Herzog Zwei is best understood as an early real-time strategy (RTS) pioneer—not the genre’s uncontested sole inventor. Its distinctive idea was to combine base capture, resource gathering, and unit production with direct control of a transforming aircraft and robot. That blend anticipated recognizable RTS conventions before the genre became widely named and popularized.

What is Herzog Zwei?

Herzog Zwei is a strategy game associated with Technosoft and the Mega Drive/Genesis. SEGA describes it as a forerunner of real-time strategy and real-time simulation. Rather than only issuing commands from a distant overview, the player directly pilots a combat unit while also managing forces and territory.

SEGA’s publisher-provided description summarizes the objective: “Protect your base, expand your territories, and capture as many free and enemy bases as possible by accumulating resources and building units to assist you.” The goal is to strengthen your position and ultimately bring down the opposing home base.

How does its strategy loop work?

Capture bases and expand

Players contest free and enemy bases across the battlefield. Capturing territory is not just a scorekeeping exercise: it is part of expanding the position from which forces can be deployed and the enemy’s home base attacked.

Gather resources and build forces

Resources fund unit production at the home base. You then deploy those units to support the fight for intermediate bases and to pressure the opponent. The result is a continuous loop of securing territory, building up forces, and pushing the front line.

Pilot a transforming combat unit

The player’s own fighter switches between aircraft and grounded robot forms. Aircraft mode offers faster movement and the ability to transport units. Robot mode is less mobile but can manage energy and deal more damage. This makes the player both an army manager and an active combatant: choosing where to go and when to transform is part of the strategy, not a separate menu-only layer.

Did Herzog Zwei invent the RTS genre?

Calling the game “the” inventor overstates what the available historical evidence establishes. SEGA’s official Japanese SEGA AGES page calls it a forerunner of real-time strategy and real-time simulation. Nintendo Life’s review describes it as instrumental in RTS evolution and reports that developers of Dune II and Warcraft cited it as an influence. That is useful secondary historical framing, but it is not direct testimony from those developers in the cited material.

A more precise description is that Herzog Zwei anticipated and helped shape recognizable RTS conventions: simultaneous action, base control, resource use, unit production, and pressure across a battlefield. It was an influential precursor, not a proven sole originator of everything that followed.

SEGA AGES edition Digital Nintendo Switch release. Nintendo’s US and UK listings give September 24, 2020; SEGA lists August 27, 2020 for Japan. Nintendo lists AI play, one- or two-player play on one system, and online play for two. The edition description also lists practice/tutorial support, save states, and replays. The UK listing specifies English and Japanese language support.

The Switch details above are the publishers’ and platform holder’s listing specifications, not independent performance tests. Check your regional eShop for present availability. If you want a physical copy, the original cartridge is the relevant release; SEGA’s manual says it is intended exclusively for Mega Drive/Genesis systems, so confirm compatibility for any specific hardware before using it.

What makes the Switch edition a convenient way to learn it?

For a new player, practice and tutorial support offer an onboarding option, while save states and replays provide tools to revisit play. Online multiplayer is listed alongside local play, so the Switch edition supports both solo practice and matches with another player. Those conveniences distinguish the digital re-release from the original cartridge without changing the historical role of the game.
