HDR in photography means high dynamic range: representing a wider span between the brightest highlights and darkest shadows. It can refer to combining multiple exposures to capture scene detail, or to rendering an image for an HDR-compatible display. Those are related but distinct uses of the term.
What does HDR mean in photos?
Dynamic range is the span from the darkest to the brightest parts of an image. A high-contrast scene may include bright areas and deep shadows whose detail a single ordinary exposure cannot retain at once. Multi-exposure HDR addresses this by combining frames exposed for different tonal regions.
The word HDR is also used for the output: an image rendered to take advantage of a compatible HDR display. That is different from the capture technique. Adobe describes both HDR capture and HDR display output in its HDR photography guide and Camera Raw HDR output documentation.

A typical workflow captures a dark, middle, and bright exposure, then merges them in HDR-capable editing software. The darker frame can retain highlight detail while the brighter one can retain shadow detail; the merged image brings useful information from the frames together. The exact number of frames and camera or software workflow can vary.

- Choose a static, high-contrast scene. Moving subjects can shift between frames, complicating the merge.
- Capture exposures that cover the highlights and shadows. Use manual exposure bracketing or the camera’s supported auto exposure bracketing.
- Merge the bracketed files. Use editing software with an HDR merge function.
- Review the rendering for the intended output. Check highlight and shadow detail and the overall tonal appearance at the size and on the type of display or print where it will be viewed.
HDR versus bracketing
Bracketing is capture; HDR merging is processing. Exposure bracketing makes a sequence of photographs with different exposure settings. HDR software combines selected frames to create an HDR image. Bracketing alone does not merge files or create the final HDR rendering. Nikon’s guides explain exposure bracketing and HDR photography.
Do you always need multiple exposures?
No. A single RAW file may contain enough usable tonal range for some scenes. Whether one exposure is sufficient depends on the contrast in the scene and whether the file preserves the highlight and shadow detail you need. Bracketing is useful when one capture cannot retain both. Adobe discusses RAW latitude and HDR as a workflow in its 2023 HDR overview; its stops-based contrast description is a rule of thumb, not a universal threshold.

In-camera HDR or bracket-and-merge?
Some cameras offer an in-camera HDR mode; others may not, and available options or restrictions depend on the model. Manual bracketing followed by a software merge gives you a separate capture-and-processing workflow, while an in-camera mode handles some of that process in the camera. Consult the manual for the exact model before relying on a feature or combining it with other settings.
For example, the Nikon Z7/Z6 manual says those models’ HDR mode cannot be combined with NEF (RAW) recording, bracketing, flash photography, multiple exposure, and certain other functions. That is a restriction for those models, not a rule for every camera. See the Nikon Z7/Z6 HDR manual section.

What is tone mapping?
HDR image data can exceed the range that an SDR screen or print can reproduce. Tone mapping adapts the image’s tonal values to that narrower output range; it is a rendering step, not a synonym for oversaturated or exaggerated editing. Adobe notes that an HDR photo viewed on an SDR display must be adjusted or tone-mapped to preserve its appearance as closely as possible in its HDR output documentation.
HDR appearance depends on more than the capture: the editing application, file format, display, and viewing environment all matter. A file prepared for HDR output will not necessarily look identical on every screen.

Why can an HDR photo look different on another screen?
The screens may support different output ranges, or one may be showing an SDR rendering of HDR image data. Applications also differ in HDR support and in how they adapt an image for SDR viewing. When checking a final image, consider whether the target is an HDR display, an SDR screen, or a print, and inspect the version intended for that output.
