If your iPhone is still on an older release, there are good reasons to update—but in October 2026, iOS 18.4 is not the version to aim for. Apple has since listed later iOS 18 releases and iOS 26 releases. Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest version Apple offers for your specific iPhone. The 15 reasons below explain what iOS 18.4 introduced and why staying current matters; availability varies by device, region, and subscription.
What iOS 18.4 added
Apple’s iOS 18.4 release notes describe new emoji, Image Playground and Apple News+ additions, Photos improvements, and other system changes. Several of the 15 reasons below describe the same feature from different reader perspectives; they are not 15 separate major features.
1. Eight new emoji
iOS 18.4 added eight emoji, a small change that can appear in everyday messages. Apple gives the count in its iOS 18 update history.

2. Sketch in Image Playground
Image Playground gained a Sketch style for creating images. This feature depends on Apple Intelligence availability; installing iOS 18.4 alone does not make it available on every compatible iPhone.

3. Recipes in Apple News+
Apple added recipes from publishers to the Apple News+ experience. This is most relevant to News+ subscribers, and availability may vary by region.
4–5. More ways to organize and filter Photos
Apple says iOS 18.4 enhanced Photos library organization and filtering. These changes can help you sort or narrow a large library without changing the underlying purpose of the app.

6. Priority Notifications on supported iPhones
Priority Notifications can surface notifications judged important near the top. Apple names all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max as compatible models for this feature; it is not a general benefit of every iPhone that can run iOS 18.4.

iOS 18.4 adds access to curated ambient listening options from Control Center, making the feature quicker to reach than opening a separate app.

8. Visual Intelligence improvements
Apple lists Visual Intelligence improvements among the release changes. Access depends on a supported device, so this is not a universal iOS 18.4 feature.
9. Bug fixes
Apple’s release notes say the update includes bug fixes. The notes do not establish a particular improvement for every device or app, so treat this as a general maintenance benefit rather than a guaranteed fix for a specific problem.

10. Security updates
iOS 18.4 also included security updates. Those matter even if you do not use the new features, because system updates can address vulnerabilities as well as add visible changes.

11. Later releases added fixes after 18.4
Installing 18.4 would not include fixes published in later releases. Apple’s maintained security releases list includes later iOS 18 versions as well as iOS 26 releases, so the right target is the newest version offered for your iPhone—not 18.4 specifically.

12. The 18.4.1 advisory is a reminder to install security updates
Apple’s iOS 18.4.1 security advisory describes two security issues and says Apple was aware of reports that each may have been exploited in highly sophisticated attacks against specific targeted individuals. That supports taking updates seriously; it does not mean every iPhone owner was exposed to the same attack.
13. Apple Intelligence additions matter if your device supports them
For owners of supported devices, iOS 18.4’s Apple Intelligence-related changes add capabilities beyond the general system updates. Eligibility is device-dependent, and Apple names the iPhone 16 lineup and iPhone 15 Pro models for Priority Notifications specifically. Do not assume every phone that installs iOS 18.4 receives every Apple Intelligence feature.
14. Image Playground users get another creative option
Sketch gives people who already use Image Playground another style to try. It is a practical reason to update only if your device supports Apple Intelligence and you use the image-generation feature.
15. A newer software baseline is more useful than stopping at 18.4
Moving beyond 18.4 can bring subsequent fixes, but the available path depends on the iPhone. Apple’s iOS 18.7.7 security advisory names devices from iPhone XR and XS through iPhone 16 models, plus iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generations), and says the release was expanded to more devices to provide protections against web attacks called DarkSword. Which release appears for you depends on your model and Apple’s current release path.

- Check the version Apple offers: open Settings > General > Software Update. Read the version shown for your iPhone rather than assuming every model is offered the same major release.
- Install the newest offered version: follow the on-screen prompts. If Apple offers a later security update on your model instead of the newest major iOS version, use the version Software Update presents for that device.
- Check the release notes for your model: Apple’s update history and security release list distinguish features and fixes by release. Feature availability can depend on hardware, region, or a News+ subscription.
The feature list is a reason to understand what 18.4 changed, not a recommendation to stop there. For a phone that is still on an older version, use Software Update to identify the current supported option for that model.
