Hermes Agent runs natively on Windows 10 and Windows 11, so you do not need Linux just to install it. A Linux VPS is the better home when Hermes must stay online for scheduled jobs or messaging channels while your personal computer sleeps, reboots, or changes networks. For interactive, occasional use, native Windows is simpler; for unattended automation, choose an always-on Linux VPS.

This guide compares native Windows, WSL2, and a Linux VPS, then gives installation paths, realistic resource guidance, compatibility caveats, and recovery steps.

What Windows support actually means

The current Hermes Agent README describes native Windows support, and the official Nous Research Windows guide provides a PowerShell installer for Windows 10 and Windows 11. The native setup does not require WSL, Cygwin, Docker, or administrator rights. Its files are placed under %LOCALAPPDATA%hermes, which keeps the installation in your user profile.

Some older third-party pages still describe native Windows as an early beta and warn that certain skills are disabled. That advice may refer to an earlier build. The newer project README calls native support full, but skill-level differences can still occur between operating systems and releases. If a particular skill matters to your workflow, test it on the exact version you plan to run rather than assuming every Linux capability is available on Windows.

Native Windows is a good fit when you sit at the machine, want the shortest setup, or do not need Hermes to run while the PC is off. It is not inherently a server deployment: Windows sleep, updates, sign-outs, network changes, and power loss can stop an unattended task unless you deliberately configure the computer to remain available.

When a Linux VPS is the better choice

A VPS gives Hermes a persistent, internet-reachable host in a data center. Third-party deployment guides consistently identify an always-on machine, VPS, Docker host, or managed cloud instance as the practical requirement for scheduled jobs and messaging channels. The VPS does not make Hermes smarter; it changes its availability.

Use a VPS for unattended work

  • Scheduled jobs: timers and recurring automations can run without your desktop being powered on.
  • Messaging channels: a continuously running process can receive and respond to events at any hour.
  • Stable networking: the process is not tied to a home Wi-Fi connection, laptop sleep, or a changing local IP address.
  • Separate execution: experiments and agent-generated files stay away from your daily Windows profile.

Stay on Windows for interactive work

  • You launch Hermes manually and watch its output while working.
  • Your tasks depend on local Windows applications or files.
  • You do not need jobs to run during shutdowns, sleep, or travel.
  • You want to avoid recurring VPS charges and server administration.

Windows, WSL2, and Linux VPS compared

Option Installation and location Always-on behavior Filesystem and permissions Skill compatibility Best use
Native Windows PowerShell installer; %LOCALAPPDATA%hermes; no administrator rights required Only while the Windows machine and Hermes process remain available Uses the normal Windows user profile; no Linux filesystem boundary Newer README describes full native support; some older third-party guides report disabled skills Local, interactive sessions
WSL2 Install WSL2, then use the Linux installer inside Ubuntu; files live under ~/.hermes Can run while Windows is on, but still depends on the host PC Best performance and fewer permission problems when code and repositories stay in the Linux filesystem, not /mnt/c Uses the Linux path and is generally the closest Windows option to a Linux host Linux-compatible development on a Windows workstation
Linux VPS Linux installer; files under ~/.hermes; remote administration over SSH Designed for continuous operation, including scheduled jobs and messaging Native Linux filesystem and permissions; no Windows/WSL boundary Linux skills and tooling are the reference environment in most guides Unattended, production-like automation

Install Hermes Agent natively on Windows

The Windows path is intentionally short. Use the current PowerShell command shown in the official Nous Research Windows guide; its installer is maintained separately from the Linux shell script, so copy the command from that guide rather than adapting a Linux command in PowerShell.

  1. Confirm that the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and that your user account can open PowerShell.
  2. Open PowerShell as your normal user. Administrator elevation is not required for the documented native installation.
  3. Run the current native Windows installer one-liner from the official guide and allow it to place Hermes under %LOCALAPPDATA%hermes.
  4. Start the agent with hermes from PowerShell after the installer finishes.
  5. Run a small, non-critical task first. Confirm that the skills, credentials, local paths, and external services you need behave correctly on Windows.

If the hermes command is not found immediately, close and reopen PowerShell so the installer’s PATH change is loaded. If the command still fails, check that the installation directory exists under your user profile and that you are using the same Windows account that performed the installation.

Use WSL2 when you want Linux behavior without a VPS

WSL2 is a useful middle ground: Windows remains your desktop, while Hermes runs inside an Ubuntu Linux environment. The documented prerequisite is Windows 10 version 22H2 or later, or Windows 11.

  1. Open an administrator PowerShell window and run wsl --install.
  2. Restart Windows if prompted, then complete the Ubuntu first-run setup and create your Linux user.
  3. Enable systemd as recommended by the official Windows/WSL guidance so Linux services can run correctly inside the distribution.
  4. Keep the Hermes installation, Git repositories, and working files in the Linux filesystem (for example, your home directory), not under /mnt/c. Accessing projects through the Windows-mounted path can introduce slower file operations and permission friction.
  5. Inside Ubuntu, run the Linux installer:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/main/scripts/install.sh | bash
  1. Reload your shell configuration with source ~/.bashrc.
  2. Launch Hermes with hermes and test the skills you intend to use.

WSL2 removes many Windows-versus-Linux compatibility issues, but it does not create an independent server. A laptop shutdown, Windows update, or loss of connectivity still takes the environment offline.

