A correctly sized HEPA air purifier can reduce wildfire-smoke particles in the room where it runs, but it cannot guarantee protection or clean your whole home. Choose by smoke CADR and room area, use a mechanical filter rather than an ozone-producing device, and keep the cleaner running while smoke is present. A compatible HVAC filter or a well-managed cleaner-air room can add protection.

What a HEPA purifier can protect you from

Wildfire smoke contains fine particles that mechanical filters can capture. A portable air cleaner is designed to treat the room where it operates; it does not automatically clean other rooms. A central HVAC filter can serve more of the home when the system runs. Both approaches can reduce indoor smoke, not eliminate it. The EPA cautions that no air cleaner or filter removes every pollutant in a home. See the EPA’s indoor air filtration guidance and Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

For smoke particles, HEPA and other pleated mechanical filters are the straightforward choice: they trap particles without producing ozone. Avoid assuming that every product marketed as an air purifier works the same way. EPA does not recommend electronic cleaners such as ionizers for smoke because their effectiveness is unclear and they may produce ozone. EPA advises using California Air Resources Board (CARB)-certified air cleaners to limit ozone emissions.

Choose a purifier by smoke CADR and room size

Use the cleaner’s smoke or tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR), not just a large advertised room-coverage figure. EPA’s wildfire guidance recommends a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. Measure the room’s length and width, multiply them, then apply that ratio.

Room area Minimum smoke CADR under EPA’s two-thirds rule
120 sq. ft. 80
300 sq. ft. 200
600 sq. ft. 400

For example, a 10-by-12-foot room is 120 square feet, so EPA’s guidance calls for a smoke CADR of at least 80. The EPA’s general particle-sizing table assumes an 8-foot ceiling; higher ceilings, open floor plans, or severe smoke can call for more capacity or multiple cleaners. For an open area, size for the full area the cleaner is expected to serve. EPA explains CADR and its relationship to room size in its home air-cleaner guide.

How to run a portable purifier during a smoke event

  1. Put it where people spend time. Run the unit in the occupied room, and leave its intake and outlet clear of curtains, furniture, and other obstructions.
  2. Use a high fan setting and keep it running. EPA recommends continuous operation on the highest setting during smoke events when practical. Higher fan speeds and longer run times generally increase filtration.
  3. Close outside openings when it is safe. Keep windows and doors closed during smoky conditions if doing so does not create a safety or overheating risk.
  4. Check and change the filter. Smoke can shorten the usual replacement interval. Inspect the filter frequently and replace it when dirty or when it starts to smell.

These steps lower indoor particle levels; they do not make a smoky building completely smoke-free. For additional room setup advice, see the EPA’s cleaner-air room guidance.

Will a HEPA filter remove smoke smell?

Not necessarily. CADR measures particle removal, not gas removal, and a particle filter alone should not be treated as a reliable odor or gas filter. EPA points to activated carbon or another absorbent material for gases, while noting that substantial material is needed and there is no widely used performance rating system for gas removal. Check what the specific purifier is designed to filter rather than treating a HEPA label as a guarantee against smoke odor.

Can your HVAC system help?

If your home has forced-air heating or cooling, its central filter may filter air across more rooms while the system fan operates. EPA recommends a MERV 13 or higher filter if the system can accommodate it. The filter must fit snugly to prevent air bypass, and the system must be able to handle it; ask the equipment manufacturer or an HVAC professional about compatibility. Run the fan more often during smoky conditions if the system permits. EPA’s filtration guidance and smoke-exposure advice cover these precautions.

When a DIY box-fan cleaner is an alternative

If a commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable, EPA describes a DIY unit made by attaching one or more MERV 13 furnace filters to a box fan with tape, clamps, or bungee cords. A cardboard shroud and additional or thicker filters can improve tested performance. Use a newer fan made since 2012 with a UL or ETL mark to reduce overheating risk.

EPA’s 2022 controlled-chamber research reported these wildfire-smoke CADR results for defined designs:

Make a cleaner-air room more effective

A purifier works as one part of a room-level strategy. When it is safe to remain indoors, close windows and doors, filter the air, keep the room cool, and avoid adding indoor particles. Do not smoke, burn candles, use aerosols, or cook with high heat in the room. Maintain a clear emergency exit; do not seal a room in a way that compromises escape or safety.
