Hitachi Data Instance Director (HDID) v6 was announced in October 2017 as a re-architected release using MongoDB as its underlying database. HDID was enterprise software for data protection and copy management—not a consumer storage product. Hitachi’s current lifecycle matrix names Hitachi Ops Center Protector as the product replacing HDID, but that does not establish the support status or migration requirements for any particular installation.
What was Hitachi Data Instance Director v6?
Hitachi Vantara author Hubert Yoshida wrote in March 2018 that the company had announced HDID v6 the previous October and that it was “re-architected with MongoDB as the underlying database.” The timing was around the launch of Hitachi Vantara, which Hitachi dated to September 19, 2017. Yoshida’s post, “Getting Control of Data Copies” is the company’s retrospective account of the announcement.
Hitachi’s HDID 6.0 open-source software disclosure lists MongoDB legacy C++ driver 1.0.0, Boost 1.55.0, and Curl 7.51.0 among its components. Those entries identify disclosed software components; on their own, they do not describe HDID’s feature set or establish its security posture.
What did HDID do?
Hitachi described HDID broadly as continuous data protection, backup and archiving software for application-server hosts. Its product positioning included storage-based snapshots and clones, as well as remote replication. This is a description of the product’s purpose, not a v6.0 feature-by-feature release specification. The accessible Data Instance Director User’s Guide is older and includes version 5-era guidance, so it should not be treated as a v6.0 release document.

What replaced HDID, and what does that mean for existing installations?
Hitachi’s Product Life-Cycle Matrix, updated August 27, 2026, says “Hitachi Ops Center Protector Replaces HRpM and HDID” and lists Protector as actively being sold. This identifies the named successor in Hitachi’s product lifecycle information; it does not, by itself, determine whether a particular HDID installation remains supported, what its contract covers, or which migration path applies.
For an existing environment, verify these points against the actual installation and applicable Hitachi notices:

- Lifecycle status: Check the product-specific matrix and any relevant product notice.
- Version-specific details: Obtain release notes for the installed version and any proposed target before planning an upgrade or migration.
- Support entitlement: Ask Hitachi or the authorized support provider to confirm coverage under the organization’s contract.
Hitachi’s End-of-Life Policy describes a general commitment to maintain products in substantial conformance with published specifications for five years from withdrawal from sale, except where an announcement or the matrix says otherwise. That general policy does not establish a specific HDID v6.0 end-of-support date; use the product-specific information and confirm the position with Hitachi or the authorized provider.

Hitachi’s Data Instance Director Support Questions (updated 2024) asks, “What version of HDID/HDIM are you running on your master node?” and “What operating system and service pack is being used for the Master/Repository/Source node?” Gather that information alongside the other details needed to describe the incident:

- Installed version, available in Help > About.
- Node names and roles, including master, repository, and source nodes.
- Operating system and service pack for the affected nodes, plus Java versions.
- Whether the problem is reproducible, its category, the protection mechanism involved, and the affected application.
- The exact error message and relevant diagnostic information.
Hitachi’s support article describes collecting diagnostics and uploading them for engineering investigation. Follow the instructions in the support process for the affected installation when gathering or submitting those files.

The available evidence establishes the October 2017 announcement timing, the MongoDB re-architecture statement, HDID’s broad data-protection purpose, and the later lifecycle replacement relationship. It does not establish a detailed v6.0 feature delta, upgrade procedure, operating-system compatibility matrix, or current support promise.

Later-version references must not be read as v6.0 documentation: Hitachi’s VMware article concerns version 6.5, released in May 2018, while a later Oracle reference architecture lists HDID 6.7.0 and 6.7.8. Those references show that later 6.x releases existed, but do not prove that their capabilities or compatibility applied to v6.0.
