A 2026 report describes an adult Homo erectus skull fragment, DNH 127, from Drimolen Main Quarry in South Africa, dated to about 2.0 million years old. Set against adult Homo erectus material from Dmanisi in Georgia, dated to about 1.8 million years, that gap is where the headline’s “200,000 years” comes from. The specimen adds to earlier Drimolen evidence for an early Homo erectus presence in southern Africa. It does not mark the first discovery of the species there, and it does not settle where the species originated.
What the 2026 report describes
The material comes from Drimolen Main Quarry, a cave deposit in South Africa that was discovered in 1992 and excavated through 2019. According to the La Trobe University release, carried by ScienceDaily on 8 October 2026, many of the fossils recovered from the quarry had not been formally described before this work.

JIANEEXSQ Real Trilobite Fossil from Hunan of China 450 Million Years Ago for Collections and... | $19.75 | Buy on Amazon |
- Scope: 18 hominin fossils, assigned to Homo erectus and to Paranthropus robustus.
- Key specimen: DNH 127, a newly published adult Homo erectus fossil, reported at about 2.0 million years old.
- Publication: Jesse M. Martin, A. B. Leece, Stephanie Baker, Andy I. R. Herries and David S. Strait, “New hominin cranial and mandibular remains from Drimolen Main Quarry, South Africa,” Annals of Human Biology 53 (1), 2026, DOI 10.1080/03014460.2026.2725046.
Lead author Dr. Jesse Martin is quoted in the release as saying: “This paper publishes a new adult fossil attributed to Homo erectus, DNH 127, providing further confirmation that this species first appeared in southern Africa 2 million years ago.” That is the authors’ interpretation of their own specimen. Public coverage does not give the dating method or an error range for DNH 127, so treat “about 2.0 million years” as an approximate published age.

How the 200,000-year comparison works
The headline subtracts one published age from another. The report sets the roughly 2.0-million-year age of DNH 127 against adult Homo erectus material from Dmanisi, which is about 1.8 million years old. The difference is roughly 200,000 years. It is a comparison between two dated specimens, not a measured change in the species’ range across the continent, and it is framed against the older age assumed for Homo erectus fossils reported from elsewhere.

Where DNH 134 fits
The 2026 find builds on DNH 134, a Homo erectus skull from the same quarry that was reported in 2020. Monash University reported that the skull was reconstructed from more than 150 fragments, in its April 2020 release. The University of Cape Town’s 2020 release presented its age as evidence that Homo erectus existed 100,000–200,000 years earlier than previously thought.
The two specimens differ in more than age. DNH 134 belonged to a child, while DNH 127 is an adult. In 2020, UCT geologists examined small pieces of cave rock (speleothem) under the microscope to judge whether the dated layers were undisturbed. That describes the 2020 dating work. Coverage of the 2026 paper does not describe its dating method in the same way.

The 2026 report also describes Paranthropus robustus from Drimolen, which it places at about 2 million to 1.8 million years ago. The authors describe this species as having larger teeth and stronger chewing muscles, and they contrast it with Homo erectus, which had a larger brain and smaller molars. The report’s suggestion that meat eating may explain these differences is tentative, and it is the authors’ interpretation rather than a finding.

- Supported by the report: an adult Homo erectus specimen, DNH 127, from Drimolen, reported at about 2.0 million years old, which adds to earlier evidence for an early Homo erectus presence in southern Africa.
- Not established here: that this report first discovered Homo erectus at Drimolen or first set the broad early age; the 2020 DNH 134 work already did both.
- Not established by public coverage: a dating method, an error range for DNH 127, or where the species originated.
