If a header or footer is missing from your printout in Windows 11, the cause is usually one of four things: the app’s own setting, a first-page option in Word, a blank field in Notepad, or a printer margin that pushes content off the page. Start by working out which app and which stage of printing is affected, then apply the matching fix below.
Find out where the header or footer disappears
Before changing any setting, check three things. The answer tells you which section below applies.
| What you see | What it means | Where to go next |
|---|---|---|
| Missing in the document’s own view and print preview | The header or footer is not set up in the file, or only the first page is different | Word or Notepad sections below |
| Present in print preview or a PDF, but missing on paper | The app is fine; the problem sits between the app and the printer | Printer test page and troubleshooter |
| Only one file or app is affected | The problem is specific to that document or program | Work through the matching app section |
| Every app fails, including a Windows test page | The issue is systemic to the printer or its driver | Get Help printer troubleshooter |
Word for the web does not let you edit or print headers and footers reliably
Microsoft’s support article “Differences between using a document in the browser and in Word” states that Word for the web preserves headers and footers but does not allow you to edit them. Editing view in the browser also does not display page formatting such as margins. If your header or footer is missing in the browser version, open the file in desktop Word, where you can edit headers and footers and access print layout controls.

Desktop Word: check Different First Page
A header or footer can be absent on page one only because of a deliberate setting. Word’s header and footer controls include a Different First Page option, which can give page one a distinct header and footer or none at all. If later pages print correctly but page one does not, use this path:

- Double-click the header or footer area on page one to open the header and footer editing tools.
- On the Header & Footer tab, locate the Options group.
- Check whether Different First Page is ticked. If it is and you want the same header on every page, clear it. If you want a separate first-page design, type it into the first-page header or footer area.
- Open File > Print and confirm the preview shows the change before printing.
Notepad: the Header and Footer fields in Page Setup
Notepad prints a header or footer only when the text boxes in its Page Setup contain something. Microsoft’s Notepad help documents that blank Header or Footer boxes produce no printed header or footer. The default values are &f, which prints the document title, and Page &p, which prints the page number.
- Open the document in Notepad and select File > Page setup.
- Enter the text or codes you want in the Header and Footer boxes. For example,
&ffor the file name andPage &pfor the page number. - Select OK, then print again.
Notepad does not save these values. You must enter them again each time you open Notepad and print, so a header that printed yesterday can disappear today without any fault in the printer.

Content clipped at the top or bottom edge: check printer margins
If the header or footer is present on screen but its text is cut off at the top or bottom of the page, the printer’s minimum printable margin is the likely cause. Microsoft’s guidance on Word page borders that do not print identifies the printer’s minimum margin setting as the usual reason and advises increasing the margin on the edge where content is missing. This explains clipped edge content, but it does not mean every missing header or footer comes from margins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- In Word, select Layout > Margins and choose a wider preset, or select Custom Margins and increase the top or bottom value.
- Check the printer’s manual or its printable-area specification if you need the exact minimum for your model.
Several apps or every print job fail: run Windows troubleshooting
When the problem appears in more than one app, or a Windows test page fails to print, the cause is more likely in the printer connection or driver. Work through these steps in order.

- Run the printer troubleshooter. Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and run the printer troubleshooter, or open the Get Help app and ask it about printer problems.
- Restart the Print Spooler. Open Services (
services.msc), find Print Spooler, select Restart, then print again. You can also runnet stop spoolerand thennet start spoolerin an administrator Command Prompt. - Update or reinstall the printer driver. Microsoft’s printer troubleshooting guidance recommends updating or reinstalling the driver when printing fails more broadly. Use the manufacturer’s current driver for your model and Windows version.
Quick checklist before you print again
- The header or footer appears in print preview or a PDF.
- Different First Page is set the way you intend in desktop Word.
- Notepad’s Header and Footer boxes contain your text or codes.
- Top and bottom margins are wide enough for the printer’s minimum printable area.
- The Windows test page prints from the same printer.
Microsoft’s support articles for these steps are “Fix printing problems in Word, Excel, or other apps,” “Fix printer connection and printing problems in Windows,” “Help in Notepad,” and “Edit your existing headers and footers in Word.” Each describes the settings above for its own app and Windows version.
