Hideaki Nishino became President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the company behind PlayStation, on April 1, 2025. His appointment replaced the previous split leadership arrangement with one chief executive for SIE, while Hermen Hulst continued leading the Studio Business Group and reporting to Nishino.
Who is the new PlayStation CEO?
Hideaki Nishino is the President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony Group Corporation and SIE announced his appointment on January 29, 2025, with an effective date of April 1, 2025. Sony’s own PlayStation timeline records the same appointment date.
Nishino’s career at PlayStation has centered on platform technology, products, services and user experience rather than solely on game development. Before taking charge of SIE, he was appointed CEO of SIE’s Platform Business Group effective June 1, 2024.

What changed when Nishino took over?
The main change was organizational: SIE moved from a split top-leadership model to a single SIE CEO structure. Nishino now sits at the top of the company that runs the PlayStation business, with a dedicated studio chief operating within that structure.
| Area | Leader and remit after April 1, 2025 |
|---|---|
| Sony Interactive Entertainment overall | Hideaki Nishino, President and CEO |
| Platform and technology direction | Nishino’s background and remit, covering products, services, technology and user experience |
| First-party studios and publishing | Hermen Hulst, CEO of the Studio Business Group, reporting to Nishino |
This arrangement keeps platform execution and first-party content leadership distinct, but places both under one SIE reporting line. It does not, by itself, announce a specific console, game, pricing policy or release schedule.

What does the PlayStation CEO control?
As SIE President and CEO, Nishino oversees the business responsible for PlayStation. The announced structure and his previous platform assignment point to several major areas of responsibility:
- Platform technology: the technical foundation supporting PlayStation hardware and services.
- Products and devices: product direction associated with the PlayStation platform, including the experience around PS5 and PlayStation VR2.
- Services and network experience: PlayStation Network and related user-facing services.
- Platform user experience: how players discover, access and use PlayStation features and services.
- Company-wide SIE coordination: aligning platform operations with the studio business led by Hulst.
Hulst remains responsible for first-party development, publishing and the Studio Business Group’s business operations. His continued role means Nishino’s appointment did not eliminate a separate executive focus on games and studios.

- expanding the use of Sony and PlayStation intellectual property; and
- combining platform capabilities with creative content.
These are strategic themes, not guarantees of particular products or launches. The appointment announcement does not promise a named game, hardware revision, service change or release date.

From April 1, 2025, Nishino became the single President and CEO of SIE. Hulst continued as Studio Business Group CEO but reported to Nishino, creating a unified executive structure without merging the platform and studio responsibilities into one operating job.

What the appointment does—and does not—tell PlayStation users
What it establishes
- SIE has one overall CEO: Hideaki Nishino.
- The change took effect on April 1, 2025.
- Hermen Hulst remains the senior executive for the Studio Business Group and reports to Nishino.
- Platform technology, products, services and user experience are central to Nishino’s experience and remit.
What it does not establish
- It does not confirm a new PlayStation console or accessory.
- It does not announce a specific first-party game or publishing timetable.
- It does not state that PlayStation Network, PlayStation Plus or PlayStation Store policies will change.
- It does not provide a new sales or market-performance figure tied to the appointment.
Why the change matters for Sony’s PlayStation strategy
Putting the overall SIE role under Nishino gives Sony a single executive accountable for the relationship between platform technology and first-party content. His platform background places products, services and player experience at the center of that coordination, while Hulst’s continuing role preserves specialized leadership for studios and publishing.
The practical impact will depend on decisions Sony makes after the appointment. The announced information supports an interpretation about governance and strategic emphasis, not a prediction about particular hardware, games or commercial results.
