Choose Homey Pro (2026) if you want one hub for a wider mix of brands, radio standards, and Homey automations. Choose Aqara Hub M3 if your home centers on Aqara Zigbee devices and you want Aqara local automation, an IR blaster, PoE, and Matter bridging. They can also work together: Aqara’s documentation lists Homey as a Matter ecosystem the M3 can bridge to, though support and available features depend on the exact device.

Homey Pro and Aqara M3 serve different smart-home priorities

These are not equivalent hubs at different prices. Homey Pro (2026) is designed for a broad, multi-brand setup, with a long list of radio technologies and Homey’s Flow and Advanced Flow automation features. Aqara Hub M3 is more focused on Aqara equipment: it acts as an Aqara hub and can bridge supported Aqara Zigbee devices into Matter ecosystems.

The model matters. Homey Pro (2026) is distinct from Homey Pro mini and earlier Pro generations; do not assume those products have identical hardware or radio support. Aqara M3 also differs from the older M2, which is centered on Zigbee and IR rather than M3’s documented Thread and Matter capabilities.

Wired network connection Ethernet requires a separately purchased Homey Ethernet Adapter. PoE port; USB-C power is also available.
Vendor-stated device capacity Not stated on the cited Homey specifications page. Up to 127 Thread/Zigbee devices, according to Aqara’s US product page.
Hardware and storage Quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM, and 8 GB flash storage. 8 GB encrypted local storage.

Protocol support is only a starting point. Check whether the exact device model is supported and which of its features are exposed through the hub or Matter. Homey’s Zigbee guidance names Aqara among brands that use Zigbee, but that does not guarantee support for every Aqara device or feature.

Aqara Smart Home Hub M3 for Advanced Automation, Matter Controller, IR
  • [Multi-Protocol Hub with Matter Bridge] The M3 is a versatile hub supporting Aqara Zigbee and Thread devices. It integrates third-party devices into the Aqara Home app. Supports advanced Matter bridge functionality, enabling Aqara-exclusive scenes and signals to sync with Matter ecosystems such as Home Assistant for seamless integration. Supports up to 127 Aqara Zigbee devices (** Not third-party Zigbee devices) and 127 Thread devices (Repeaters are needed).
  • [Edge Compatibilities and Local Automations] The M3 serves as an Edge Hub, prioritizing local control and automation. Upon integration, it supersedes existing Aqara hubs, shifting the automations among them to local operation (Some cloud-based notifications still require internet). Upgrade-friendly, it supports migrating Zigbee devices from older Aqara hubs.
  • [Smart IR Blaster with Feedback and Learning] The 360°IR blaster not only sends commands but also provides accurate status updates by detecting traditional remote use. It connects IR air conditioning units to Matter, functioning as an AC thermostat when paired with an Aqara Temperature and Humidity Sensor. (Note: Only one AC device can be exposed to Matter. Functionality may vary based on the Matter integration app. For Apple Home exposure, use Matter integration instead of HomeKit.)
  • [Optimal Wired and Wireless Connectivity] Offering both wired and wireless solutions, the smart home hub M3 provides dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) with advanced WPA3 security, and a Power over Ethernet (PoE) port. The addition of a USB-C port allows for mini-UPS and power bank connections, delivering unparalleled stability. (2A USB power adapter is not included. ) . Note: To ensure a stable connection, place the Hub M3 between 6 to 19 feet from the router.
  • [Privacy-Focused with Encrypted Storage, Easy Setup and Versatile Placement] The M3 prioritizes privacy by excluding microphone or camera components. It boasts 8GB end-to-end encrypted local storage, for device lists, configuration parameters, and automation configuration data. Additionally, it includes a mount and screws for flexible placement on flat surfaces, walls, or ceilings. Magic Pair technology ensures effortless detection by the Aqara Home app upon power-up.

Thread has an important Homey Pro caveat: Homey’s support guidance says its Zigbee and Thread networks share hardware, resetting Zigbee also resets Thread, and the hub currently cannot join an existing Thread network. If you already rely on a Thread network from another ecosystem, verify how that limitation affects your planned setup before choosing Homey Pro.

