Choose OpenClaw if your priority is breadth: it is built around chat channels such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack and Discord, and its community skill library gives you many ready-made integrations. Choose Hermes Agent if your priority is accumulation: the Nous Research runtime is designed to learn from repeated work, create skills from experience and keep a searchable history for projects that run over months.
Both are model-agnostic and can run on a local machine or a VPS. The practical decision is less about which agent is universally better than whether your work is channel-heavy and immediately useful (OpenClaw) or stateful, iterative and long-lived (Hermes).

| Question | OpenClaw | Hermes Agent |
|---|---|---|
| Best starting point | Teams or individuals who want to connect several chat apps quickly | Developers building a persistent, scriptable agent for ongoing work |
| Primary advantage | Broad channel coverage and a large library of community skills | Experience-driven skill creation and long-term, searchable history |
| Operating style | Messaging-first Node.js gateway | Headless daemon with CLI and HTTP API |
| Setup feel | Generally more approachable for a first deployment | More terminal-, GitHub- and model-API-oriented |
| Local-model caution | One report found tool calling unreliable through an Ollama OpenAI-compatible endpoint | One report says agentic tasks need at least a 64,000-token context window |
| Evidence quality for hardware and security | Mostly secondary, conflicting guidance | Mostly project documentation and community reports; verify versions and defaults |
Those rows are a decision map, not official performance benchmarks. No verified, vendor-published benchmark or universal hardware requirement was identified for either project as of October 14, 2026.

The runtime is intended to be run without a graphical desktop. You interact with it through a command-line interface, an HTTP API or a script that calls the daemon. That shape suits scheduled jobs, internal tools and a single VPS where you want one persistent process rather than a chat bot that is always tied to a particular front end.
Hermes can use hosted model APIs or a local/self-hosted model through a custom endpoint. Its appeal is cumulative: repeated tasks can be turned into reusable skills, and prior activity is retained in a layered memory system with searchable SQLite history. In a long project, that can reduce the amount of context you must restate manually.

Reports about the project list Local, Docker, SSH, Singularity, Modal and Daytona execution backends. Availability and configuration can vary by release, so check the current configuration reference before selecting one. The important operational point is that Hermes can separate agent work from the host process instead of granting every task unrestricted access to the VPS.
What OpenClaw is
OpenClaw is described as a Node.js gateway that connects an agent to messaging channels. The commonly cited integrations are WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack and Discord. A messaging-first design lets you pair a channel, send a request from a familiar app and receive results without building a separate user interface.
OpenClaw also uses a community skill model. Skills are human-authored SKILL.md files shared through ClawHub. You can inspect, adapt and version those instructions, then expose the resulting capability through the channels your gateway serves.
Both projects are model-agnostic. OpenClaw was initially associated with Anthropic’s Claude family and later added other providers, while Hermes can be pointed at hosted or local endpoints. Provider support, authentication fields and tool behavior are release-specific; treat a provider listed in a third-party guide as a lead to verify, not as a compatibility guarantee.

The real difference: breadth versus accumulation
Channels and integrations favor OpenClaw
If your users already live in several chat applications, OpenClaw has the clearer fit. A single gateway can present the same agent capability in WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack and Discord, avoiding separate bots and duplicated command handling. This is especially useful for alerts, lightweight approvals, support triage and personal automation where the conversation itself is the interface.
Hermes can be called from scripts and an HTTP client, but its documented strength is not a ready-made catalog of consumer chat channels. You would normally add the surrounding integration yourself or place another service in front of its API. That extra engineering is worthwhile when the agent’s state and repeatability matter more than immediate channel coverage.
Skills are curated in OpenClaw and generated in Hermes
OpenClaw’s SKILL.md approach makes authorship explicit. A person writes the procedure, reviews it, commits it and shares it. The result is easy to distribute and can be audited line by line, but someone must notice when a workflow needs improvement and edit the file.
Hermes is designed to derive skills from repeated work. When a task recurs, the agent can turn successful patterns into a reusable capability. This can lower maintenance for an evolving workflow, but it also creates a governance requirement: review generated skills, restrict their permissions and keep a change history so an accidental behavior does not silently become the new default.
Memory models suit different time horizons
OpenClaw is commonly described as storing Markdown memory with hybrid retrieval. Markdown is portable and human-readable, which makes it convenient to inspect with ordinary tools and back up alongside configuration. Retrieval quality depends on how the files are organized and how the gateway indexes them.
Hermes uses a layered memory stack that includes searchable SQLite history. A database-backed event trail is useful when you need to query what happened, locate an earlier decision or feed structured history into later runs. It is less immediately transparent than opening a text file, so include database backups and a retention policy in your operations plan. Guides disagree about which design is easier to audit; the better choice depends on whether your team prefers document review or structured queries.

