Neither provider wins outright on the evidence available. IONOS is easier to compare on price, because its US pricing page lists the monthly rate after the first year for each shared plan. HostGator’s promotional rate applies only to the initial term, and its regular renewal rate is shown in the customer control panel rather than on a public plan page, so the two headline prices cannot be compared directly. The better choice depends on which costs, included features and support terms matter most to you. The prices below were checked on October 7, 2026, and they can change.
What IONOS publishes about price
IONOS’s US web-hosting page lists four shared plans, each with a one-year introductory monthly price and a stated monthly price after that term. These are page-listed offers, not a guaranteed checkout quote. Taxes may apply, and promotions can change. You can check the current offers on the IONOS web hosting page.
| Plan | Monthly price, first year | Monthly price after the one-year term | Storage | Email addresses | Server resources | CDN | Malware scanning |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $4 | $8 | 100 GB NVMe | 1 | Standard | Not listed | Malware scanner |
| Starter | $6 | $10 | 200 GB NVMe | 2 | Extended | Included | Malware scanner |
| Plus | $1 | $14 | 350 GB NVMe | 4 | 5x | Included | Malware scanner |
| Ultimate | $10 | $18 | 500 GB NVMe | 5 | 10x | Included | Malware scanner Pro with automatic repair |
The Plus introductory price is unusually deep, and IONOS’s separate $1 web hosting page covers that offer. Read its terms alongside the main plan page before you rely on the first-year figure.
What the monthly prices add up to over 24 months
The table below multiplies the page-listed monthly rates by 12 for each year. It is simple arithmetic, not a checkout total. It excludes taxes, domain costs and add-ons, and a checkout may bill the term differently.
#1 Best Overall
| IONOS plan | Year 1 (12 × first-year rate) | Year 2 (12 × later rate) | Total for 24 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $48 | $96 | $144 |
| Starter | $72 | $120 | $192 |
| Plus | $12 | $168 | $180 |
| Ultimate | $120 | $216 | $336 |
Plus is the cheapest plan in year one, but its second-year rate is higher than Essential’s and Starter’s. Over 24 months it costs more than Essential and less than Starter, so the cheapest entry price is not the cheapest two-year option.
HostGator: the renewal rate is the number you need
HostGator’s shared website hosting page has a live plan selector and states that promotional prices apply only to the initial term. The regular renewal rate appears in the customer control panel. The page does not give a stable, plan-specific renewal figure, so this article cannot place one next to IONOS’s published renewal prices.
To get a comparable number before you buy:
- Open the HostGator shared hosting page and select the plan and term you are considering.
- Record the introductory price and the term length it applies to.
- If the checkout screen shows a renewal amount for that plan, write it down. If it does not, do not assume one.
- After purchase, open the customer control panel and find the regular renewal rate for your plan. Record it.
- Calculate your 24-month total using the regular rate, and add taxes and any domain renewal.
If you cannot find a renewal figure before you pay, compare the live checkout totals for both providers instead of comparing introductory prices.

HostGator’s page describes shared hosting as server space shared with other websites, with each account receiving a share of bandwidth. That is a reasonable low-cost option for ordinary sites, but the page does not quantify how much resources are shared or how that affects performance. The free-domain offer also lists Cloud signups, which is covered in the availability section below.
Rank #3
Backups and support
HostGator lists SSL and what it calls courtesy website backups. The word “courtesy” signals that backups are not presented as a guaranteed, defined service, so do not treat them as a recovery plan. Support also depends on the plan. HostGator’s support table shows chat only in one plan column and phone plus chat in two others. Find your plan’s column before you assume phone support is available.
IONOS’s feature detail section lists daily backup and data recovery, a line item shown on its $1 web hosting page. IONOS also states that 24/7 support is included, and a 30-day money-back guarantee applies. The published pages do not name the support channels for IONOS plans, so confirm that at checkout.
Rank #4
Performance: no basis for naming a speed winner
Neither provider’s official pages include independent, comparable speed tests, and the pages do not show how quickly either company’s support team responds. Any claim that one host is faster would go beyond what the published evidence supports. If speed matters to your site, test the same site on comparable plans from each provider, from the same location, over the same period, and compare time to first byte and page load times. Keep the test running through the first renewal cycle as well, since introductory and standard plans may behave differently over time.
Plan availability for new customers
HostGator’s hosting comparison chart states that Cloud, Reseller and Optimized WordPress plans are no longer offered to new signups during its customer-portal upgrade. The shared hosting promotion still lists Cloud among qualifying signups for the free domain. Because those pages conflict, do not plan around a Cloud plan or its free domain until the checkout confirms that it is available to you.
Best Value
Which provider fits which buyer
- Lowest entry price in year one: IONOS Plus, at $1 a month for the first year on the published offer, though its second-year rate is $14 a month.
- Predictable published renewal: IONOS Essential at $8 a month after year one, if 100 GB and one mailbox are enough.
- Several mailboxes or a CDN: IONOS Starter and above list CDN access, and Starter has two mailboxes while Plus and Ultimate have four and five.
- Free SSL and a possible free domain: HostGator, once you have confirmed the regular renewal rate and the domain’s renewal price in your account.
- Dependable backups and phone support: confirm the exact backup terms and support channel for the plan you choose from either provider, because neither page guarantees them for every tier.
Before you buy
- Compare the 24-month totals, using the regular renewal rate for HostGator and the stated later rate for IONOS.
- Check the checkout total for taxes and any separately charged extras.
- Confirm the storage, mailbox count and support channel for the exact plan.
- Confirm whether backups are included, and how they can be restored.
- Check whether the free domain is available on your plan, and what it costs to renew.
If you are starting a small site, the cheapest reasonable path is to compare the two-year totals and confirm that the included storage, mailboxes and support match what you need. Choose on those terms rather than on the first-year discount alone.
