You do not need an HDMI 2.2 cable unless your source, display, and every device between them support an HDMI 2.2 video mode that needs more bandwidth than current Ultra High Speed cables provide. For most current setups, a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the relevant choice. An Ultra96 cable matters only when the whole chain can use the faster modes.
What HDMI 2.2 changed
The HDMI Forum released HDMI Specification Version 2.2 on June 25, 2025. The specification raises the maximum bandwidth to 96 Gbps using a next-generation Fixed Rate Link technology. Its headline capabilities, as listed in the Forum’s 2025 release, include:
- Uncompressed 8K at 60 Hz.
- 4K at 240 Hz with full 4:4:4 chroma sampling at 10-bit or 12-bit color.
- Resolutions up to 12K at 120 Hz and 16K at 60 Hz.
These are specification ceilings, not guarantees for a particular product. A source and a display must both support the exact mode you want, and any receiver or soundbar in the path must pass it through. A television that carries an HDMI 2.1 label may still lack some HDMI 2.2 modes, and the public evidence available for this article does not establish which current TVs, monitors, or graphics cards implement them.

Why bandwidth is not picture quality
Bandwidth is the amount of data a link can carry each second. The signal’s demand is set by resolution, refresh rate, chroma sampling, and color bit depth. HDMI LA notes that combining high resolution, a fast refresh rate, HDR, and full 4:4:4 chroma raises bandwidth demand. When a link falls short, a system may lower the refresh rate or reduce color detail rather than fail outright.

Color depth is a common hidden cost. HDMI LA’s 2026 guidance states that 10-bit color carries approximately 25% more data per pixel than 8-bit color. A faster cable therefore helps only when the mode you select is actually demanding more data than your current link can carry.
What Ultra96 means
Ultra96 is the HDMI 2.2 cable designation for cables that support up to 96 Gbps and all HDMI 2.2 applications. Ultra96 cables are backward usable with existing HDMI devices, but an older device keeps its own limits. A cable cannot add bandwidth that the source, display, or intermediate device does not support.
The Ultra96 device label is not a single speed
Do not treat an Ultra96 feature name on a TV, receiver, or source as a guarantee of a 96 Gbps port. HDMI LA states that the designation can indicate a maximum of 64, 80, or 96 Gbps. The product’s technical specifications show which tier applies, so check them before assuming a device can use the full 96 Gbps link.

Which cable fits a current setup
HDMI LA’s guidance for Ultra High Speed HDMI cables covers system configurations up to 48 Gbps, including 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz. If every device in your chain needs no more than that, a certified Ultra High Speed cable is the directly relevant option. Buying an Ultra96 cable will not unlock HDMI 2.2 features that your devices cannot run.
| Cable designation | Bandwidth ceiling | Configurations it covers | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultra High Speed HDMI | Up to 48 Gbps (HDMI LA) | Systems up to 48 Gbps, including 8K at 60 Hz and 4K at 120 Hz | Your devices top out at 48 Gbps or below, and you need no HDMI 2.2-only mode |
| Ultra96 | Up to 96 Gbps (HDMI Forum) | All HDMI 2.2 applications | Your full chain supports an HDMI 2.2 mode that needs more than 48 Gbps |
Compare the setup on these points before buying:
- The maximum bandwidth each device supports, and the lowest value along the complete connection path.
- The resolution and refresh rate you actually plan to use.
- The chroma format and color bit depth, especially for HDR or PC use.
- The certification of the exact cable model and length.
- For Ultra96 devices, whether the product is listed at 64, 80, or 96 Gbps.
Generic wording on a product listing, such as “HDMI 2.1” or “HDMI 2.2,” tells you little about the cable’s tested bandwidth. Look for the specific designation and certification.
How to check whether a cable is certified
The HDMI Forum requires that each Ultra96 cable model and length be tested and certified, and that it display a Certification Label. To check a cable:

- Find the Certification Label on the cable or its packaging.
- Confirm the designation printed or listed matches the bandwidth you need: Ultra High Speed for up to 48 Gbps, or Ultra96 for HDMI 2.2 applications.
- Scan the label, as HDMI LA describes, to verify the cable.
- Match the model and length to the entry you scanned. Certification applies to a tested model and length, not to a brand name alone.
As an example, in September 2026 the manufacturer Wieson announced that its 2-meter cable model AB9856-40113020-00 had completed certification at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center. That is Wieson’s own statement about its product, not an independent test, so verify the label on the cable you receive.

HDMI 2.2 also introduces Latency Indication Protocol (LIP). It is intended to help audio and video stay in sync, especially in multi-hop setups that route through an AV receiver or soundbar. LIP is a system feature, not a cable-speed feature, so it is not a reason on its own to replace a cable that already works for your devices.

What the evidence does not establish
The available sources define the specification and the certification rules, but they do not provide a complete count of HDMI 2.2-capable televisions, monitors, sources, or receivers by region as of October 8, 2026. No independent consumer survey or market-wide adoption figure was established. A certified cable does not show that HDMI 2.2 hardware is widespread, and device availability and cable listings can change quickly, so check current product specifications before buying.
Who can skip the upgrade
- Readers whose source and display support 4K at 120 Hz or below, or 8K at 60 Hz, and who need no HDMI 2.2-only mode: a certified Ultra High Speed cable covers the need.
- Readers with an older TV, monitor, graphics card, console, receiver, or soundbar: a new cable does not upgrade that hardware’s bandwidth or features.
- Readers who want only lower latency or better audio sync: LIP depends on the devices in the chain, not on the cable alone.
Buy an Ultra96 cable when your devices can run an HDMI 2.2 mode that needs more than 48 Gbps and you have confirmed the full chain supports it.
