing season, whichever is later. (NCAA Division I Manual, Bylaw 17.2)
That means ordinary game-week unavailability—whether from an injury, illness, suspension or another cause—is not, by itself, permission to add another player after the deadline. A replacement must fit a specific bylaw exception and satisfy its conditions.

Bylaw 17.2.5 lists limited circumstances that can permit a replacement. They include:
#1 Best Overall
- Wilson NCAA Composite Football - Youth Size, Brown
- SEWN CONSTRUCTION: The strong composite cover combined with enhanced lining allows for extended durability and all-weather performance
- CLASSIC COLOR: NCAA Red that informs a classic look and feel from the roots of Wilson's traditional football
- GRIP STRIPES: Double white grip stripes offer extra fingerpoint grips when throwing to create a seamless spiral
- STAYS INFLATED: A butyl rubber bladder provides excellent long-term air retention to keep your ball from going flat
- A medically documented season-ending injury or illness occurring after roster submission but before the first contest used for championship selection. The exception is administered by member conferences.
- A fall-sport student-athlete withdrawing from the institution between regular academic terms. Leaving the team while remaining enrolled does not meet this condition.
- A student-athlete exhausting eligibility at or between terms before the next championship-segment opportunity.
- Permanent ineligibility resulting from an NCAA violation.
- A professional draft entry by a student-athlete who remains enrolled full time.
The exhausted-eligibility language was updated in a September 10, 2026 NCAA amendment (Proposal ER-2026-7). Because these exceptions turn on timing and other specific facts, a school or conference must determine whether a particular case qualifies; an injury alone is not enough.
Football’s midyear replacement exception
In football, a player replaced at midyear may continue practicing and competing during the second academic term through the end of the season. The replacement generally cannot participate in team activities or receive competition-related travel expenses until the season ends. The bylaw allows certain individual activities after the replacement enrolls and attends classes. This can matter when a season continues into a bowl, College Football Playoff or NCAA championship competition. (NCAA Division I Manual, Bylaw 17.2)

What is the 105-player limit—and does it apply on game day?
The NCAA’s adopted Division I legislation lists a football roster limit of 105 for institutions that are members of a defendant conference or opt into the House settlement framework. It takes effect beginning in academic year 2027–28. The adopted table does not establish 105 as a universal limit for every NCAA division, conference or college-football governing body. (NCAA Division I Proposal 2026-73)
Nor does that figure establish a universal Saturday dress list or say that only 105 players may dress or play on a given game day. “Game-day roster” is often used casually, but the cited rule is a submitted-roster limit. To answer for a particular team, check its governing body, division, conference and season, along with any separate competition rules.

Can a team substitute for an injured player during a game?
Yes. A roster absence does not suspend ordinary football substitutions. A team can send another eligible player onto the field between plays under the playing rules; the absent player’s roster place does not first have to be legally freed. The practical question is whether the incoming player is eligible and the team follows the applicable substitution and participation rules.
Each team may have no more than 11 players participating on a down. A specific NCAA interpretation addresses a defensive substitution foul after the two-minute timeout in either half:

- If 12 or more defenders participate in the down, the offended team may choose to reset the game clock to the time at the snap, alongside the substitution-foul penalty. The clock restarts on the next snap.
- If a twelfth defender is trying to leave but remains on the field at the snap without influencing the play, the ordinary five-yard substitution penalty applies without the clock adjustment.
This interpretation was issued October 16, 2024; it concerns that specific late-game defensive situation, not routine substitutions generally. For a live game or a current-season decision, consult the applicable rule book and any conference or competition modifications. The NCAA football rules page lists the official rule book and 2026 resources.

Before treating an absence as a roster change, establish four facts:
Quick Recap
- Which rules apply? Identify the governing body, division, conference and whether the program is covered by the cited Division I framework.
- When did the absence occur? Compare it with roster submission, the first championship-selection contest, academic-term boundaries and the season’s end.
- Why is the player unavailable? Determine whether the reason meets a defined replacement exception and whether the required documentation or conference administration applies.
- Is this a roster question or a game question? Adding someone to a submitted roster is different from substituting an eligible player during a game.
