HMS Agamemnon arrived at HM Naval Base Clyde on 2 October 2026, marking the sixth Astute-class submarine’s arrival at its home port. The milestone does not mean the boat has entered operational service: the Royal Navy says sea trials and operational preparation will continue before it joins the fleet.

When did HMS Agamemnon arrive at Clyde?

The Royal Navy reported that Agamemnon arrived at HM Naval Base Clyde on 2 October 2026, after leaving BAE Systems’ Barrow shipyard on 25 September to begin sea trials. The Navy described the arrival as taking place exactly 125 years after Holland 1, the Royal Navy’s first submarine, was launched. Royal Navy, 2 October 2026

Is HMS Agamemnon operational now?

No. Reaching its home port is a significant stage in the submarine’s progress, but it is not the same as joining the operational fleet. The Royal Navy says Agamemnon and its crew will continue sea trials and operational preparation before the boat becomes operational. The distinction matters: it has sailed and arrived at Clyde, but the Navy has not described it as operational.

How Agamemnon reached this milestone

  • July 2013: The Royal Navy says the submarine’s keel was laid.
  • 22 September 2025: King Charles III commissioned Agamemnon.
  • 25 September 2026: The submarine sailed from Barrow for sea trials. The Navy reported its displacement as 7,000 tonnes and said construction and testing at Barrow had taken 13 years.
  • 2 October 2026: It arrived at HM Naval Base Clyde, its home port.

The commissioning date and keel-laying milestone are recorded in the Navy’s accounts of the boat’s commissioning and arrival. Royal Navy, 22 September 2025 The sea-trials announcement gives the departure date and reported displacement. Royal Navy, 25 September 2026

Where Agamemnon fits in the Astute class

Agamemnon is the sixth of seven Astute-class submarines. In its 2 October 2026 report, the Royal Navy said the seventh and final boat, HMS Achilles, was under construction. The arrival therefore brings another class member to its home port, while the class’s final submarine remains in the build stage.

What the Royal Navy says the submarine can do

The Royal Navy describes Astute-class boats as nuclear-powered and conventionally armed. Its Agamemnon profile lists covert surveillance and tactical strike among the submarine’s roles, and identifies Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes and Tomahawk Block IV land-attack missiles as weapons. These are the Navy’s published descriptions of the class and vessel, not a claim that Agamemnon has completed trials or is already conducting operational missions. What the Navy said about the arrival

Rear Admiral Andy Perks, Director Submarines, called the arrival “a significant milestone for the Royal Navy.” Agamemnon’s commanding officer, Commander John Gabb, said the crew would get to know the boat over the coming months as it prepared for operations. Commodore Ben Haskins, Commander of the Submarine Flotilla, described the arrival as “the first step” toward the boat delivering operations around the world. Their remarks underline the distinction between reaching Clyde and being ready for operational service. Royal Navy, 2 October 2026
