HMD Global began renaming select Nokia phones under its own brand in May 2024, selling the Nokia XR21 as the HMD XR21 and the Nokia T21 tablet as the HMD T21. The change was primarily a branding and product-line strategy shift, not an immediate end to Nokia devices or a blanket renaming of every Nokia phone.
The headline needs one important correction: the reported change covered two products, and one of them was a tablet. Existing Nokia-branded stock was expected to remain available until retailers sold it through, while HMD developed a separate product identity alongside continuing Nokia-branded devices.
Key takeaways
- The Nokia XR21 was sold as the HMD XR21, while the Nokia T21 tablet was sold as the HMD T21 in the reported May 2024 transition.
- The available evidence describes a branding and model-name change, not a confirmed major hardware redesign or a new XR21 generation.
- HMD announced a multi-brand strategy in February 2024 that included original HMD products, continued Nokia phones, and collaborations with other brands.
- The HMD Pulse, Pulse+, and Pulse Pro were announced on April 24, 2024 as HMD’s first original smartphone collection under the HMD name.
- Existing Nokia XR21 and Nokia T21 owners were not required to replace their devices or receive a software update that changed the Nokia logo to HMD.
What did HMD Global rename?
HMD Global began selling two previously Nokia-branded products with HMD branding: the Nokia XR21 became the HMD XR21, and the Nokia T21 became the HMD T21. The Nokia XR21 is a rugged smartphone; the Nokia T21 is an Android tablet, so the change was broader than the phrase “Nokia phones” suggests.

|---|---|---|---|

The May 15, 2024 report said the renamed products were being sold without the Nokia logo on the rear and that remaining Nokia-branded inventory would continue selling until it was exhausted. The original report on the Nokia XR21 and Nokia T21 rebrand is the source for those specific retail observations.

Did the HMD XR21 receive new hardware?
The HMD XR21 appears to be a continuation or rebrand of the Nokia XR21 rather than a completely new phone. The available coverage identifies branding and naming as the reported changes, but it does not provide a complete region-by-region component comparison proving that every internal part, firmware build, network configuration, or retail bundle was identical.
The original Nokia XR21 launch announcement from May 3, 2023 positioned the device as a rugged smartphone with MIL-STD-810H certification, IP69K protection, a 100% recycled aluminum inner chassis, and a two-day battery claim. The current HMD XR21 product page preserves the same broad rugged positioning and lists MIL-STD-810H certification, IP69K protection, recycled aluminum, and up to two days of battery life based on HMD’s stated real-life usage test.
That evidence supports calling the HMD XR21 a rebrand or relaunch. It does not support calling the HMD XR21 a universally identical device without checking the exact market and model number.
HMD XR21 and Nokia XR21: what can buyers safely assume?
| Question | Safe conclusion | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Is the HMD XR21 a new generation? | No new generation is established by the cited evidence. | Processor, cameras, display, storage, battery, and regional model number |
| Is the design related to the Nokia XR21? | Yes. The product identity and rugged positioning continue from the Nokia XR21. | Official regional specifications and retailer listing |
| Are support terms automatically the same? | No. Support, warranty, and screen-replacement terms can vary by market and purchase date. | Country-specific product and warranty pages |
| Will a Nokia XR21 become an HMD XR21 through an update? | No evidence indicates that an existing device receives a physical or automatic brand conversion. | Device model shown in Settings and the original purchase documentation |
Why was HMD moving beyond the Nokia name?
HMD said in its February 2024 announcement that it was building a multi-brand strategy under the name Human Mobile Devices. The plan included developing original HMD devices, continuing Nokia phones, and working with other brands and partners. HMD’s February 25, 2024 multi-brand announcement describes that direction directly.
A separate HMD identity gives the company room to build recognition around products it owns and develops under the HMD name instead of relying entirely on the licensed Nokia brand. The strategy also allows HMD to keep Nokia products in selected categories while introducing devices with different positioning, price points, designs, or partnerships.
The commercial and licensing logic beyond HMD’s public announcement should not be stated as settled fact. HMD’s announcement supports the multi-brand strategy; it does not by itself prove specific licensing costs, consumer research findings, or Nokia Corporation’s future smartphone plans.
How did the HMD Pulse launch fit into the change?
The HMD Pulse family showed that HMD’s own smartphone brand was becoming a real product line rather than only a replacement label for older Nokia models. On April 24, 2024, HMD announced the HMD Pulse, HMD Pulse+, and HMD Pulse Pro as its first original HMD smartphone collection.

