Homebase is a workforce app built for businesses that schedule hourly and shift-based staff. It puts schedules, clock-ins, timesheets, team messaging, and payroll work in one system, and that consolidation is its main appeal. The free Basic plan is usable for a small single-location team, but several functions sit behind paid tiers or add-ons, and reporting and payroll flexibility are the areas to check first. This review draws on Homebase’s own product and pricing pages and on user reviews on Capterra. It is not based on hands-on testing.
What Homebase does
Homebase describes itself as a mobile-first app for hourly businesses, including restaurants, retail, beauty and wellness, medical offices, and home services. Its modules cover scheduling, time tracking and time clocks, timesheets, team messaging, payroll, hiring, onboarding, HR, compliance, and operational tools.
According to the vendor, schedules can be shared with the team, and hours recorded at clock-in flow into timesheets and payroll workflows. Employees can clock in from phones, tablets, or POS devices. The official site also describes PIN, photo, GPS, and geofencing verification for clock-ins, which lets an owner restrict where and how staff record their hours.
A tablet is an optional shared clock-in station, not a requirement. A business that already has staff phones can start without buying dedicated hardware.

These are vendor-reported numbers about Homebase’s own customer base. They have not been independently verified, so read them as context about scale rather than proof of how well the product performs for your business.
Homebase pricing
As listed on Homebase’s pricing page on October 7, 2026, the monthly plan prices were:
| Plan | Monthly price (listed October 7, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Basic | $0 |
| Essentials | $30 |
| Plus | $70 |
| All-in-One | $120 |
| Payroll add-on | From $39 plus $6 per paid employee |
Prices can change, and offers may differ by account, so confirm the current figures, billing cadence, and limits at checkout. The official home page describes Basic as free for one location and up to 10 employees, and it advertises a 14-day trial of All-in-One. The pricing listing does not show which plans include the payroll add-on, so ask before assuming it is bundled.
To estimate the payroll cost, multiply the paid headcount by $6 and add $39. For example, 20 paid employees on the add-on would come to $39 + (20 × $6) = $159 per month for the add-on alone, before any plan charge.

Pros and cons
Advantages
- Scheduling, time tracking, team communication, and payroll sit in one product.
- Staff can clock in from phones, tablets, or POS devices, with location-based controls such as geofencing.
- A free Basic tier lets a small single-location team start without a subscription.
- Reviewers frequently describe the app as easy to use and useful for coordinating schedules.
Limitations
- Important functions may require higher plans or add-ons, so “free” does not mean every workflow is included.
- Reviewers report occasional app glitches and syncing delays.
- Reporting and customization are described as limited, particularly advanced reporting.
- Support experiences in reviews are mixed.
- Businesses with specialized payroll needs may find the flexibility lacking, so verify payroll features for your jurisdiction and workforce.
Who Homebase suits
Homebase fits an owner or manager of an hourly team who wants scheduling, clock-ins, time records, messaging, and basic payroll work connected in one place. Businesses with specialized payroll, heavy reporting, or multiple locations should test those specific workflows before committing, because they are the areas where reviewers and the product description give the least assurance.
How to compare Homebase with alternatives
- Scheduling and shift trades: confirm how swaps and schedule changes reach staff.
- Clock-in devices and location controls: check which verification methods your plan includes.
- Payroll capabilities and integrations: Capterra lists integrations with ADP, Gusto, Square, Paychex, and QuickBooks. Confirm each one’s current capabilities directly with the vendor.
- Total price: add employee and location limits and any add-ons, such as the payroll fee above.
- Reporting and customization: compare the reports you need against what your plan provides.
- Support needs: decide how quickly you need help and whether mixed review feedback on support is a concern.
For restaurant operators, 7shifts is a plausible alternative to shortlist. For broader workforce management, Deputy is another option. Comparison coverage names both, but that does not establish that either is the better choice for a particular business.
Verdict
Homebase is a credible shortlist option for a small hourly business that values straightforward scheduling and connected timekeeping, messaging, and payroll. It is harder to recommend without conditions when a business needs specialized payroll controls, deep reporting, or reliable support response times.

Quick Recap
Before you commit, work through three checks:
- Confirm which features your target plan actually includes, not just what the pricing summary lists.
- Calculate the full monthly cost with the payroll add-on, employee count, and any extras.
- Run one real week: build a schedule, have staff clock in on the devices you plan to use, review the timesheet, and push the hours through your payroll provider.
