The HOVERAir X1 ProMax is a 193 g foldable camera drone that makes hands-free tracking unusually easy and records up to 8K/30fps. Its strongest case is for travelers, cyclists, skiers and social-video creators who want a drone to follow the action without a conventional controller. The trade-offs are short battery life, no built-in GPS or all-round obstacle avoidance, and accessories that can push the price well beyond its $699 US standard price.
What the X1 ProMax does well
The X1 ProMax is designed to take off from your hand, follow you and capture footage in automated flight modes. It has ten intelligent modes, including Follow, Orbit, Bird’s Eye, Dolly Track, Dolly Zoom, Ski Mode and Cycling Mode. That makes it particularly appealing when stopping to pilot a drone would interrupt a ride, run, ski descent or travel shot.
At about 193 g, it folds down for travel and is much less cumbersome to carry than a conventional camera drone. Its camera combines a two-axis mechanical gimbal with electronic stabilization. Tom’s Guide praised its tracking and hands-free shooting, while WIRED rated it 7/10 and described its 4K video quality as “really solid.”

Does it really shoot 8K?
Yes. The camera uses a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor and records up to 8K at 30 frames per second. It can also record 4K at up to 120fps for slow motion, plus 4K 10-bit HLG at 60fps. Those are real recording modes, not merely an upscale label.

- Fly Fast, Follow Fast: This 8k camera drone features an upgraded aerodynamic design to minimize drag, allowing it to reach follow speeds of up to 42 KM/H(26 mph) and a top burst speed of 60 KM/H. The enhanced chip and tracking algorithm keep you centered in the frame, even during high-speed activities. It's been specifically upgraded for capturing cycling and skiing action.
However, resolution alone does not make 8K the best reason to buy this drone. WIRED called 8K “little more than a marketing gimmick on a camera so tiny,” while praising its 4K footage. New Atlas also noted that 8K is not available across all flight modes. If you mostly share footage on phones or social platforms, smooth, well-framed 4K may matter more than the maximum resolution. Treat 8K as a useful option for selected shots, not a guarantee that every automated flight will capture 8K.
How long does the battery last?
Expect about 16 minutes of flight time per battery. That is a short session for an outing where you want to capture several passes, reposition or wait for the right moment. A spare X1 ProMax battery is a sensible addition if you plan to film beyond a quick flight; the batteries are hot-swappable, according to New Atlas reviewer Ben Coxworth.
The launch Combo Kit included a second battery, a charging hub and a 65W adapter. It is the more practical configuration for longer outings, though its price is substantially higher than the one-battery package.

How much does it cost, and what do the extras add?
Prices and bundles vary by region and can change. The figures below are launch or review-listed prices, not a guarantee of current availability.
| Configuration | Listed price | What the cited coverage says is included |
|---|---|---|
| Standard package | $699 / £639 at launch | One battery, USB-C cable and soft bag |
| Combo Kit | $879 / £799 at launch | Second battery, charging hub and 65W adapter |
| Beacon and Joystick bundle | $258, listed by WIRED | Optional Beacon and Joystick accessories |
| X1 ProMax skiing bundle | $1,620, listed by Tom’s Guide | Bundle contents and current availability depend on the offer |
The standard US price listed for the X1 ProMax is $699. Adding accessories can move the total above $1,000, so compare the complete configuration you would actually use rather than the drone’s entry price alone.
Is the Beacon and Joystick worth buying?
Not for everyone. The X1 ProMax is built around automated, hands-free shooting, so you can use its tracking modes without buying the optional controls. The Beacon and Joystick make more sense if you want manual control, voice commands, a Beacon you can mount on a bike, or a longer transmission range.

Tom’s Guide lists a 500 m transmission range for the drone and says the Beacon can extend it to 1 km (0.62 miles). In its testing, Tom’s Guide found that the Beacon understood voice commands well and that its microphone’s noise reduction worked effectively. The extra range and control options are useful, but they come at additional cost. WIRED also found the Beacon and Joystick expensive, and noted that the Beacon’s small screen is less convenient for piloting than a larger controller display.

Limited flight confidence in difficult conditions
The X1 ProMax has no built-in GPS and no all-round obstacle avoidance. That limits confidence in complex surroundings and high winds, and makes it a less reassuring choice if you expect dependable return-to-home behavior. It is better suited to planned shots in open areas than to flying close to obstacles or relying on the drone to recover from every situation.

Take charge with manual control through the App, optimizing flight paths to capture that shot you want. Kindly note that video previews through the Hover X1 App album may display high-speed, low-resolution thumbnails
Short endurance and a high total cost
A 16-minute flight per battery means you may need to land and swap batteries during a longer outing. WIRED criticized the short battery life, high price and extra controller cost. Together, those factors make it important to budget for the configuration you need rather than assume the $699 entry price covers an extended filming session.
How it compares with DJI alternatives
The X1 ProMax’s clearest advantage over the DJI Neo and DJI Flip is its focus on hands-free tracking and its ability to record up to 8K. The DJI options can offer lower entry prices or longer flight times, but the available comparison information does not establish like-for-like prices, endurance figures, sensing features or bundle contents for those models. Check the exact regional package and specifications before treating any price or flight-time comparison as equivalent.
For buyers also considering the DJI Mini 3 or Air 3S, the choice depends on whether automated tracking or conventional drone capabilities matter more. The X1 ProMax is aimed at compact, self-flying capture; buyers who prioritize longer endurance, GPS-based return behavior or all-round obstacle avoidance should investigate alternatives first and verify those features on the exact model and package.
Quick Recap
Who should buy the HOVERAir X1 ProMax?
- Good fit: Travelers and social-video creators who value compact storage and want the drone to follow them with minimal piloting.
- Good fit: Cyclists and skiers who want automated tracking modes and are willing to plan around short flights.
- Plan for an extra battery: Anyone expecting more than a short filming session should consider the Combo Kit or a spare battery.
- Skip or compare carefully: Buyers who need long endurance, built-in GPS, confident return-to-home behavior or all-round obstacle avoidance should look at alternatives before choosing the X1 ProMax.
- Make the Beacon optional: Add it if you will use manual control, voice commands, bike mounting or the extended transmission range—not simply because it is bundled with a premium drone.
