Healthchecks and Scrutiny cover two different homelab blind spots: Healthchecks can alert when a scheduled job misses its check-in, while Scrutiny displays SMART data reported by supported drives. Use them together if you want visibility into both automation and storage health—but neither guarantees that a backup is recoverable or predicts exactly when a drive will fail.

What each tool monitors

Tool Signal it watches Problem it may reveal Key limitation
Healthchecks A scheduled job’s check-in A backup or file-sync task stops reporting The job must be configured to send a check-in, and a ping does not verify the backup contents. How-To Geek
Scrutiny Drive-reported SMART data and trends Changes in drive-health indicators become visible The host, controller, or enclosure must expose individual drives and their SMART data. How-To Geek

These are complementary monitors, not alternatives in a single best-tool ranking. One asks whether a job reported; the other helps you inspect information drives report about themselves.

Use Healthchecks to notice when a scheduled job goes quiet

Backups, file synchronization, and scheduled updates can stop running without taking a homelab service visibly offline. Healthchecks is designed to surface that kind of silent failure: give a task its unique check-in URL, then have it send a ping when it runs. If no ping arrives within the expected window, the service can alert you that the task may have stopped. How-To Geek

The check-in is evidence that the job reached its reporting step, not proof that its output is correct. A backup process might report completion while producing an incomplete or unusable backup. Pair job monitoring with checks appropriate to your backup system, such as reviewing logs and periodically verifying that you can restore data.

Campanale’s article says Healthchecks can be deployed in Docker and recommends local-only use, with instances on individual machines. It notes that access from outside the home network requires a reverse proxy. Those are the author’s deployment recommendations, not a universal security rule; choose an exposure and access design that fits your network and threat model. How-To Geek

Use Scrutiny to follow drive-reported health data

Scrutiny collects SMART information and presents drive health, temperature, and changes over time. The article highlights power-on hours and reallocated sectors as examples a homelab owner might watch. History can make a changing indicator easier to spot than a one-time reading, but SMART values are signals to investigate—not a dependable countdown to failure or a guarantee that a drive with reassuring readings will keep working. Scrutiny depends on smartctl being able to access drives individually. Before relying on it, check whether your particular RAID controller, DAS, or enclosure passes through SMART information for each drive. If the storage layer hides those readings, Scrutiny cannot display data it cannot access. Compatibility is configuration-dependent; the article does not establish that every RAID or DAS setup works.

The article also mentions InfluxDB for storing data and Grafana as a possible way to graph it. These are described as options, not as a required setup or a verified configuration used by the author. How-To Geek

What monitoring can—and cannot—tell you

  • A missed Healthchecks ping: the job did not report within its expected window. Check the scheduler, job logs, network path, and notification path to find out why.
  • A changing SMART indicator: the drive is reporting information worth investigating. Review the full context and plan maintenance or replacement based on your storage needs; one value alone does not establish an imminent failure date.
  • No alert: this does not prove that the system is healthy. The monitored job may be misconfigured, the drive may not expose SMART data, or the monitoring or alerting path itself may be unavailable.

That last point matters in any monitoring setup. Grafana’s official alerting documentation distinguishes a monitored target being unavailable from an alert query failing to execute; they are different failure cases and need different handling. Its meta-monitoring guidance describes monitoring the monitoring system itself. This is general reliability guidance, not evidence that Campanale used Grafana with either tool. Choose the coverage that matches your blind spot

  • If you worry that a backup or sync task might stop without notice, configure Healthchecks for that job and make sure its check-in occurs at the right point in the process.
  • If you want to inspect drive health trends, use Scrutiny only after confirming that the host can read SMART data from each drive.
  • If you need both kinds of visibility, they address separate risks and can be used together.
  • Keep independent backups and test restores: neither tool replaces them.

Patrick Campanale’s How-To Geek article, published September 10, 2026, frames the tools as practical ways to worry less about silent failures. It does not report a controlled reliability study, measured reduction in failures, or quantified time saved, so the tools should be understood by the signals they expose rather than as a guarantee against data loss.
