A hockey goalie (goalkeeper) is responsible for protecting the net and stopping shots. Skaters play as forwards or defensemen, moving the puck and contributing to both offense and defense. The goalie wears specialized protective gear and has distinct privileges and restrictions under NHL rules; those NHL examples are not automatically the rules in youth, amateur, international, or recreational leagues.
What does a goalie do in hockey?
The goalie’s primary job is to prevent the puck from entering their team’s net. They track shots, use their body and equipment to make saves, and can play the puck when the applicable rules allow. A goalie is not simply a stationary blocker: puck handling can help a team manage play, but it is subject to restrictions.
What do skaters do?
Skaters are the players on the ice who are not acting as the goalie. They play as forwards or defensemen. Forwards commonly help carry the puck and create scoring chances; defensemen help prevent the opposing team from scoring and can also move the puck and support attacks. Both roles contribute to offense and defense, rather than dividing neatly into attackers and defenders.
Goalie vs. skater at a glance
| Role | Main job | Equipment | Rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goalie | Protect the net and stop shots; may handle the puck within applicable limits. | Specialized protective equipment, including a mask, leg pads, and chest-and-arm protection. | NHL rules give goalies distinct privileges and restrictions, including rules concerning puck handling. |
| Skater | Play forward or defense, move the puck, and contribute to attack and defense. | Standard player equipment and a player stick; exact requirements depend on the league. | A skater does not gain goalie privileges simply by taking the goalie’s place. Confirm the wording in the applicable rulebook. |
For current NHL rules, the NHL Video Rulebook links to the 2026-27 Official Rules. Its explainers cover goalie interference and handling the puck. A rulebook—not a general description of positions—is the authority for deciding whether a particular play is legal.

What equipment does a hockey goalie wear?
Goalie equipment is designed for the distinct demands of facing shots. Core examples include a protective mask, leg pads, and a chest-and-arm protector. Skaters wear player gear and use a player stick; that is a broad role distinction, not a complete equipment checklist for every league or age group.
Fit and sizing matter
Goalie gear must fit the individual player and satisfy that player’s league rules. NHL equipment regulations specify construction and dimensions; they should not be treated as universal sizing advice. The NHL’s 2024-25 Official Rules, Section 3 – Equipment, for example, says leg pads must be anatomically proportional and size-specific and sets out detailed measurements for that edition. Those measurements are edition-specific, not a current universal standard.

In a 2018 report on NHL/NHLPA chest-and-arm-pad rules, NHL vice president of hockey operations Kay Whitmore described the fit principle: “The chest and arm protector worn by each goalkeeper must be anatomically proportional and size-specific based on the individual physical characteristics of that goalkeeper.” The same report quoted Whitmore: “We’ve tried to remove equipment from areas there’s no body part behind.” It also quoted NHLPA special assistant Mathieu Schneider: “We’re trying to come up with rules and guidelines that don’t give players a distinct advantage because of their equipment.” These statements describe the NHL policy discussed in that report, not a replacement for the rules that apply to a player’s league. NHL rules recognize the goalkeeper as a distinct role, with specific privileges and restrictions. For example, goalkeeper puck handling is subject to limits, and NHL reference material lists penalties for a goalkeeper participating in play beyond the center red line and for playing the puck in a restricted area. These are specific NHL examples, not rules to assume apply in every league.

The NHL’s 2025-26 Official Rules reference tables provide those examples for that edition. Because NHL rule wording can change by season—and the current 2026-27 rulebook is linked from the NHL Video Rulebook page—consult the rulebook for the season in question before relying on a particular restriction. A skater substituted for the goalie does not inherit goalkeeper privileges under the cited 2021-22 NHL wording; check the current rule text for the exact provision.

Use the rulebook for the player’s actual competition: league, age group, and season. NHL rules are useful examples of how goalie and skater roles differ, but local youth, amateur, international, and recreational rules may set different requirements for equipment, puck handling, substitutions, or penalties. For gear, check both fit and any approval or equipment requirements imposed by the league before play.