Setup: what the first deployment actually involves
OpenClaw deployment path
- Prepare a host. Use a Linux VPS or another machine that can run a supported Node.js gateway continuously. Create a dedicated operating-system user and a directory outside personal home files.
- Install the gateway and provider dependencies. Follow the release documentation for the Node.js version, package manager and environment variables required by your chosen model provider. Do not copy credentials into a skill file or a public repository.
- Configure one channel first. Start with a single WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack or Discord connection. Complete the channel’s pairing or bot authorization flow, then send a harmless test message.
- Add skills selectively. Review each
SKILL.md, identify every command or external service it can reach and pin the version you tested. Community skills are code-adjacent operational instructions, not automatically trusted plugins. - Put the process under a supervisor. Use the host’s service manager or a container restart policy, capture logs and verify that a failed model request does not leave the gateway in a loop.
- Expand channels only after isolation works. Give each channel the minimum permissions it needs and confirm that a message received in one channel cannot expose another user’s private history.
OpenClaw feels easier because the result is visible quickly: pair a chat app and ask the agent a question. The trade-off is that every additional channel adds another identity, webhook or session to secure and monitor.
Hermes deployment path
- Read the current prerequisites. Start with the official Hermes documentation, not an old mirror. A community mirror labeled version 0.2.0 is not maintained by Nous Research and may describe different options.
- Install using a documented method. The project provides installation choices and a setup wizard. Select the method that matches your host, Python/runtime environment and preferred update process.
- Run the wizard and set credentials. Choose a hosted model provider or configure a custom endpoint for a local/self-hosted model. Keep secrets in environment variables or the host’s secret store.
- Define execution boundaries. Select an available backend such as Local, Docker or SSH according to the task’s risk. For untrusted inputs, prefer an isolated backend and a filesystem with no unrelated data.
- Exercise the CLI and HTTP API. Run a short task, inspect the generated history and confirm that the service can be restarted without losing its database or configuration.
- Promote repeatable work into skills deliberately. Review what Hermes proposes, remove unnecessary permissions and record the approval in version control before using the skill on production data.
Hermes rewards users who are comfortable reading GitHub projects, editing configuration and troubleshooting model APIs. That is a higher initial barrier than pairing a chat channel, but it gives you more control over how the agent is called and where its state lives.

VPS sizing and resource planning
Hardware guidance for both projects is unofficial and contradictory. Treat the figures below as planning estimates from community and comparison guides, not minimums promised by either project.
| Workload or claim | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud-model setup, light use | About 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM | A reasonable starting point cited by community guides; not an official requirement |
| Small local model with Hermes | 4 GB RAM and 2 vCPU | One comparison’s estimate; model size and quantization determine whether it is practical |
| OpenClaw testing | 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM | Secondary guidance for a modest gateway |
| OpenClaw production guidance | 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM | Another secondary estimate, generally assuming more concurrent work |
| Very small OpenClaw footprint | 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and about 500 MB disk | Reported as a documentation minimum by one guide; do not assume it covers browser automation or local inference |
| Disk and container tooling | 40 GB SSD and Docker 24 or newer | Appears in some guides; verify against the release you deploy |
| Chromium browser automation | About 2–4 GB RAM for one session | Browser processes can become the dominant cost even when the gateway itself is small |
Running a local model through Ollama changes the calculation. The model’s weights, context window and inference workload usually matter more than the agent framework. If you use a hosted model, a small VPS may be adequate; if you load a substantial local model, plan memory for the model plus the agent, browser processes, database, logs and operating-system cache.
Start with monitoring rather than buying the largest instance. Track resident memory, CPU saturation, disk growth and response latency during the heaviest workflow you expect. Increase resources when the measurements show pressure, not because an unattributed table calls a number a requirement.
Local models: two important caveats
One single-source report warns that OpenClaw tool calling can be unreliable when Ollama is reached through an OpenAI-compatible /v1 endpoint. That is a compatibility warning, not a universal failure statement. Test the exact model, adapter and tool schema you plan to use; a conversational reply is not proof that function calls, streaming and retries work correctly.

