Rohit Prasad became CEO of Boston Dynamics on October 7, 2026, bringing experience leading Alexa and Amazon’s artificial-intelligence work to a company known for building robots. The appointment signals the company’s intent to combine AI with its existing robotics platforms; it is a stated strategy, not evidence that new capabilities or commercial results have already arrived.
Who is Rohit Prasad?
Before joining Boston Dynamics, Prasad was Amazon’s Senior Vice President and Head Scientist for Alexa and Artificial General Intelligence. Boston Dynamics says he spent 12 years at Amazon, helped build Alexa from its early days, and led development of Amazon Nova foundation models. The company describes Alexa as being used in hundreds of millions of households worldwide.
His earlier career was in applied machine learning: Boston Dynamics says he spent nearly 14 years at Raytheon BBN Technologies leading machine-learning research and applications. That combination—research leadership and responsibility for AI products at broad consumer scale—is the relevant thread in his move to a robotics company.

Boston Dynamics announced Prasad’s appointment on October 6, 2026; he took over as CEO the following day. He succeeds Robert Playter, who stepped down in February 2026, according to Reuters. Reuters identifies Boston Dynamics as owned by Hyundai Motor Group.

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
The company said Prasad was expected to join Boston Dynamics’ board, subject to the required approval process. That was an expectation at the time of the announcement, not confirmation that the appointment to the board had been completed.
Why hire an AI leader to run a robotics company?
Boston Dynamics says it wants to accelerate its “Physical AI” strategy by bringing advanced AI together with its robotics expertise and commercializing intelligent machines for industrial, enterprise, and other real-world settings. The company’s stated aim is to build and scale systems that can operate in those environments. The announcement does not establish that the strategy has already improved robot performance, productivity, safety, or sales.

Prasad’s background makes the appointment legible: Alexa and Nova are examples of AI efforts he helped lead as products and systems, while Boston Dynamics brings an established portfolio of robots designed for physical tasks. The challenge is not simply adding a conversational interface to a robot. Systems working in the real world must connect perception and context to reliable action, while operating within the requirements of their environment and task.
In the appointment announcement, Prasad said the company could “build intelligent systems that create meaningful value in real-world environments” by bringing AI and robotics together. Jaehoon Chang, Hyundai Motor Group vice chair and chair of Boston Dynamics’ board, likewise pointed to the combination of the company’s robotics, Prasad’s experience turning AI into products, and Hyundai’s manufacturing, logistics, and mobility capabilities. These statements describe the rationale and ambition behind the appointment, not a confirmed product roadmap or demonstrated outcome.

- Meet Echo Dot Max: Experience rich room-filling sound that automatically adapts to your space and fine-tunes playback. Features a built-in smart home hub and Omnisense technology for highly personalized experiences.
- Music to your ears: With nearly 3x the bass versus Echo Dot (2022 release), it fits beautifully in any space, delivering your personal sound stage with deep bass and enhanced clarity. Listen to streaming services, such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify, and SiriusXM. Encore!
- Do more with device pairing: Connect compatible Echo smart speakers and smart displays in different rooms, or pair with a second Echo Dot Max to enjoy even richer sound
- Simple smart home control: Set routines, pair and control lights, locks, and thousands of smart home devices that work with Alexa without needing a separate smart home hub. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature or presence detection.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot Max doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
What does Boston Dynamics make?
The company’s current portfolio spans different tasks and stages of development. Its own descriptions distinguish a deployed industrial inspection robot, a box-handling system for logistics and retail, and a humanoid platform still in development.
| Robot | Role described by Boston Dynamics | How to understand its status |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | A quadruped for industrial inspections and facility performance monitoring, intended to help keep people out of harm’s way. | An inspection and facility-monitoring system; the description does not provide performance figures. |
| Stretch | A robot designed to move boxes for logistics and retail customers. | Focused on box handling, rather than general-purpose humanoid work. |
| Atlas | An electric humanoid platform. | In development; the company’s description does not establish general commercial availability. |
These platforms illustrate why the strategy is consequential but not yet an outcome: Boston Dynamics has robots aimed at specific physical tasks, while Prasad’s role is to lead the company’s effort to bring more advanced AI into that work. The company has not provided independently established performance results, production figures, or sales outcomes in the appointment announcement.

What Prasad’s past comments suggest—and what they don’t
Fast Company has framed Prasad’s move as a chance to connect AI that understands requests with machines that can act in the physical world. In historical comments, he argued that assistants need richer context and grounding. In a later interview, he used a thermostat example: if someone says they are too warm, a useful assistant should clarify whether they want the temperature lowered, rather than responding irrelevantly.

Likewise, his 2020 Fast Company column called for researchers to move beyond inherited assumptions about AI; it is historical commentary, not a statement of the company’s current roadmap.

What to watch next
The appointment’s significance will become clearer through concrete company actions: whether Boston Dynamics integrates new AI capabilities into specific robots, which industrial or enterprise tasks it targets, and whether it reports evidence of reliable deployment at scale. Until those details and results are established, Physical AI is best understood as the company’s strategic direction—not a claim that its robots already have broadly human-like intelligence or that Atlas is ready for general sale.