Deploy Hermes Agent on a Linux VPS

Choose a suitable base image

One 2026 VPS guide recommends Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Treat that as a practical choice, not a hard Hermes requirement: the installer is a Linux shell script, and the exact distribution support can change with project releases. Select a current 64-bit Linux image offered by your VPS provider and retain console or recovery access before making changes.

Install from an SSH session

  1. Create the VPS with enough memory and disk for Hermes, its dependencies, logs, and your working files.
  2. Connect over SSH using a non-root administrative account where possible.
  3. Run the documented Linux installer:
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/main/scripts/install.sh | bash
  1. Reload the shell profile: source ~/.bashrc.
  2. Start Hermes with hermes and complete a basic task before adding schedules or messaging integrations.
  3. Configure your preferred service manager, container restart policy, or provider startup mechanism so Hermes is restarted after a reboot or process failure. The installer starts the application; it does not by itself guarantee that a crashed process will be relaunched.

The installation summary reported by one guide says the script provisions Python 3.11 through uv, Node.js v22, ripgrep, and ffmpeg. Another guide says Git is the only prerequisite required up front. Because those details are guide-level observations and can change, inspect the installer output and verify the versions on your chosen release instead of treating them as permanent specifications.

How much RAM and disk does Hermes need?

There is no single official hardware number in the Windows documentation. Published third-party figures conflict, so size the machine according to the model and workload rather than selecting the smallest advertised plan.

Resource Published guidance How to apply it
RAM for cloud APIs About 2 GB is the most consistent minimum in available guides Use 2 GB as a bare planning baseline for light API-driven use, then leave headroom for the operating system and concurrent jobs.
RAM figures that conflict One Contabo guide lists 1 GB; OpenClaw Launch and one review list 4 GB These are third-party recommendations, not official Hermes specifications. A 4 GB VPS is a safer starting point when several tools run concurrently.
RAM for local models Ollama-oriented guides commonly suggest 8 GB or more Local model inference needs substantially more memory than sending requests to a cloud API. Increase RAM based on the model’s own requirements.
Disk Approximately 1 GB to 2 GB for the basic installation in third-party FAQs and guides Plan at least 5 GB on a VPS so dependencies, logs, repositories, and temporary files do not exhaust the root volume.
Context window One setup guide suggests at least 64,000 tokens for multi-step tool calling Consider this an operational target from a third-party guide, not a confirmed official minimum. Check the model and provider limits you actually use.

Monitor memory and disk after enabling real skills. A machine that succeeds during installation can still fail later when multiple jobs, browser-like tools, logs, or local models run together.

Keeping a VPS reliable after installation

Separate credentials from code

Store API keys and messaging credentials using the secret-management method supported by your host or deployment tooling. Do not commit them to Git repositories or paste them into task files. Restrict SSH access and apply operating-system updates on a schedule that does not interrupt critical jobs.

Plan for restarts

VPS maintenance, kernel updates, and provider incidents can reboot the machine. Verify that Hermes starts automatically through your chosen service manager and that scheduled jobs are not duplicated after a restart. Send a harmless test message or run a non-destructive scheduled task after configuration so you know recovery works.

Control logs and storage

Long-running agents can accumulate logs and generated files. Set retention or rotation in the service and operating-system tools you use, and check available disk space periodically. The 5 GB planning recommendation is a floor for a small deployment, not a promise that every workload will fit.

Common problems and the correct response

The Windows installer works, but a skill is unavailable

Check the Hermes version and the skill’s own compatibility notes. Older third-party pages report disabled skills on the native Windows beta, while the newer README describes full native support. If the skill is Linux-specific, reproduce the task in WSL2 or on the VPS rather than forcing Windows path or shell assumptions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

WSL2 is slow or reports permission errors

Move the repository and Hermes working directory from /mnt/c into the Linux filesystem under your Ubuntu home directory. Keep Windows-mounted folders only for files that must be shared with Windows applications.

The VPS process stops when the SSH window closes

An interactive shell is not an uptime strategy. Run Hermes under a persistent service manager, supervisor, or container policy and configure restart behavior. Then disconnect and verify from a second session that the process remains available.

Installation completes but memory use keeps climbing

Check whether you are running a local model, several concurrent jobs, or tools that retain large outputs. Move to a larger memory plan, reduce concurrency, or use cloud APIs. The conflicting 1 GB, 2 GB, and 4 GB figures are why a minimum-sized VPS should be treated as an experiment rather than a production baseline.

A scheduled job never fires

Confirm the VPS clock and timezone, that the scheduler is enabled, and that Hermes was started by the same account that owns its configuration. Run the task manually, inspect service logs, and verify that the process survived the last reboot before changing the schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which setup should you choose?

  • Choose native Windows if you value the simplest install, work interactively, and can tolerate downtime when the PC is off.
  • Choose WSL2 if you need Linux tooling or filesystem behavior but still want to work from a Windows desktop.
  • Choose a Linux VPS if scheduled automation, messaging, and continuous availability matter more than avoiding a monthly server bill and basic Linux administration.

The practical migration path is incremental: start with native Windows to validate your prompts, credentials, and required skills; move the same workflow to WSL2 if Linux compatibility is the concern; then deploy to a VPS when uptime becomes the deciding requirement.
