Honeywell said on March 22, 2021, that it had returned to service after a malware intrusion disrupted a limited number of its information technology systems. The company also said it had secured its systems and revoked unauthorized access, but its investigation was still ongoing. That dated statement does not establish what caused the disruption, who was responsible, or whether data was taken from any system.
What happened in Honeywell’s March 2021 cyber intrusion?
On March 22, 2021, Honeywell said it had detected “a malware intrusion that disrupted a limited number of our information technology systems.” The company’s description identifies IT systems; it does not say that operational technology or production systems were affected. Honeywell said it partnered with Microsoft to assess and remediate the situation. It also said it had secured its systems, identified the point of entry, revoked unauthorized access, and notified law enforcement. The company said its investigation was ongoing.

What did Honeywell mean by “returned to service”?
Honeywell’s exact wording was: “We have returned to service and are firmly focused on running our operations and serving our customers.” The phrase was the company’s description of its status on March 22, 2021—not a current incident update or a detailed account of which services were disrupted and restored.

CyberScoop reported the following day that Honeywell’s statement did not explain how service had been disrupted. The public account reviewed here does not provide further technical detail about the disruption or recovery. CyberScoop’s March 23, 2021 report
Did Honeywell say customer information was stolen?
No. Honeywell said: “Our investigation is ongoing, but at this point, we have not yet identified any evidence that the attacker exfiltrated data from our primary systems that store customer information.” It also said it would contact customers directly if it discovered that customer information had been exfiltrated.

This was a limited statement about what the company had identified at that point, specifically concerning its primary systems that store customer information. It is not proof that no data was accessed or exfiltrated from any system.

The contemporaneous public reporting did not resolve either question. CyberScoop said a Honeywell spokesperson had not immediately answered its questions about whether ransomware was involved or who was responsible. Honeywell’s statement described a malware intrusion but did not name an attacker or identify the malware as ransomware. The available reporting therefore does not support assigning a motive or attributing the incident to a particular actor.

What does the incident tell us about Honeywell’s security posture?
By itself, the March 2021 statement does not establish Honeywell’s present security posture or disclose later investigative findings. Honeywell’s 2020 annual report discussed cyber risks generally, including potential operational interruption, harm to business relationships and reputation, and financial, legal, and remediation costs. It also described company-wide controls such as identity and access controls, data protection, vulnerability assessments, monitoring, and backup systems.
