Home Sweet Home is an optional, branching side quest in The Blood of Dawnwalker that turns a dream about Coen’s family into a punishing loop through grief and guilt. GamesRadar+ Senior Staff Writer Jasmine Gould-Wilson calls it one of the game’s most poetic unions of narrative and level design—but her reluctance to play it again makes sense: its disorienting repetition and difficult fights are part of what gives its emotional ending weight.

What is the Home Sweet Home mission?

Home Sweet Home is an optional mission associated with Xanthe, a long-dead boyaress. In her GamesRadar+ account, Gould-Wilson discovers it while exploring an alchemist’s tower in Svartrau. The quest can be missed if Coen leaves the tower instead of exploring farther; it is not presented as an unavoidable part of the main objective.

The mission shifts from exploration into a dream sequence set in Coen’s family home. His dead family appears alive, but the apparent comfort soon gives way to a rescue attempt as monsters attack. Gould-Wilson’s account describes the sequence and its events as she encountered them in her playthrough; it is not an official quest walkthrough.

Why is it so hard to play?

The dream strips away Coen’s normal equipment and powers, leaving him to fight through repeated monster encounters without the tools he usually relies on. Even after he appears to reach safety at a church, the sequence loops rather than ending cleanly. That repetition, combined with the dream’s confusing logic and difficult fights, is why Gould-Wilson describes the mission as stressful and says she does not want to replay it.

#1 Best Overall
THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER: Day 1 Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Day 1 Edition includes the Base Game Disc, Steelbook, and World Map.
  • Make The Story Your Own - Experience and shape the plot the way you want. Embark on the quest to save your family, or swear revenge on your sire and destroy everyone standing in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Rush in head first or risk taking time to prepare. Go alone or search for friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day And Night - Experience two different gameplay loops, offering distinct abilities to choose from, mysteries to uncover, and varying ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every Action Matters - Every action - and inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family’s days are numbered, and every time you take on a quest, time moves forward, compelling you closer to the end. Choose carefully whom to help and whom to leave behind. You will not have time for everyone. The world waits for no one. And neither does the villain.

The discomfort is not separate from the story. Coen keeps trying to save his family, and the repeated rescue attempt makes that impulse feel less like a heroic victory than a trap he cannot escape. The mission’s structure places the player inside the same cycle of trying again.

What does the well reveal about Coen?

Investigating a well leads Coen into memories that expose his guilt over the childhood death of his younger brother, Alin. The dream’s focus shifts from saving the family as a whole to confronting the loss he has been unable to put aside. When Coen finds Alin in the dream, he can say goodbye; in Gould-Wilson’s account, that farewell ends the sequence and wakes him.

The Blood of Dawnwalker Collector Edition [PS5]
  • Make the story your own - Experience and design the plot the way you want it. Set out to save your family, or swear revenge on your Creator and destroy all who stand in your way. Discover ancient secrets lurking in the valley. Plunge into the action or take time to prepare. Go alone or find friends and forge unlikely alliances.
  • Day and Night - Experience two different gameplay loops with different abilities to choose from, secrets to uncover, and different ways to achieve your goals. Experiment with different approaches and discover how the world reacts to your actions.
  • Every action counts - every action - and every inaction - shapes the world around you. Your family's days are numbered, and every time you take a quest, time progresses and brings you closer to the end. Choose carefully who you help and who you leave behind. You won't have time for all. The world is waiting for no one. And neither does evil.
  • Sword, claws and anger - Defy gravity, become a brutal force of nature and use your supernatural abilities as a vampire. Or raise your sword and use powerful magic to take on your opponents as a human being. Experiment and adapt as your shape changes throughout the day and night; each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
  • Open world full of adventure - venture through the handmade open world and discover everything it has to offer. Stroll through the lush forests, the vast plains, the treacherous swamps and explore the steep mountain peaks and medieval settlements. Explore forgotten ruins, find remains of an ancient civilization, and uncover a truth that might have preferred to remain hidden.

That conclusion gives the difficult stretch a clear emotional purpose. Coen cannot undo what happened, and the dream does not reward him with a simple rescue. Instead, it makes him face the memory he has been avoiding.

Why does the writing work despite the frustration?

Gould-Wilson’s praise is personal, not a universal ranking of the game’s quests. She writes that “Home Sweet Home turned out to be one of the most poetic examples of narrative and level design confluence I’ve ever experienced.” Her point is that the mission’s form carries its character story: its repeated fights and failed escape echo Coen’s savior complex, while its final encounter asks him to stop trying to change the past and meet Alin’s memory directly.

That connection also explains the apparent contradiction in the headline. A mission can be compellingly written and still be unpleasant to repeat. Here, the loop, disorientation, and combat contribute to the emotional pressure, but they are also the parts a player might not want to experience twice. Admiring the design does not mean enjoying every moment of playing it.

Where it fits in the wider game

Tom’s Guide describes The Blood of Dawnwalker as an RPG for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. Its premise gives Coen 30 days and nights to save his family from vampire lord Brencis, with Coen human by day and vampire by night. That larger family-saving objective gives Home Sweet Home a pointed countercurrent: this optional detour is about a loss Coen cannot reverse, rather than another opportunity to save everyone.
