Bhanu Prakash says a CAN-SPAM address requirement he encountered while building marketing flows for his AI culinary platform, Ages & Spices, led him to investigate broader website compliance problems—and build DarkLens, an AI-assisted scanner. The $53,088 figure is the Federal Trade Commission’s stated maximum penalty for each separate email that violates CAN-SPAM, not an automatic fine for one missing address. DarkLens is described as an issue-spotting tool; the available account does not establish that it can determine legal compliance.
What prompted the DarkLens project
In his DEV Community account, Bhanu Prakash says he was building marketing flows for Ages & Spices when he encountered CAN-SPAM’s requirement to include a valid physical postal address in commercial email. The possible penalty caught his attention and prompted a wider investigation into digital compliance.
Prakash says that investigation expanded to GDPR and interface practices commonly described as dark patterns, including “Roach Motel” flows that make it easy to sign up but difficult to leave, hidden fees, and fake urgency. He describes DarkLens as the project that followed: an automated scanner intended for e-commerce and SaaS sites.

What the $53,088 CAN-SPAM figure means
The FTC’s CAN-SPAM Act: A Compliance Guide for Business says each separate email violating the Act may be subject to penalties of up to $53,088. That is a maximum, not a guaranteed or automatic charge simply because a marketing email omits an address. The FTC guide covers commercial email, including messages promoting content on commercial websites.
#1 Best Overall
The Act’s requirements include accurate sender and header information, non-deceptive subject lines, identification of advertising, a valid physical postal address, and a way for recipients to opt out. The statute separately sets out requirements for advertising identification, opt-out notices, and a valid address, and addresses false headers and deceptive subject lines: 15 U.S.C. § 7704.
A home street address is not the only option
The FTC guide says a valid address may be a current street address, a USPS-registered post office box, or a private mailbox registered with a qualifying commercial mail receiving agency. The address requirement therefore does not mean every small business must publish an owner’s home address. See the FTC’s business compliance guide for the permitted address types.
How DarkLens is described as working
Prakash’s account describes DarkLens as using Next.js and Supabase. Its proposed analysis flow starts with a crawler that visits a target URL and extracts the page’s DOM structure. The system then removes unnecessary scripts and styles, passes semantic HTML to an LLM-based heuristic engine, and checks the interface against a database of known dark patterns and compliance risks. The intended output is an “auditor-ready report.”

- Prepare: Strip unneeded scripts and styles, leaving semantic HTML for analysis.
- Analyze: Use LLM heuristics to look for patterns associated with known interface risks.
- Report: Present findings in a report intended to support an audit.
These are the architecture and goals Prakash reports, not independently verified product capabilities. The available account does not establish DarkLens’s implementation details beyond that description, report quality, launch status, or legal sufficiency.
What an AI website scanner can—and cannot—establish
A scanner can be useful for surfacing pages or interface patterns that deserve review. But a heuristic match is not the same as a legal finding: context matters, applicable duties can depend on the specific practice and circumstances, and a crawler only sees what it successfully reaches and interprets. For a tool to support a defensible review, its findings should be checked against explicit requirements and the evidence behind each flag should be inspectable.
No independent accuracy results, coverage tests, legal review, or validation evidence for DarkLens are established in the available account. Its “auditor-ready” description should therefore be read as an aspiration, not proof that a generated report establishes compliance. Developers considering this kind of system should evaluate crawl coverage, handling of dynamic pages, reproducibility, false positives and false negatives, and whether a human reviewer validates findings.

The developer question behind the project
Prakash raises a practical question for builders: “How are you handling DOM parsing before sending it to your AI models?” Cleaning a page into semantic content can reduce irrelevant markup in the model’s input, but it also makes extraction a consequential step: anything removed or missed cannot inform the later analysis. In a compliance-oriented workflow, keeping traceable page evidence alongside each finding helps reviewers understand what the model saw.