According to HMD’s Pulse launch announcement, the HMD Pulse and Pulse+ were made available online and through Argos from April 24, 2024, while the Pulse Pro was described as coming soon in that announcement. The Pulse range was presented as a budget-oriented, repairability-focused family rather than as a rugged replacement for the XR21.
HMD also said that three out of four devices it sold in Europe in 2024 were expected to be repairable. That was HMD’s company projection, not an independent industry measurement, so it should be treated as a manufacturer claim rather than proof of market leadership.
Was HMD abandoning Nokia phones?
No. HMD was not announcing an immediate or complete shutdown of Nokia-branded phones. HMD’s February 2024 announcement explicitly said consumers would continue to see Nokia phones, and the company also said an iconic Nokia device would return in 2024.
The transition was gradual and selective. HMD could sell some smartphones and tablets under its own name while retaining Nokia branding for other products, especially feature phones and classic-model revivals. The updated Nokia 3210, for example, continued using the Nokia name while adding modern features including 4G connectivity, Bluetooth, a color display, and expandable storage, according to the May 2024 report.

The HMD environmental-profiles catalog listed products such as the HMD XR21 and HMD T21 alongside Nokia-branded smartphones, feature phones, and other devices. That coexistence is why “all Nokia phones became HMD phones” is inaccurate.
What remained Nokia-branded?
The available catalog included Nokia-branded models such as the Nokia G42 5G, Nokia C32, Nokia C22, and Nokia X30 5G, as well as Nokia feature phones and tablets. Product availability was market-specific, and a listing in HMD’s international catalog did not guarantee sales in the United States or another particular country.
The Nokia and HMD names also represented different concepts. HMD Global was the company developing and selling the products, while Nokia Corporation’s name was used under a licensing arrangement for Nokia-branded phones and tablets. The rebrand did not mean Nokia Corporation had returned to making these smartphones.

What happens to existing Nokia XR21 and T21 owners?
Existing Nokia XR21 and Nokia T21 owners do not need to replace their devices because of the branding transition. A physical Nokia logo remains on an already purchased device, and no cited source indicates that a software update changes an existing Nokia product into an HMD product.

- Software updates: Check the model shown in the device settings and use the support page for that exact model and region.
- Warranty: Use the original receipt, seller, and country-specific warranty terms. Warranty rules do not automatically transfer from one market to another.
- Accessories: Match the exact model number. A Nokia XR21 case may fit an HMD XR21 if the chassis is unchanged, but compatibility should be confirmed rather than assumed.
- Replacement parts: Parts and repair listings may be organized by the underlying model, the retail brand, or both.
- Trade-in or replacement: Nothing in the available sources indicates a forced trade-in, replacement, or device conversion.
What support promises applied to the XR21?
Support promises need to be separated by announcement, region, and purchase date. The May 3, 2023 Nokia XR21 launch announcement promised four years of monthly security updates, three years of operating-system upgrades, a three-year warranty, and a one-year screen-replacement guarantee in specified markets. The launch announcement’s regional terms are the appropriate source for those original commitments.
The U.S. HMD XR21 product page lists security updates until August 2027 and states that some benefits, including the three-year warranty and free screen replacement, are geographically limited. Buyers should therefore use the product page and warranty terms for the country where the phone is purchased rather than applying a European promise to a U.S. device or assuming that every HMD XR21 listing has identical coverage.
| Support detail | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|
| Monthly security updates | The Nokia XR21 launch announcement promised four years in specified markets; the HMD XR21 U.S. page lists updates until August 2027. |
| Operating-system upgrades | The Nokia XR21 launch announcement promised three years; verify how the commitment applies to the exact regional product. |
| Warranty | The launch announcement cited a three-year warranty in specified markets; HMD’s current product terms may differ by country. |
| Screen replacement | A one-year guarantee was announced for specified markets; the current HMD page limits relevant benefits geographically. |
What changed before the rebrand?
The May 2024 product renaming followed several visible steps in HMD’s brand transition. On October 3, 2023, HMD announced European manufacturing of 5G smartphones, identified the Nokia XR21 as the first device from that production line, and said an HMD-branded portfolio would arrive alongside continued Nokia devices. HMD’s European manufacturing announcement provides that context.

