The Honor Life S3 looks like a close competitor to the Xteink X4 Pro, but it is not an obvious upgrade for existing Xteink owners. Honor’s reported reader is lighter and has a sharper, smaller display; the Xteink has a larger screen, front light and physical buttons. More importantly, Honor’s global availability remains unconfirmed in reporting dated September 29, 2026.

Honor’s figures come from TechRadar’s report rather than an official Honor product page; searches for official product documentation did not return one. Xteink’s specifications are listed on its official X4 Pro product page. WIRED’s price listing is a time-sensitive reference, not a guaranteed current offer.

What the smaller Honor screen changes

The Honor is reported to have a 3.68-inch display at 259 pixels per inch, while the Xteink’s display measures 4.3 inches at 219 PPI. The Honor’s higher pixel density means pixels are packed more closely; it does not mean the screen is larger or that text will appear larger. The Xteink gives you more physical reading area, while the Honor’s reported dimensions favor a smaller, lighter device.

That distinction matters on readers this compact. A smaller screen can be easier to carry, but it leaves less room for text and can mean more frequent page turns. WIRED identifies frequent page turns as one of the X4 Pro’s drawbacks. Readers who prioritize a more legible, less cramped page may prefer the Xteink’s larger display, even though its pixel density is lower.

Buttons and lighting favor the Xteink

TechRadar describes the Honor as touchscreen-only. Xteink lists both touch controls and physical buttons, plus a front light. Buttons are useful when you want to turn pages without repeatedly touching the screen; the front light makes the X4 Pro more adaptable when ambient light is low. The cited Honor report does not establish whether the Life S3 has a front light, so do not assume it matches this feature.

The Honor is reported to weigh 61 g and measure 5.6 mm thick, against 72 g and 5.95 mm for the Xteink. Those differences make the Honor the more compact option on paper, but availability and the absence of the Xteink’s confirmed light and buttons complicate any simple portability win.

Neither device is a conventional ebook-store reader

The Honor reportedly runs a custom operating system rather than Android, and TechRadar says it does not provide access to Kindle or Kobo stores. Books are transferred wirelessly through Honor Smart Space, and the device uses microSD storage and supports common ebook and document formats, according to that report.

Xteink lists EPUB and TXT support, Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz and a pogo-pin port; its product page also lists JPG and BMP image support. WIRED notes that the X4 Pro has no built-in ebook store, so owners need to supply and manage their own files. That makes file sourcing and transfer part of the purchase decision rather than a minor setup detail.

Its stated in-box contents include a matte screen protector, two adhesive metal rings and a magnetic charging adapter; the product page says a charging cable is not included. These are manufacturer-listed specifications and box contents, not independent battery-life findings.

Is the Honor compelling enough to regret buying an Xteink?

For an X4 Pro owner, the Honor’s reported advantages are a lower weight, slimmer body and higher pixel density. Those are real trade-offs, but the Honor’s smaller screen, touchscreen-only controls and unconfirmed global release mean they do not amount to a clear replacement case. The Xteink retains the larger display, physical buttons and front light.

TechRadar writer James Rogerson summed up the existing-owner angle: “Personally, there’s nothing here that would tempt me away from the Xteink X4 Pro that I already have, but if I didn’t already own that device and this was available, I’d certainly consider it.” That distinction is useful: the Honor may be worth considering for someone choosing between tiny readers, but only if it can actually be bought in their market and its compromises suit their reading habits.

What to check before choosing

  • Confirm local availability: TechRadar reported the Honor as announced for China, with global availability unconfirmed as of September 29, 2026. Do not treat it as a buyable alternative in your country without newer confirmation.
  • Decide whether size or reading area matters more: the Honor is reported smaller and lighter, while the Xteink’s listed display is larger.
  • Consider your reading conditions: Xteink confirms a front light and physical buttons; the cited report does not establish those features for Honor.
  • Plan how you will get books: neither product is presented as a conventional reader with a built-in Kindle or Kobo store. Check format compatibility and how you will transfer your files.
