Neither Hetzner nor OVHcloud wins across the board. Official documentation settles specific differences in public IPv4 pricing, how outbound traffic is allowed and billed, regional network zones, and DDoS terms. It does not settle which provider is cheaper or faster for a given workload. Matched plan prices, independent benchmarks, latency, uptime and support quality are not established by the official material. The provider that wins for you is the one whose matched plan, in your target region, with your traffic and IP needs, costs less and performs acceptably in a test you run yourself.
What official sources can and cannot settle
Provider documentation is good at answering contract-level questions: what is included, what is billed separately, and where a service runs. It is not good at answering “which is faster” or “which is cheaper overall,” because those depend on the exact plan you pick and the workload you run.
- Settled by official sources: the resource types each provider offers, the IPv4 and IPv6 pricing lines, the traffic allowances and exceptions, the regional zones named in documentation, and the DDoS protection terms.
- Not settled by official sources: matched plan prices for the same specification, CPU or memory performance, network latency from your users, uptime, and support quality.
The comparison below stays within that line. Where one provider publishes a figure and the other does not, the table says so instead of filling the gap.

Hetzner describes its cloud servers as virtual machines and offers shared-resource and dedicated-resource types. OVHcloud’s 2025 SOC 3 report describes a wider catalogue: bare metal, VPS, Public Cloud, Hosted Private Cloud and Managed Kubernetes. A shared-CPU Hetzner server and a bare-metal OVHcloud machine are different products, so a price or performance comparison between them tells you little.

Region and network zones
Hetzner’s location documentation names physical locations in Europe, the United States and Singapore, and it prices those network zones differently. Traffic that crosses zones is billed as normal internet traffic. That page was last revised in 2021, so confirm the current zone list in Hetzner’s documentation before you commit to a region.

OVHcloud’s 2025 SOC 3 report gives company-wide figures: 43 data centers across four continents, 100 Tbps of global network capacity, 44 redundant Points of Presence, and 16 Local Zones. These are company-reported numbers. They describe OVHcloud’s footprint, not whether a particular Public Cloud service is available in the region you need, so check that service’s region list separately. Hetzner’s official material used here does not publish a comparable footprint figure, so the two cannot be ranked on scale.
Public IP addresses: the cost most comparisons skip
Hetzner does not include public IP addresses by default. OVHcloud’s price page lists a public IPv4 separately. Add the IP line to every estimate, because it multiplies with the number of addresses you need.

| Item | Hetzner | OVHcloud |
|---|---|---|
| Public IPv4 price | €0.50/month excluding VAT for a Primary IPv4 (Hetzner documentation) | $0.00319/hour, approximately $2.3287/month excluding VAT (OVHcloud Public Cloud price page; prices change, so check the live page) |
| Public IPv6 | Free for Primary IPv6 addresses (Hetzner documentation) | Not stated on the price page used here |
| Currency and billing unit | Euro, monthly | US dollar, hourly with a monthly approximation |
These two IPv4 figures cannot be compared directly. They use different currencies, different billing units and different VAT treatment. Normalise all of them to one currency, one billing period and your own VAT and account location before you decide.
Traffic: included allowances and regional exceptions
Headline instance prices hide traffic costs, which can dominate a monthly bill for content-heavy or API-heavy services. OVHcloud states that inbound Public Cloud traffic is included, and outbound traffic is included everywhere except Singapore, Sydney and Mumbai. In those three locations, each Public Cloud project gets 1 TB per month before overage charges apply.

| Traffic element | Hetzner | OVHcloud |
|---|---|---|
| Inbound traffic | Not stated in the Hetzner location documentation used here | Included |
| Outbound traffic, standard regions | Priced by network zone; no included allowance stated in that documentation | Included |
| Outbound traffic, Singapore, Sydney, Mumbai | Singapore is a separately priced zone; no allowance stated in that documentation | 1 TB per month per Public Cloud project, then overage charges (OVHcloud) |
| Traffic between zones | Billed as normal internet traffic (Hetzner documentation) | Not stated |
If your users sit in Asia-Pacific, OVHcloud’s per-project allowance is a concrete benefit to model. If your architecture moves data between Hetzner zones, that movement carries a cost that a single-zone estimate would miss.

OVHcloud states that standard DDoS protection is included in all Public Cloud products. Its guide explains how mitigation works in practice. An attack can trigger an email notification and reroute traffic through its Anti-DDoS infrastructure, and the control dashboard shows scrubbing and mitigation information. Some attack types may not be detected and cleaned automatically. In those cases OVHcloud recommends server-level firewall rules and edge firewall rules.

Treat this as documented mitigation behaviour, not an availability guarantee. Hetzner’s official material used for this comparison does not describe an equivalent default protection, so do not assume parity. Check Hetzner’s current security documentation directly if DDoS handling is a requirement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Scale and company structure
OVHcloud’s 2025 SOC 3 report describes its operating model in these words: “OVHcloud is vertically integrated: OVHcloud builds their own data centers and servers, owns and operates their own network, and are responsible for the maintenance and support for their customers.” This is OVHcloud’s own description of itself. It is useful for understanding how the company is organised, but it is not an independent measure of reliability, and it does not show how Hetzner is organised in the same terms.
How to run the comparison that decides it
- Write the workload profile. Record vCPU count, memory, storage size, expected monthly outbound traffic, number of public IPv4 addresses, and the regions where users and data must be located.
- Match the resource model. Choose shared or dedicated CPU, and VPS, Public Cloud, bare metal or managed services, so both sides offer the same kind of machine.
- Pick a matched plan in each provider’s current price list. Use the same region and the same specification. Record the plan name and the price page date.
- Add public IPv4 costs. Multiply the per-address price by the number of addresses. Hetzner lists €0.50/month excluding VAT for a Primary IPv4. OVHcloud lists approximately $2.3287/month excluding VAT for its IPv4.
- Add traffic. Estimate monthly outbound volume and cross-zone movement. For OVHcloud in Singapore, Sydney or Mumbai, subtract the 1 TB per project allowance before pricing overage. For Hetzner, price outbound traffic according to its zone rules.
- Normalise the totals. Convert both to one currency, one billing period, and your own VAT treatment, because the two providers publish in euros and US dollars and bill on different units.
- Test your own workload. Deploy the same application to both matched plans, then measure response times from where your users are, load behaviour under your traffic pattern, and how each provider’s support responds to a real ticket. No official source in this comparison establishes these results.
- Set your protection requirements. If you need documented DDoS mitigation behaviour, use OVHcloud’s documentation as the baseline and add your own firewall rules. Confirm Hetzner’s current protection terms separately.
The total after step 6 is the number that matters for cost. The results of step 7 decide performance. Step 8 decides whether the platform meets your risk requirements. Only the provider that passes all three for your workload is the one that wins for you.
