HDMI 2.2 was released on June 25, 2025. It raises the specification’s maximum bandwidth to 96Gbps and defines modes up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz. Those are capability limits, not a guarantee that any HDMI 2.2 device—or an ordinary 16K setup—can deliver them. The source, display, signal format and cable all matter.
What HDMI 2.2 adds
The HDMI Forum first announced HDMI Version 2.2 as upcoming on January 6, 2025, then announced its release on June 25, 2025. The released specification uses next-generation Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology and supports bandwidth up to 96Gbps. The January announcement and the release notice establish the announcement and release dates.
HDMI 2.2 also includes Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), intended to improve audio/video synchronization. It is particularly relevant in multi-hop systems where a signal passes through an AV receiver or soundbar. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s feature overview also lists Dynamic HDR, Source-Based Tone Mapping, eARC, VRR, ALLM, QFT, QMS and HDMI Cable Power. Their appearance in the overview does not mean all are new to HDMI 2.2.

What the 16K and high-refresh claims mean
The release describes support for up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz. The headline should not be read as “16K uncompressed”: the cited material does not establish that claim. The specification’s high-mode examples distinguish formats using compression and chroma subsampling from uncompressed full-chroma examples.

These are specification-defined capabilities, not proof that a particular source, display or cable can support each combination. See the feature overview and HDMI Forum release for the mode descriptions.
Do you need a new HDMI cable?
Not unless the bandwidth required by your equipment and chosen mode exceeds what your existing cable configuration supports. HDMI LA says Ultra High Speed HDMI cables apply to configurations up to 48Gbps. For HDMI 2.2 products displaying the Ultra96 feature name, the required cable for the product’s maximum bandwidth is an Ultra96 HDMI cable, which supports up to 96Gbps and HDMI 2.2 applications. Ultra96 guidance describes product bandwidth tiers of 64Gbps, 80Gbps or 96Gbps.

For buyers, the important check is the actual cable’s certification label—not just a listing title or a claim that a cable is “HDMI 2.2.” The HDMI Cable Certification Program requires each cable model length to be tested and certified, with its Certification Label displayed. Match the labeled cable to the bandwidth your source and display need; there is no general requirement to replace a cable that already supports your setup.
What a complete HDMI 2.2 setup requires
HDMI 2.2 is backward compatible with earlier HDMI specification versions, but older equipment does not gain the newer specification’s maximum modes just by connecting it to an HDMI 2.2 cable. For any target resolution and refresh rate, check the supported bandwidth and modes of both the source and display, the signal format—including whether compression or chroma subsampling is involved—and the cable’s certification and tested length. In a multi-hop system, also check whether LIP is supported where synchronization is a concern. HDMI LA’s overview and Ultra96 guidance cover specification-level features, not the capabilities of individual retail models.

Who may benefit from the extra bandwidth?
The higher bandwidth is intended to support demanding applications, including AR/VR/MR, spatial reality, light-field displays, digital signage, medical imaging and machine vision. These are potential application areas identified by the HDMI Forum, not evidence that 16K displays or content are widely available to consumers. The cited official materials define capabilities but do not establish household adoption, display shipments or current 16K content availability.
