The HOKA Clifton 10 is best suited to everyday, easy, and recovery runs, plus walking: independent reviewers describe a protective, stable ride that feels less lively when you push the pace. Its high cushioning and roomier fit may appeal to runners who want comfort over ground feel, but it is not a universal fit or an especially compelling speed-work shoe.

What kind of running shoe is the Clifton 10?

The Clifton 10 is a neutral road-running daily trainer. RTINGS recommends it most for easy and recovery miles, citing protective cushioning, a wide platform, and a curved heel that helps guide the transition through a stride. HOKA also presents walking as an intended use. These qualities make it a comfort-focused option for routine miles rather than a shoe built around a fast, energetic ride.

That distinction matters: a cushioned shoe can feel protective without feeling springy. RTINGS identifies the Clifton 10’s heavier build and poor energy return as drawbacks for faster workouts. RunRepeat’s lab likewise found lower energy return than its comparison average and noted that the thick cushioning reduces ground feel. If you want a shoe for intervals or a particularly responsive tempo ride, those are meaningful trade-offs.

What changed from the Clifton 9?

HOKA’s New Zealand announcement lists the Clifton 10 at a 42 mm heel stack and 8 mm heel-to-toe drop, versus 32 mm and 5 mm for the Clifton 9. HOKA also describes a double jacquard knit upper, a slightly roomier forefoot, and standard, wide, and extra-wide options. These are manufacturer specifications and descriptions, not independent lab measurements. HOKA’s announcement

Fit observations from RTINGS broadly align with the roomier forefoot description: its testers found more space in the forefoot and heel than in the Clifton 9. They also reported that the Clifton 10 runs noticeably longer than its predecessor. That combination means “roomier” should not be taken to mean “size up”—length and width are separate fit questions, so try your usual size and width where possible.

How does the Clifton 10 fit?

The available evidence points to a more generous forefoot and heel than the Clifton 9, with multiple width options offered by HOKA. iRunFar reviewer Nathan Allen also found the forefoot slightly wider and described a comfortable feel for daily running. Individual foot shape and preferred toe room vary, so those impressions cannot guarantee a fit for every runner. iRunFar’s review

  • Light and plush for everyday miles
  • A trusted trainer for daily maintenance miles, the Clifton has been the keystone of our cushioned styles for 10 years and counting. Ushering in a new era of plush performance, this next-generation update delivers a revitalized underfoot experience with an additional 3mm in heel-to-toe drop. Delivering the same ultralight cushioning that made the Clifton a fan favorite, we’ve fine-tuned the fit and added a breathable jacquard upper with double-lace lock to mitigate tongue migration.

  • Consider standard width if your current road shoes fit comfortably and you do not need extra room.
  • Look at wide or extra-wide if you routinely need more forefoot space; HOKA lists both options alongside standard width.
  • Check length carefully: RTINGS testers found the Clifton 10 noticeably longer than the Clifton 9.

How much does the Clifton 10 weigh, and what is its drop?

Weight figures depend on the source and, for measured weights, the shoe size. HOKA lists 9.8 oz for men and 8.0 oz for women. iRunFar’s reviewer reports 9.8 oz (278 g) for a U.S. men’s size 10. Runner’s World’s search-result summary gives 9.4 oz for men and 7.6 oz for women; its review page was not available to verify further, so treat those figures as a secondary, summary-only data point.

Drop figures also differ by measurement method. HOKA states an 8 mm drop, and iRunFar reports 8 mm. RunRepeat’s lab measured a 12.4 mm drop, with a 44.4 mm heel stack and 32.0 mm forefoot stack, using World Athletics-specified measurement points. RunRepeat says HOKA appears to measure farther back near the midfoot, which likely explains the discrepancy. These are not directly interchangeable measurements; keep the source and method attached to each figure. RunRepeat’s lab review

Is the Clifton 10 a good choice for you?

It may suit you if

  • You want a neutral shoe for regular easy or recovery runs.
  • You prefer substantial cushioning and a stable-feeling platform to a close-to-the-ground ride.
  • You need a roomier fit or want to choose among standard, wide, and extra-wide options.
  • You also want a road shoe that HOKA identifies for walking.

Look elsewhere if

  • Your priority is a lively, high-energy feel for fast workouts.
  • You want strong ground feel; RunRepeat’s lab found that the high, thick setup limits it.
  • You need a fit decision based on a guaranteed size match—the reported length and width impressions are reviewer observations, not a fitting guarantee.

Overall, the evidence supports the Clifton 10 as a protective daily option for relaxed running, not as a one-shoe answer for every pace or foot. RTINGS’ assessment is based on its comparative testing process, while iRunFar’s comfort and fit comments are one reviewer’s experience; neither establishes that every runner will prefer it.