The same report says Hermes agentic work needs at least a 64,000-token context window. Because this is also a single-source claim, verify the current Hermes guidance and your model’s actual context limit. A model may advertise a large window while your server, quantization or provider caps usable tokens lower.
For either project, create a test matrix before switching production traffic: one plain question, one tool call, a multi-step task, a long retrieved history and a deliberate tool error. Record whether arguments are valid, whether the agent recovers and how much memory the run consumes.
Security, sandboxing and operational risk
Security claims surrounding this comparison are unresolved. One guide cites a February OpenClaw remote-code-execution incident as a reason to switch, while another says Hermes has stronger security defaults. Those claims were not verified against a primary advisory, so they should not be treated as an established ranking of either project.
Regardless of framework, self-hosting an agent means treating prompts, skills, connectors and model output as potentially hazardous inputs. Apply these controls:
- Run the agent as a dedicated unprivileged user or container.
- Keep model credentials, channel tokens and SSH keys outside prompts and skill repositories.
- Allow outbound network access only to services the workflow requires.
- Mount only the directories the task needs; make sensitive paths read-only or unavailable.
- Require confirmation for destructive shell commands, account changes and external messages.
- Pin dependencies, update on a maintenance schedule and read the project’s current security advisories before upgrading.
- Back up configuration, OpenClaw Markdown memory or Hermes SQLite data, and test restoration.
- Expose an HTTP API through TLS and an authenticated reverse proxy; never leave an administrative endpoint open to the public internet.
Hermes’s range of execution backends can help you choose stronger isolation for risky jobs. OpenClaw’s channel convenience makes identity boundaries especially important: a compromised bot token or overly broad skill can turn a casual chat command into a privileged action.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which one fits your use case?
| Your situation | Better first choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You want one assistant reachable from several chat apps | OpenClaw | Its gateway and channel coverage reduce integration work |
| You are building a months-long research, coding or operations process | Hermes | Generated skills and searchable history support cumulative work |
| You are new to self-hosting agents | OpenClaw | Pairing a channel provides a shorter path to a visible result |
| You prefer CLI automation, APIs and Git-based configuration | Hermes | The headless daemon matches scriptable deployment patterns |
| You need a local model on a small machine | Neither by default | Validate context, tool calling and memory with the exact model before committing |
| You need the strongest security posture | Undecided | Published comparative security claims are not independently verified; evaluate current advisories and defaults yourself |
Can you run both?
Yes. Experienced users reportedly run both, and their architectures can complement each other. OpenClaw can remain the chat-facing gateway while Hermes handles a long-running workflow through its CLI or HTTP API. In that arrangement, define a narrow API contract, authenticate calls between services and decide which system owns memory. Do not let both agents write to the same state directory without a documented synchronization strategy.
Best Value
- 【No Drill Mounted】Cable management tray can be assembled in as little as 3 minutes or less-simply. Side clips easily clampe the edge of desk, pass through the holes on the sides, and secure excess cables with baskets. Desk cable management supports inward or outward installation to meet your needs in different scenarios, and provides you with great convenience when collecting and organizing wires.
- 【Rubber Pad Protects Desk】Wire organizer under desk built-in soft rubber pads on the clamp protect your desk from scratches, so you will not damage your furniture or office.
- 【Sturdy and Beautiful】Cord management under desk is made of high-quality carbon steel and holds about 15 lbs. The wire basket has 2 holes on each side of the tray to enable your cables to pass freely. Cable baskets are suitable for desk thickness use from 0.4" to 2.4".
- 【Space Saving & Keep Organized】Desk cable management tray holds all your power cords, outlet strips, USB hubs and computer transformers hidden from your feet, and the data cables will not enter the vacuum cleaner to keep your desk clean and tidy. Desk wire organizer is also suitable for use in the kitchen and outdoors.
- 【Reduce Safety Risks】Cable tray under desk keeps all plugs away from your kids, no more worry about tripping. Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.
A simpler split is operational: use OpenClaw for short, conversational actions and Hermes for scheduled jobs, project archives or tasks that need generated skills. Keep separate service accounts and logs so an incident in one runtime does not automatically grant access to the other.
Migration and first-week checklist
- Write down the channels, tools, files and external accounts the agent must access.
- Choose a hosted model first unless local inference is a firm requirement; it isolates framework problems from model-serving problems.
- Deploy on a disposable VPS or VM with a dedicated user, firewall and automatic backups.
- Run the same five-task test suite on the candidate you favor: a simple answer, a tool call, a multi-step workflow, a long-memory lookup and a failed-tool recovery.
- Measure memory, CPU, disk and latency during concurrent use, including any browser automation.
- Review every community skill or generated skill before granting write, shell or messaging permissions.
- Document restart, rollback and data-restore procedures before inviting other users.
- Recheck provider compatibility, security advisories and configuration names whenever you upgrade; guides and mirrors can lag behind the current release.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hermes Agent officially version 0.2.0?
Not necessarily. Version 0.2.0 appears on a community documentation mirror, but that mirror is not from Nous Research and may be outdated. Use the official documentation and repository to identify the release you are installing.
Can a 1 GB VPS run OpenClaw?
Some secondary guidance calls 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM and roughly 500 MB of disk a minimum, but that figure may exclude browser automation, concurrent users, logging and local-model inference. Treat it as a low-end experiment, monitor memory closely and expect to resize for real workloads.
Does either project require a particular model provider?
No. Both are described as model-agnostic. Provider setup, tool support and endpoint behavior still vary, so test the exact model and adapter rather than assuming that text generation compatibility means reliable agent tooling.
Which memory system is easier to audit?
There is no settled answer. OpenClaw’s Markdown files are straightforward to read and review, while Hermes’s SQLite history is structured and searchable. Choose based on whether your audit process favors document diffs or database queries, then add retention and backup controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I expose Hermes Agent through a chat app?
Yes, but Hermes is primarily a headless daemon with CLI and HTTP interfaces. You would normally add or configure a separate chat connector rather than relying on the built-in breadth associated with OpenClaw.
Should I use Docker for either agent on a VPS?
Docker can simplify isolation and repeatable deployment, but it does not replace least-privilege configuration, network controls or credential hygiene. Confirm the project’s supported backend and persistence settings before containerizing.
