If your smart TV says “No Signal” while an HDMI cable is plugged in, first select the HDMI input that the cable actually uses and make sure the connected device is on and awake. Then reseat the cable, test another port or cable, and temporarily bypass any receiver or adapter. A “No Signal” message alone does not prove the TV is broken.
Start by checking the TV’s own screen
Press Home or open the TV’s menu. If the home screen appears, the panel and basic TV interface are working; focus first on the selected HDMI input and the connected signal path. TCL recommends this check on its Roku TVs. If the TV’s own interface does not appear, do not assume the HDMI cable is the cause; continue with the TV-side checks below. TCL’s no-signal guidance
Check the input, source device, and cable
- Select the matching HDMI input. Use the TV’s source or input menu and choose the port where the cable is physically connected, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. Each port corresponds to a separate input. Menu wording varies by model. LG’s no-signal guidance
- Make sure the source is on and awake. Check the cable box, game console, streamer, computer, or receiver. Wake it if it is asleep; if needed, restart it. LG’s set-top-box guidance includes unplugging its power and reconnecting it. LG’s no-signal guidance
- Reseat and inspect the HDMI cable. Disconnect it at both ends, then reconnect it firmly. Check for visibly bent or damaged connectors. If available, test another HDMI port and another cable, changing one thing at a time so you can tell which change affects the result. TCL’s no-signal guidance and TCL’s HDMI connection guidance
Isolate receivers, switches, and adapters
Every intermediary adds another connection to check. If possible, connect the source directly to the TV temporarily. If a receiver is part of the setup, confirm that it is powered on, set to the input receiving the source, and connected from its monitor output to the TV. If the direct connection works but the receiver path does not, investigate the receiver’s selected input, output connection, and associated cables. TCL’s HDMI connection guidance
Check HDMI mode only if simpler checks do not work
Some TV models provide HDMI mode or format options, but names and supported settings differ. TCL’s guide for the Fire TV products it covers specifies HDMI Mode 2.0 for UHD-or-better content and 1.4 for HD-or-lower content. This is model-specific guidance, not a universal setting. Try a restart or HDMI handshake reset
After checking the input, source, and cable, restart the source device and TV. Philips gives a more detailed reset sequence for the models covered by its UK support article:
- Switch off the TV and disconnect its accessories and connected devices.
- Wait at least one minute after the TV’s LED goes off, then reconnect the TV’s power and start it without the removed devices.
- Power-cycle the source device and allow it to finish starting up.
- Connect the HDMI cable to the TV first, then to the source device.
Follow your TV’s model-specific manual if its instructions differ; restart steps and menu labels are not identical across products. Philips UK’s HDMI troubleshooting steps

Use the results to identify the failing part of the chain
Test one variable at a time and note which combinations work. A device that works on another TV shifts attention toward the original TV’s input or settings, or the connection path, but does not by itself prove a specific component has failed.

- Another cable works: the original cable or its connector may be faulty.
- The source works directly but not through a receiver: check the receiver’s input, monitor output, and connections.
- The TV’s home screen works but the source does not: continue checking the selected input, source, cable, port, and any intermediary.

Know when to contact TV support
If the TV remains on but shows neither its home screen nor a picture after external devices have been disconnected and a power cycle has been tried, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair professional. TCL recommends support if its isolation and power-cycle checks do not restore the home screen; LG distinguishes a no-signal message from a powered TV with no message or picture, which may need professional diagnosis.
