A home security camera is a camera used to monitor a home or its property. Many models let you view live video through an app and may also record footage, but features such as storage, remote access, and audio depend on the specific device and service.
What a home security camera does
A camera gives you a visual view of a place in or around your home. It may be installed indoors or outdoors and used on its own or alongside other security equipment. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes security cameras that stream live video as connected, or IP, cameras; users may view or listen to a feed through an app on a phone or computer. Live viewing and recording are separate capabilities. Some devices preserve recordings in cloud storage or on removable media, while others may offer different options. Check the specific camera and service terms rather than assuming that every camera records or retains footage.
How a camera differs from a home security system
A camera provides visual monitoring. A home security system may combine cameras with other equipment or services, such as alarms, smoke or carbon-monoxide monitoring, emergency notifications, remote controls, backup power, installation, or ongoing monitoring. What to check before choosing one
Features vary by product, so compare the camera’s actual specifications and service terms against where and how you plan to use it.
- Location and coverage: Check whether the device is intended for indoor or outdoor use, what area it can view, and how it will be mounted. Consider whether placement can avoid private spaces.
- Live viewing and recording: Confirm whether live access is available, whether footage can be recorded, and whether viewing works locally, remotely, or both.
- Storage and retention: Find out whether recordings are stored in the cloud or locally, how long they remain available, and what account or service conditions apply.
- Connectivity and power: Check network requirements and what happens if internet or power is interrupted. For a broader system, ask whether backup battery support is included.
- Privacy and security controls: Look for encryption, unique passwords, multi-factor authentication where available, software updates, access permissions, and settings that let you restrict or disable functions you do not need.
- Service obligations: If installation or monitoring is part of an offer, review fees, contract length, cancellation terms, warranty, and who handles repairs.
Resolution, viewing angle, detection features, storage duration, and subscription requirements are product- or service-specific; none is a universal feature of a home security camera.

Privacy and cybersecurity considerations
A connected camera can expose sensitive video or audio if its feed, account, network, or software is poorly secured. The FTC recommends researching security features, using a strong unique password, keeping software updated, securing Wi-Fi, and controlling remote access. Depending on the device, you may be able to disable remote viewing or limit who can access the feed. FTC camera-security guidance
NIST cybersecurity researcher Julie Haney also recommends checking privacy and security features, using multi-factor authentication when offered, avoiding password reuse, reviewing privacy settings, installing updates, disabling unneeded functions, and considering a separate network for smart-home devices. A 2013 FTC case involving certain TRENDnet cameras illustrates the risk of security flaws: the agency said faulty software left some camera feeds open to public viewing.
