If you want to remove similar photos, choose a workflow that matches where your pictures live: use Apple Photos’ built-in duplicate merging for duplicates it identifies, Google Photos’ review flow for its iOS storage-cleanup use case, HEVCut for vendor-described near-duplicate grouping on Apple devices, or PhotoSweeper to compare Mac libraries and folders. The available product descriptions do not establish which tool is most accurate, so review the images and confirm selections before deleting.

Which HEVCut alternative fits your photo library?

Option Where it applies What it says it finds Review and cleanup
Apple Photos iPhone Photos library Duplicates shown in the Duplicates collection; Apple’s guide does not describe broad near-duplicate culling. Select duplicates and choose Merge.
HEVCut iPhone, iPad, and Mac, according to the product site Exact copies and visually similar groups, such as bursts, edited images, and screenshots of the same content; these are vendor claims. Groups results, suggests a keeper, and says you can compare images and change the selection before deletion.
Google Photos iPhone and iPad, in the documented out-of-storage cleanup flow Groups similar photos for review in that storage context. May preselect items while keeping a best shot; you can change selections before moving items to trash.
PhotoSweeper Mac; its listing names Photos, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, and folders Exact duplicates and similar-looking photos, according to its listing. Lists side-by-side comparisons, adjustable matching, automatic marking rules, and review before cleanup.

Feature descriptions are not a shared accuracy or safety test. Pick based on your platform, photo library, match type, and the deletion behavior you are comfortable with.

Use Apple Photos for duplicates it identifies

On iPhone, open Photos > Collections > Utilities > Duplicates. Select items and choose Merge. Apple says the Duplicates collection does not appear when Photos has not identified duplicates. Its instructions cover duplicate merging, not a general promise to find every burst shot, retake, or lightly edited image. See Apple’s instructions for merging duplicate photos and videos.

Consider HEVCut when you want near-duplicate groups

HEVCut describes its finder as detecting exact copies and visually similar images, including bursts, edited versions, and screenshots of the same content. The company says it uses file hashing for exact matches and visual fingerprinting based on LSH and Hamming distance for near-duplicates. It also says the results are grouped, a keeper is suggested, and users can compare images and override that suggestion before confirming deletion. These are the vendor’s descriptions, not independently verified performance or safety findings. Details are on HEVCut’s duplicate finder page.

Use Google Photos’ similar-photo flow for its storage cleanup

Google’s iPhone and iPad help page describes a similar-photo review page offered when a user is out of storage. It says Google Photos can group similar photos, automatically select items for deletion while keeping a best shot, allow changes to the selections, and move chosen items to trash. This is specifically documented as a storage-cleanup flow, not as a general-purpose duplicate finder. Before removing anything, check whether the photos are backed up and which Google account and library the workflow affects. Follow Google’s iOS and iPadOS space-freeing instructions.

  • Support for Internal & External Storage: You can remove duplicates from your device’s internal and external SD card (if attached).
  • Categorized Duplicates: After scan, duplicate photos are categorized in groups for easy viewing, allowing you to effortlessly delete the ones you don’t need.

Choose PhotoSweeper for Mac-based library comparison

PhotoSweeper’s Mac App Store listing describes exact-duplicate and similar-looking-photo matching across Apple Photos, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, and folders. It lists side-by-side comparisons, adjustable matching, automatic marking rules, and user review before cleanup. That makes it relevant if your pictures are spread across Mac libraries or directories rather than only an iPhone camera roll. The listing describes features; it does not establish comparative performance. See the PhotoSweeper App Store listing.

Review similar photos without losing the shot you want

  1. Start in the library you intend to clean. Apple Photos, Google Photos, and Mac library tools act in different contexts; confirm the account or library shown in the app.
  2. Check a group before selecting a keeper or deletion. Similar-looking frames can differ in focus, expression, crop, or detail. Compare the full-resolution versions when the app offers that option.
  3. Confirm the deletion destination and sync implications. Apple describes merging duplicates; Google describes moving selected items to trash. Check the current app’s cleanup behavior and recovery options before a large removal.
  4. Begin with a small selection. Review the result in the app and verify the images you meant to retain before continuing with more groups.

No cited source provides a common benchmark or independent head-to-head test of matching accuracy. The choice should therefore rest on platform fit and the controls each workflow documents, not an assumed accuracy ranking.
