Graham Hardie, the Liberal Democrat councillor for Helensburgh Central, has been suspended from party membership after being charged in connection with an alleged assault on his partner or former partner, according to a report published by The National on October 1, 2026. Hardie denies the charges and remains a councillor; the case is ongoing.
What Graham Hardie is charged with
The National reports that Hardie appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on September 23, 2026. He is accused of striking his partner or former partner to her injury at a property in Cardross on July 14. The report says he denies the charges. These are allegations, not findings of guilt. Read the report in The National.
The report also says Hardie is charged with breaching a bail undertaking that barred him from approaching or contacting the woman or entering the home. It alleges he entered the address and contacted her. The available report does not provide a court finding on either allegation.
Party suspension and council response
A Scottish Liberal Democrats spokesperson told The National: “Once we were made aware of these reports the party has moved to suspend his membership.” The report says Hardie remains a councillor. Party membership and elected office are separate matters: the reported party suspension does not itself remove his council seat.

The profile also lists committee and board memberships, including Community Services; Environment, Development and Infrastructure; Planning, Protective Services and Licensing; Audit and Scrutiny; and the Argyll and Bute Licensing Board. It continues to display “Liberal Democrats” as his party. That listing is not a statement about the reported suspension: the profile does not discuss it, and its search result was last crawled roughly three months before October 3, 2026.

The National reports that Sheriff Frances McCartney continued Hardie’s bail and set a trial for November 19. The report does not state the year alongside that date. Since it describes a September 2026 hearing, November 19, 2026 is the contextual inference, not an explicitly stated year.
