High-resolution audio, usually shortened to hi-res, is a digital format whose sample rate, bit depth, or both exceed the CD standard of 44.1 kHz and 16-bit PCM. That is the common-usage answer. No single threshold is applied identically by every standards body or for every purpose, and a file’s stated specifications do not on their own prove how good the original recording or master is.

Why CD is the reference point

CD audio is uncompressed PCM at 44.1 kHz and 16 bits. The Audio Engineering Society (AES) uses that figure as the comparison point: a digital format that exceeds either the CD sample rate or the CD bit depth is described as high-resolution in common usage. The word “exceeds” matters. CD is the baseline for measurement, not a label for poor quality, and a higher number is a delivery specification rather than a verdict on sound. The AES explicitly treats these figures as delivery modes and notes that the signal, the processing chain, and listener perception are part of the wider discussion that the numbers do not settle.

How the main definitions differ

Four sources are commonly cited, and they answer different questions. Keep them separate before you compare a label against a threshold.

Library of Congress, “Recommended Formats Statement – Audio Works” Preservation recommendation 96 kHz/24-bit PCM or higher, or DSD at 2.8 MHz or higher, when produced alongside CD Recommendation for archival final releases, not a consumer definition
Sound & Vision, on a 2014 music-industry definition Industry definition reported June 12, 2014 “Lossless audio that is capable of reproducing the full range of sound from recordings that have been mastered from better than CD quality music sources” A 2014 definition; it describes sources, not any particular catalog listing

The AES definition is the broadest and the simplest: any digital format above the CD figures for sample rate or bit depth is high-resolution in common usage. It is a description of how the term is used, not a certification scheme.

Japan Audio Society logo criteria

The Japan Audio Society (JAS) generally follows JEITA guidance and gives worked examples for applying the CD comparison. Its logos are different from a definition. The equipment logo requires analog frequency performance, 96 kHz/24-bit recording, playback and conversion capability, and a listening assessment. A separate wireless logo adds wireless conditions, and JAS warns that wireless performance can vary with environment and use. A logo therefore tells you that a device met a stated set of criteria, not that a file has a particular quality.

Library of Congress preservation guidance

The Library of Congress recommends, for final high-resolution audio files produced alongside a CD, either 96 kHz/24-bit PCM or higher, or DSD at 2.8 MHz or higher. It also prefers a final release over a pre-production version and a native-resolution file over an upsampled one. These are archival preferences for preserving recordings, so they set a stricter practical bar for keeping masters than the AES definition does for labeling.

The 2014 industry definition

Sound & Vision reported on June 12, 2014 that the Digital Entertainment Group worked with the Consumer Electronics Association and The Recording Academy, alongside Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group, to define high-resolution audio. The report also describes voluntary master-quality source descriptors such as PCM, analog, CD, and DSD/DSF. It is a definition from over a decade ago. It tells you what the industry set out to mean, but it does not confirm that any current album or streaming listing meets it.

Reading a specification: the worked examples

The JAS examples show how the CD comparison works in practice. Increasing one axis does not automatically qualify a format if the other falls below the CD reference.

  • The self-developed DAPS digital audio purification system, coupled with a fifth-generation FPGA and custom dual femtosecond crystal oscillators, ensures that both local playback on third-party music apps like FiiO Music and Apple Music, as well as output to an external USB DAC, maintain the original audio sampling rate. This guarantees lossless audio quality for a pristine listening experience.
Sample rate and bit depth Counts as high-resolution under the JAS examples?
44.1 kHz/16-bit (CD) Reference baseline, not high-resolution
44.1 kHz/24-bit Yes
96 kHz/16-bit Yes
96 kHz/12-bit No
32 kHz/24-bit No

So a file labelled “24-bit” is not automatically hi-res. A 24-bit file at 44.1 kHz qualifies under these examples, but the sample rate and bit depth must be read together, and a file at 96 kHz with a low bit depth can fall outside the definition.

Formats: PCM, DSD, and what lossless means

High-resolution audio is a property of the specification, not of the file extension. WAV, FLAC, and DSD can all carry high-resolution content.

  • Versatile Ports, High-Performance Output: Supports dual 3.5mm + 4.4mm headphone/LO outputs, equipped with independent line amplification circuits. Also supports SPDIF and USB Audio output, with SPDIF performance rivaling professional digital transports—reducing jitter by 70%.
  • PCM is described by sample rate in kHz and bit depth. The Library of Congress names PCM at 96/24 up to 384 kHz as examples for final release files, and prefers WAV with embedded metadata in its preservation ordering.
  • DSD is a different encoding, and its threshold is expressed in MHz. The Library of Congress gives 2.8 MHz as its minimum preferred DSD figure. Do not compare 2.8 MHz directly with a PCM kHz/bit-depth pair as if they measured the same thing.
  • Lossless versus uncompressed are different properties. The Library of Congress prefers uncompressed files in one part of its ordering, but it also treats a lossless scheme as preferable to a lossy one for acceptable compressed options. A file does not have to be uncompressed to be high-resolution. What the 2014 industry definition requires is lossless audio, which FLAC can provide.
  • Lossy formats such as MP3 or AAC do not fit the lossless requirement of the 2014 definition, regardless of how many kHz they claim.

Native resolution versus upsampling

A file’s metadata cannot tell you where the audio came from. A file saved at 96 kHz may have been recorded at that rate, or it may have been converted up from a 44.1 kHz master. The Library of Congress explicitly prefers native-resolution files over upsampled ones, which is the preservation principle behind the question “is high-resolution audio just upsampled?” The honest answer is that a format label cannot settle it. Provenance has to come from release notes, the label or producer’s statement, or the recording’s documented master.

What you need to play it

High-resolution audio is a property of the recording and file, so you do not need new equipment to own or understand it. Playback is a separate link in the chain. JAS’s equipment logo criteria include 96 kHz/24-bit digital signal handling and conversion, which means a player or digital-to-analog converter (DAC) must accept and convert that format. A USB DAC is one way to add that capability to a computer. The criteria do not validate any particular model, and an existing device may already handle these formats. Check the device’s stated sample-rate and bit-depth support before buying anything.

A practical check for any “hi-res” label

  1. Read the stated sample rate and bit depth together. Compare them with 44.1 kHz/16-bit, and apply the JAS examples if you need a worked rule.
  2. Identify the encoding. A PCM figure in kHz and bits, or a DSD figure in MHz, measures different things.
  3. Confirm the codec is lossless if the definition you are using requires it. A lossy file with a high number does not meet the 2014 industry definition.
  4. Look for a statement of native resolution or master provenance in the release notes. Do not infer it from the file name, the extension, or a streaming badge.
  5. If you need to play the file, check the device’s stated support for that sample rate and bit depth.

Scope of these definitions

These definitions describe common usage, a specific logo program, an archival recommendation, and a 2014 industry statement. Each is accurate for its own purpose. The sources do not provide market statistics or listening-test results that would show how much a listener can hear at a given specification, so claims about audible differences should be treated as separate from the definition.

The Bottom Line

A genuine high-resolution source is a lossless digital format that exceeds CD in sample rate or bit depth in a way that meets the definition you are applying, and whose master is documented as native rather than upsampled. A large number on its own is not enough.
