A hot wallet keeps the keys that control crypto in an internet-connected environment; a cold wallet keeps those keys offline. Hot wallets make transactions easier to access but face greater online exposure. Cold storage reduces that exposure, while making secure backups and physical protection your responsibility. Neither term says who owns or controls the keys: self-custody and third-party custody can each use hot, cold, or a mix.
What does a crypto wallet store?
A crypto wallet manages the private keys or passcodes used to access and control crypto assets. The assets themselves are recorded on the blockchain; they do not sit inside a phone, computer, or hardware wallet. NIST, quoting ISO 22739:2020, defines a wallet as an application used to generate, manage, store, or use private and public keys, implemented in software or hardware. NISTIR 8301 and the SEC Investor.gov bulletin explain the role of wallets and keys.
Access depends on the relevant keys and recovery information. If you lose them and have no usable backup or recovery path, you may permanently lose access. A device is therefore not a substitute for understanding how its keys are backed up and restored.

What is the difference between hot and cold storage?
| Factor | Hot wallet | Cold wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Key connectivity | Keys are managed in an internet-connected environment. | Keys are kept offline; signing typically requires physical human intervention or authentication. |
| Access | More readily accessible for routine transactions. | Less immediately convenient; offline use adds steps. |
| Primary exposure | More exposure to internet-based attacks. | Less exposure to online attacks, but still vulnerable to physical loss, theft, damage, backup failure, and user error. |
| Common examples | Desktop, mobile, and web wallet applications. | A wallet generated on an air-gapped computer or a dedicated hardware wallet. |
These distinctions follow NISTIR 8301 and the SEC Investor.gov bulletin. “Cold” describes how keys are kept, not a particular brand or necessarily one specific kind of device.

Hot storage: convenient access, more online exposure
Hot wallets are connected to the internet, which makes it easier to access them when sending or receiving crypto. Desktop, mobile, and web applications are common examples. That connectivity also creates more exposure to cyberthreats. The SEC Investor.gov bulletin describes hot wallets as internet-connected and notes that convenience comes with online security risks.
A hot wallet may suit funds you expect to use for regular transactions, provided you protect access to the device and wallet. Connectivity alone does not tell you whether a provider holds the keys for you or you hold them yourself.

Cold storage: offline keys, physical responsibilities
A cold wallet keeps its keys offline. NIST describes cold wallets as not connected to the internet; examples include wallets created on air-gapped computers and dedicated hardware wallets. With a hardware wallet, private keys can be used for signing without revealing them to applications, as described in NISTIR 8301.

A device or paper backup can be stolen, damaged, or lost. You can also compromise security by disclosing a recovery phrase or approving a fraudulent transaction. Before choosing a device, check that it supports the assets you use and that you understand its setup, signing, and recovery process. Devices have a purchase cost, and their security and support details should be checked against current manufacturer information.

Hot versus cold is separate from who controls the keys
Hot and cold refer to connectivity. Custody describes who manages the keys. In self-custody, you control the keys and are responsible for protecting and recovering them. With third-party custody, a provider manages access. Either arrangement may use hot wallets, cold wallets, or both, as the SEC Investor.gov bulletin makes clear.
The UK government uses “hosted” for wallets where a third party stores or transfers cryptoassets, and “unhosted” for a wallet with a key administered by the person. Those custody terms should not be mistaken for synonyms of hot and cold. See the UK government’s cryptoasset definitions.

How to choose a setup that fits your use
For frequent transactions
An internet-connected wallet can make everyday transfers more convenient. Keep in mind that online access increases exposure to cyberthreats, and consider how much you need readily available rather than treating a hot wallet as a default home for all holdings.

For longer-term storage
Offline storage can reduce online attack exposure for assets you do not need to access often. It makes backup, physical security, and recovery planning especially important. Bitcoin.org describes combining a hot wallet for small spending amounts with cold storage for savings; that is an example, not a universal allocation rule. Its FAQ explains the distinction.

For third-party custody
If you prefer not to manage keys yourself, investigate the provider’s supported assets, security safeguards, storage practices, fees, and what happens if the provider fails or access is interrupted. A custodian’s use of cold storage does not remove the need to understand the custody arrangement and its terms. The SEC Investor.gov bulletin recommends investigating custodians’ safeguards and practices.
Protect keys and recovery information
- Never share a private key or seed phrase. Anyone who obtains the information may be able to control the associated assets.
- Secure backups against both theft and loss. An offline backup still needs protection from physical damage, loss, and unauthorized access.
- Understand recovery before relying on a wallet. Know what information is required to restore access and where it is stored.
- Review transactions before signing. Offline key storage does not prevent you from authorizing a fraudulent or unintended transaction.
The SEC Investor.gov bulletin advises users not to share private keys or seed phrases and highlights the physical risks of cold storage.