Choose by ecosystem and automation needs

Choose Homey Pro for a mixed-brand system

Homey Pro is the more natural fit when your devices span several brands and you want to bring them into Homey’s platform. Homey lists Advanced Flow, Energy, Dashboards, and Insights among its features. Its official information says Homey Pro is certified as a Matter 1.5 controller, but certification does not mean every capability of every Matter device is supported; Homey publishes supported device types, and the Matter specification continues to evolve.

  • [Local Automation for Reliable Performance] Supports local execution of automations for Zigbee and Matter devices, ensuring smooth operation even without Wi-Fi or cloud access. Enjoy millisecond response times for a more stable and reliable smart home experience. (Some automation, such as cloud push notifications, will still require the cloud connection to be executed.)

Homey’s broad radio list does not establish that every automation runs locally. Confirm the behavior of the specific devices, integrations, and automations you plan to use rather than inferring internet independence from protocol support alone.

Choose Aqara M3 for Aqara devices and bridge features

M3 is a strong fit when Aqara Zigbee devices are the center of the installation. Aqara describes the M3 as a Matter controller and bridge for existing Aqara Zigbee devices, and its developer documentation explicitly lists Homey as a bridge target. That means the hubs need not be an either-or decision: an M3 may make supported Aqara devices available to Homey through Matter.

Moreover, it boasts support for WPA3, bolstering Wi-Fi security and reliability.
  • [RGB Light and Illumination Sensor] The M1S Gen 2 features a built-in RGB light with 18 powerful LEDs and a diffuser. It can function as an alarm, accent, or night light, offering configurable brightness and color. Unlike its predecessor, it includes a fully functional illumination sensor usable in automations via the Aqara Home app. The dimensions of Aqara Hub M1S Gen 2 are ‎‎3.14 x 3.14 x 1.63 inches.

Aqara also describes M3’s Edge Hub features as enabling local automations. Its 360-degree IR blaster supports learning and feedback. Aqara says cloud-based notifications remain available; that is distinct from whether a particular automation itself can run locally. Test the exact behavior you need, especially for notifications and IR-controlled equipment.

Aqara notes that only one IR-controlled air conditioner can be exposed to Matter, and functionality varies by the Matter integration app. Do not assume Matter bridging carries every device feature into Homey or another ecosystem.

Consider M2 only if its narrower feature set is enough

Aqara M2 is a relevant alternative for a Zigbee- and IR-focused Aqara setup. Aqara lists Ethernet, Wi-Fi, a built-in speaker, and support for up to 128 Aqara Zigbee child devices, with repeaters required to reach that stated maximum. M2 is not itself a Wi-Fi router. It does not provide the M3’s documented Thread and Matter capabilities.

Can Homey Pro and Aqara M3 work together?

Yes, Aqara’s developer documentation names Homey among the Matter ecosystems to which M3 can bridge Aqara Zigbee devices. This gives an existing Aqara owner a potential route to Homey automations without replacing every Aqara device or treating the platforms as mutually exclusive.

  1. Identify the exact Aqara device models and the functions you need to use.
  2. Check Homey’s supported device types and Aqara’s M3 Matter-bridge documentation for those models and functions.
  3. Confirm that the intended features are exposed through Matter in the app or ecosystem you plan to use.
  4. Before relying on the arrangement for a critical automation, verify its triggers, actions, and notification behavior in your own setup.

Bridging is not a blanket compatibility guarantee. Matter may expose only some device capabilities, and support can vary by device and integration app.

Which hub should you buy?

  • Pick Homey Pro (2026) if broad radio support, a mixed-brand installation, and Homey’s automation tools are your priorities.
  • Pick Aqara Hub M3 if you are building around Aqara Zigbee devices and value Aqara automation, IR control, PoE, Thread, and Matter bridging.
  • Consider using both if you already own Aqara devices and want to use Homey; verify each device and the features Matter exposes before committing.
  • Consider Aqara M2 only if Zigbee and IR meet your needs and you do not need M3’s documented Thread and Matter capabilities.

This comparison reflects published vendor specifications and documentation, not hands-on reliability or speed testing. For the latest details, consult Homey’s US Homey Pro product page, its model comparison, Zigbee brand guidance, and Matter support information, along with Aqara’s M3 product page, M3 Matter bridge documentation, and M2 product page.