What should buyers compare before choosing Nokia or HMD branding?
Buyers should compare the underlying model, regional support, warranty, network compatibility, and inventory age rather than choosing solely by the logo on the back.
| Decision factor | Why it matters | Buyer check |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model | The HMD label does not automatically indicate a newer generation. | Compare processor, cameras, display, storage, battery, and model number. |
| Software support | Support commitments can differ by region, announcement, and purchase date. | Check the exact model’s current regional support page. |
| Warranty and repairs | Warranty and screen-replacement benefits may be geographically restricted. | Read the seller’s terms and retain the original receipt. |
| Availability | Nokia-branded and HMD-branded versions may coexist during inventory sell-through. | Check whether the unit is new, refurbished, imported, or carrier-specific. |
| Network compatibility | International and U.S. versions may use different bands or carrier certifications. | Verify the exact regional model against the intended carrier. |
| Accessories | Similar names do not guarantee identical dimensions or camera cutouts. | Buy cases and parts labeled for the exact model. |
The official HMD XR21 product page is the most appropriate starting point for buyers considering the HMD-branded rugged model. Buyers considering remaining Nokia XR21 stock should separately check the seller’s model number, update commitment, warranty start date, and condition. A lower price may reflect clearance or older inventory rather than inferior hardware.

What does the rebrand mean for Nokia and HMD?
HMD Global’s renaming of the Nokia XR21 and Nokia T21 marked a separation between HMD’s own product identity and the licensed Nokia product brand. The HMD Pulse family established a new line of original HMD smartphones, while Nokia phones, feature phones, classic revivals, and existing inventory continued in parts of the portfolio.
The most accurate description is a staged brand transition: HMD was taking greater ownership of its product identity without eliminating Nokia overnight. The XR21 and T21 rebrands were evidence of that direction, not proof that every Nokia device had been renamed or that existing owners needed to upgrade.

Did HMD Global rename every Nokia phone?
No. HMD Global renamed or re-presented select products, including the Nokia XR21 as the HMD XR21 and the Nokia T21 tablet as the HMD T21. Nokia-branded smartphones, feature phones, and classic revivals continued to exist alongside HMD products.
Is the HMD XR21 a new phone or a Nokia XR21 rebrand?
The available evidence points to the HMD XR21 being a continuation or rebrand of the Nokia XR21, not a wholly new generation. Buyers should still compare the exact regional specifications, firmware channel, and model number before purchasing.
Will my Nokia XR21 automatically become an HMD XR21?
No. An existing Nokia XR21 does not receive a physical HMD logo through a software update, and no cited source indicates that owners must replace or trade in the phone. Owners should use the existing model name when checking support and updates.
What was the HMD Pulse series?
The HMD Pulse, Pulse+, and Pulse Pro were announced on April 24, 2024 as HMD’s first original smartphone collection under the HMD name. The Pulse family was part of HMD’s broader move to establish its own brand alongside continued Nokia products.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: HMD Global did not end Nokia phones in May 2024. HMD began moving select products—the Nokia XR21 and Nokia T21—under HMD branding while launching original HMD smartphones and retaining Nokia devices in parts of its portfolio. Treat the HMD XR21 as a reported rebrand or continuation, verify regional support and warranty terms, and do not assume that an existing Nokia device changes identity through software.
