Healthcare staff who encounter a workflow problem may be able to use plain-language AI coding tools to prototype a software fix themselves, rather than waiting for a vendor or technical team to interpret a request. That is the argument Ryan Hungate makes in an October 5, 2026, opinion column for MedCity News. The idea is about who can start a solution—not a claim that developers, vendors, or clinical oversight are no longer needed.

What Hungate means by staff-built software

Hungate describes a familiar gap: frontline staff understand the details of a workflow, but software requests often pass through technical teams or vendors who must reconstruct the problem from a description. He calls using conversational, plain-language instructions to generate software “vibe coding.” In his view, that can let a staff member create an initial working version of a tool without first becoming a full-time programmer.

The proposed shift is from waiting for someone else to translate a request to letting the person closest to the problem shape an early solution. It does not establish that a prototype will be production-ready, integrate safely with existing systems, or perform better than a conventionally built tool.

Which healthcare problems could benefit?

The column uses everyday operational friction to illustrate where a small, locally tailored tool might help:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Scheduling: A front-desk step associated with missed appointments could be made more visible or easier to manage.
  • Claims: A billing manager could clarify where claims stall, or a clinic manager could build a claims view that matches the team’s needs.
  • Repeated documentation: Hungate points to “the note written twice: once for the chart, once for the payor.”
  • Referral tracking: A referral lost in fax or email could be easier to follow through a local tracking view.
  • Reporting: A practice leader could create a reporting layout that reflects how the organization actually works.

These are examples in Hungate’s argument, including illustrative dental-practice scenarios. The column does not identify the practices, document study methods, or report measured results. They should not be read as verified case studies or proof that a particular tool reduced no-shows, sped claims, or improved patient outcomes.

What the proposal does—and does not—promise

The case for staff-led prototyping is that the person who sees a workflow problem can express its details directly and try an initial fix without waiting for a request to travel through a queue. Hungate argues that the amount of coding skill needed on day one may shrink. He does not argue that engineering expertise is unnecessary: technical teams may still be needed to review, integrate, maintain, and support a tool, particularly when it becomes part of a critical workflow.

Nor does the column quantify the time or cost saved. Hungate says conventional fixes can take “a year or more,” but supplies no dataset or method for that assertion. It is his claim in an opinion piece, not an independently established industry-wide timeline.

Why permissions and clinical risk matter

Hungate’s argument depends on safeguards being built into the platform, rather than expecting an inexperienced individual builder to manage permissions, data boundaries, and security alone. The column does not specify technical controls or establish that any particular AI platform is secure, compliant, or appropriate for healthcare data. Those properties must be verified for the actual system and deployment.

Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

It also distinguishes operational reporting from tools that affect clinical work. A claims dashboard is not equivalent in risk to clinical documentation or decision support. Hungate says the latter uses require validation, but does not provide a validation method. A generated clinical tool therefore cannot be treated as safe for use merely because it works in a demonstration or reflects a clinician’s instructions.

How to assess a staff-built prototype

The column is an argument for enabling safer experimentation, not an implementation checklist. For an organization considering a prototype, its stated concerns point to practical questions to resolve before anyone relies on the tool:

  • Define the use: Is it a low-risk operational view, or could it affect documentation, care decisions, or patient safety?
  • Check access and data boundaries: Who can see, change, export, or share the information, and what safeguards enforce those limits?
  • Test against the real workflow: Confirm the prototype handles ordinary cases, exceptions, and handoffs—not only the example that prompted it.
  • Set review and ownership: Identify who approves changes, monitors errors, and maintains the tool if the original builder is unavailable.
  • Require appropriate validation: Clinical documentation and decision-support uses need a level of review suited to their risks; a prototype alone is not validation.

These are evaluation questions derived from the column’s distinction between platform safeguards and clinical validation; they are not controls or procedures specified by Hungate.

How strong is the evidence?

Hungate is an orthodontist and Chief Clinical and Strategy Officer at Henry Schein One. His piece appeared in MedCity News’s MedCity Influencers program on October 5, 2026; the publisher describes the program as a channel for submitted perspectives on healthcare business and innovation. The column offers no named software product, independent comparative study, quantified deployment outcome, or published statistic verifying the scale, safety, or effectiveness of the proposed benefits. Its value is as a perspective on who might prototype workflow software—not as proof that AI-built healthcare tools are already delivering measured gains.
