Apple sagt, dass es das Scharnier des iPhone Duo so abgestimmt hat, dass es sich beim Öffnen und Schließen fest anfühlt und das Gerät auch in Zwischenstellungen zuverlässig hält. Eine matte, austauschbare Display-Abdeckschicht soll zudem helfen, Veränderungen der Oberfläche und die sichtbare Falte weniger auffällig zu machen. Wie genau das Scharnier konstruiert ist und wie sich Falte und Mechanik langfristig verhalten, ist durch die verfügbaren Berichte jedoch nicht unabhängig belegt.
Wie Apple das Scharnier abgestimmt hat
Tom Marieb, Apples Vizepräsident für Hardware Engineering, sagte in einem am 18. September 2026 veröffentlichten TechRadar-Interview, Apple habe intensiv am Drehmomentprofil des Scharniers gearbeitet. Ziel sei ein solides Gefühl an den Endpunkten und kontrollierter Halt unterwegs gewesen – nicht ein Scharnier, das sich in teilweise geöffneten Positionen locker anfühlt.
Marieb beschrieb die Arbeit so: „We really worked on the torque profile very heavily, and that means changing a lot of the mechanical properties of the hinge to have it feel solid, like a high-end automobile’s car door, when you shut it.“ Für Zwischenstellungen ergänzte er, Apple habe sich gefragt, ob Menschen mit dem Gerät interagieren könnten, ohne dass es sich „floppy“ anfühle. Was die Zwischenstellungen ermöglichen sollen
Der Bericht nennt zwei vorgesehene Ausrichtungen. Im halb gefalteten „Seated“-Modus können Inhalte und Bedienelemente auf den beiden Gerätehälften liegen. Im „Standing“-Modus kann das Duo beispielsweise als Nachttischuhr oder Fotodisplay aufgestellt werden. Laut Interview bleibt das Gerät in diesen Positionen stehen; unabhängige Langzeittests dazu werden nicht berichtet.

Wie die matte Oberfläche die Falte weniger sichtbar machen soll
Marieb zufolge besitzt das Duo ein 7,6-Zoll-Nano-Texture-Display. Apple habe sich auch deshalb für eine matte Oberfläche entschieden, weil Glanz kleine Unterschiede in der Oberflächentopografie deutlicher erkennen lasse. Mattierung könne solche Veränderungen weniger auffällig machen und zugleich Reflexionen reduzieren. Marieb nannte die matte Oberfläche „part of that equation“.
Das ist Apples Begründung für die Material- und Oberflächenwahl, kein Beleg dafür, dass die Falte unsichtbar bleibt oder sich mit der Zeit nicht verändert. Wie deutlich sie wahrgenommen wird, lässt sich aus dem Interview allein nicht verlässlich für unterschiedliche Beleuchtung, Blickwinkel oder Nutzungsdauer ableiten. Die Display-Abdeckschicht soll austauschbar sein
In einem am 1. Oktober 2026 veröffentlichten Bericht von Tom’s Guide sagte Kate Bergeron, ebenfalls Apples Vizepräsidentin für Hardware Engineering, die Abdeckschicht sei austauschbar. Sie erklärte: „It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one.“ Der Bericht stellt dies als von Apple entwickelte Schicht für längere Nutzung dar. Tom’s Guide zufolge zeigte eine von YouTuber Quinn Nelson entdeckte AppleCare-Serviceauflistung 19 US-Dollar für die Abdeckschicht und 99 US-Dollar bei Schäden am inneren Display. Das sind eng zugeordnete Beträge aus einer von einem Dritten beobachteten Serviceauflistung, keine allgemeingültigen Verkaufspreise oder bestätigte Kosten für jede Region und jeden Reparaturfall. Was über Apples tatsächliche Scharnierkonstruktion offenbleibt
Die Aussagen von Marieb erklären, welches Bewegungsgefühl Apple anstrebt; sie legen den inneren Aufbau nicht offen. Die verfügbaren Berichte belegen weder die genaue Scharnierarchitektur noch Materialien, Zulieferer oder eine Zyklenfestigkeit. Auch unabhängig gemessene Langzeitergebnisse zur Falte sind darin nicht enthalten.
Apple hat in früheren Patenten verschiedene Lösungen für flexible Displays und Scharniere beschrieben. Ein von MacRumors behandeltes Patent aus dem Jahr 2020 zeigt bewegliche Klappen, die beim Öffnen einen Spalt überbrücken und sich beim Falten zurückziehen könnten, um dem gebogenen Display Platz zu lassen. Das ist historischer Kontext zu einem Problem, mit dem sich Apple beschäftigt hat – kein Nachweis, dass dieses System im iPhone Duo steckt.
