Square Enix removed the 14-day play-time limit from the FINAL FANTASY XI free trial on September 30, 2026, and raised its character level cap from 50 to 75. Players can also return to previously created trial accounts, including accounts whose trial period had expired. The trial is more open-ended now, but it still has content and feature limits.
What changed in the FINAL FANTASY XI free trial?
Square Enix announced the changes on September 30, 2026. The trial no longer ends after 14 days, and its level cap is now 75 rather than 50. The company says players with existing trial accounts can use them again, even if their trial time had run out. Square Enix’s announcement says the higher cap opens access to additional content released for characters up to level 75.
| Trial feature | Before the change | As of September 30, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Play-time limit | 14 days | No play-time limit |
| Character level cap | 50 | 75 |
| Previously expired trial accounts | Trial time had ended | Can be used again, according to Square Enix |
“No play-time limit” means you can keep playing the trial without a 14-day countdown. It does not mean the trial includes every part of the game or removes all account restrictions.

GamesRadar reports that the trial includes the base game, not expansion content, and that it limits some social and economy features. Its account describes restrictions involving auction-house access, trading, gil holdings, and starting parties; trial players can join parties created by players with full-game accounts. GamesRadar’s report is a secondary summary, so check Square Enix’s current trial terms for the exact rules before signing up.

- New jobs including the highly requested Blue Mage and Corsair expand battle strategies
- Learn about key NPCs, new monsters, and new areas in Vana'diel's Near East
- Use a new type of battle called Assault
- Included content: the base game, according to GamesRadar; expansion content is not included.
- Social and economy features: the report identifies limits on auction-house use, trading, gil holdings, and starting parties.
- Party play: trial players can join parties started by full-game players, as reported by GamesRadar.
These restrictions concern what trial accounts can access or do, not how many days you can play. Square Enix’s announcement invites players to download the free trial.
Why does the headline say “the critically acclaimed MMORPG”?
The phrase is a nod to a well-known FINAL FANTASY XIV free-trial advertising copypasta that became a meme. Know Your Meme dates the meme to 2021 and documents its reuse in posts promoting or asking about the FFXIV trial. Know Your Meme’s entry explains that history.

This news is about FINAL FANTASY XI, not a change to FINAL FANTASY XIV. The shared phrasing is the joke; the two games’ trial terms and gameplay should not be assumed to match. PC Gamer also framed the FFXI announcement as a new twist on the FFXIV phrase. PC Gamer’s coverage makes that connection explicit.

What the level 75 cap means for a new player
The change gives trial players more room to progress than the old level 50 ceiling, and Square Enix says it enables access to additional content designed for characters up to level 75. It does not remove the trial’s other boundaries: the reported base-game-only scope and social or economy limits still matter when deciding whether the trial provides the experience you want.
