Home Assistant sensors can turn a condition you might otherwise miss into a signal an automation can act on. A leak sensor can report water on a surface; a presence sensor can help an automation account for someone sitting still; and temperature and humidity readings can inform a response to a room that is too warm or damp. Each setup depends on compatible devices, the right integration, and a clearly defined action.

How a sensor becomes a useful automation

A sensor provides a value or state. Home Assistant can receive that information as an entity, then use a change or threshold as an automation trigger. The response might be a notification, a device command, or both. Home Assistant notes that sensor entities can come from physical devices, web services, built-in calculations, or custom sensors, so a dedicated gadget is not the only possible data source (Home Assistant’s sensor integration).

Before choosing hardware, define the condition you want to detect and what should happen next. Then verify that the specific device exposes the needed entity or event to your Home Assistant installation. The sensor, integration, automation, and action all have to work together.

1. Detect water before a small leak becomes an unnoticed one

A leak sensor detects water on a surface. Home Assistant’s “Moisture detected” trigger is designed for moisture binary sensors that start detecting water. The official documentation gives placements such as under a sink, behind a dishwasher, next to a washing machine, or in a basement (Moisture detected trigger).

What the automation can do

Home Assistant’s documented example pairs leak detection with closing a water main valve and sending a critical notification. The sensor reports the leak; it does not shut off the water by itself. Automatic shutoff also requires a compatible valve, a working integration, and an automation configured to command that valve. The example does not establish that any particular retail sensor and valve combination is compatible.

A simpler first response is a notification that prompts someone to investigate. If you plan to add automatic shutoff, verify the valve’s compatibility and test the entire sequence so you know what happens when the sensor reports water.

2. Account for someone who is sitting still

Motion sensing and presence sensing describe different jobs. A presence sensor is intended to represent occupancy beyond a momentary movement event. Aqara describes its presence sensing as detecting moving and non-moving people, which supports the category-level use case—not a guarantee of detection in every room or with every setup (Aqara’s sensor categories).

That kind of signal may suit an automation that should reflect whether a room is occupied, rather than whether movement happened recently. Before buying, check the exact model’s Home Assistant compatibility, whether it requires a hub or particular radio, its power needs, placement guidance, and which entity or event it exposes. The cited manufacturer page does not establish compatibility for a specific model.

3. Respond to air that is too damp or too warm

Temperature and humidity sensors provide readings about indoor air. Those readings can inform an automation—for example, a design that notifies you or operates a compatible climate or ventilation control when a chosen condition is met. The sensor supplies information; it does not independently change the room’s temperature or humidity. The exact control device, integration, threshold, and automation depend on your setup.

Do not confuse airborne humidity with surface water. Home Assistant’s moisture integration concerns moisture detection, such as water detected by a leak sensor; humidity describes moisture in the air (Home Assistant’s moisture integration). Aqara lists temperature and humidity sensors among its sensor categories, but the cited page does not verify a particular model’s Home Assistant compatibility.

When an automation does not respond

Check the chain from the sensor to the action instead of assuming the hardware itself is at fault. Home Assistant’s troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting automation traces and checking that referenced entities are still correct (Troubleshooting automations).
