High-bandwidth memory (HBM) is a specialized form of DRAM built by stacking memory dies vertically and connecting them through the stack. Its many parallel connections create a wide path for data, delivering high throughput in a compact package. HBM is used alongside compatible processors in systems such as AI accelerators and high-performance computing platforms; it is not a replacement for all system memory.
How HBM is built
HBM stacks DRAM dies above an optional base die. Through-silicon vias (TSVs) carry electrical connections through the silicon layers, while microbumps connect the dies. This arrangement lets the memory communicate with a processor over a very wide interface. Micron describes the resulting design as a way to provide high throughput in a smaller physical footprint. Micron’s HBM FAQ
Rather than depending only on a narrower interface operating at high clock speeds, HBM uses many parallel connections. The exact implementation varies by generation and product. The short connections and physical proximity to the processor are also part of why manufacturers design HBM for high bandwidth and energy efficiency; efficiency comparisons should be understood as vendor claims unless independently tested for a particular system and workload.

Bandwidth is not capacity
Capacity is how much data memory can hold. Bandwidth is how much data can move between memory and the processor per unit of time. A system may need both ample capacity and high bandwidth, but one does not tell you the other.

For example, Micron’s HBM4 FAQ describes a 36 GB, 12-high configuration and explains bandwidth as the amount of data that can flow per second. That example illustrates the distinction; it is not a universal HBM specification. Micron HBM4 FAQ
What the published specifications mean
HBM figures need to be read with their generation, vendor, configuration, units, and measurement basis attached. These manufacturer examples are not independent, directly comparable measurements across the entire HBM market:
| Generation and source | Published specification | Configuration or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| HBM3E — Micron | Over 1.2 TB/s per placement; 24 GB or 36 GB capacity | Micron lists 8-high and 12-high configurations, respectively. Product specifications |
| HBM4 — Micron | Over 2.8 TB/s per stack | Micron states a 2,048-pin interface for its product. Product specifications |
| HBM4 — Samsung Semiconductor | Up to 3,300 GB/s per stack; 36 GB | Samsung’s listed 12-high product. HBM family specifications |
Samsung’s units of 3,300 GB/s and 3.3 TB/s express the same nominal throughput. Its newsroom reported mass production and commercial shipments of HBM4 beginning March 13, 2026, and stated up to 3.3 TB/s per stack. That is a dated company announcement, not a guarantee of availability in every market or system. Samsung newsroom, March 13, 2026

How HBM relates to DDR and LPDDR
HBM is not a drop-in DDR memory module. It is packaged as part of a compatible compute system, so it requires a suitable processor and package. A system can use HBM and conventional memory together: Micron describes modern systems in which CPUs use DDR5 or LPDDR5 while a GPU uses HBM. Micron HBM4 FAQ
The practical distinction is architectural: DDR5 typically uses a narrower bus at high clock speeds, while HBM emphasizes a wide, parallel interface. Those are broad design tendencies, not a complete performance comparison for every product or workload. Micron’s HBM FAQ

Where HBM is used
Manufacturers position HBM for demanding, data-intensive systems, including AI training and inference, scientific computing, modeling and simulation, analytics, cloud infrastructure, supercomputing, and enterprise data centers. Micron and Samsung both describe AI and high-performance computing as target contexts. Micron HBM overview Samsung HBM family
HBM can help move data quickly, but it does not by itself determine system performance. The processor, memory capacity, software, workload, and overall system design also matter.
Quick Recap
What to check when evaluating an HBM system
- Capacity: whether the stack can hold the data the workload needs.
- Bandwidth: the stated throughput, including its units and measurement basis.
- Configuration: stack height and other disclosed product details.
- Compatibility: support in the processor and package; HBM is not a consumer-upgrade memory stick.
- Power and thermals: the vendor’s stated conditions and comparison baseline, if claims are provided.
